m4tthumphrey··on Self-hostable webhook tester in go
Honestly no… testing them needn’t be a complex process!

There is another service that allows for scripting which I’m sure some people love, but I just need somewhere I can set the response.

m4tthumphrey··on Self-hostable webhook tester in go
So I’ve been looking at these sorts of tools recently as am building webhooks into my project. One common theme is that none of them allow you to change/add the response headers; only the body.

Otherwise it looks good! If you add the above I will have a reason to stop looking!

100%, it is just a buzzword right now with so many companies trying to get in on the "action" without actually providing anything useful.

"AI" is just a buzzword most of the time. So many companies have literally just added it to their product name, or in to some description of the product. In all likelihood, nothing has really changed other than maybe a thin OpenAI API wrapper doing something nobody asked for.

Also, "AI" in it's majority current form, has been around for decades it's just cool now to use the word "AI" when branding a product/company.

m4tthumphrey··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
At least theres a valid reason for a TV to be connected though.
m4tthumphrey··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
I purposely spend a lot of time ensuring that an appliance (such as dishwasher, fridge, oven etc) has no connectivity before I purchase. Even if it misses out on some of the “better features”.

Surely when all appliances go down this route it will not last long, purely down to the amount of breaches that will inevitably occur. Not to mention the backlash.

m4tthumphrey··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
Good post. I chose to only implement magic links in a previous project and had an issue with users complaining that the (one-time) link would always be expired when they clicked. I could not reproduce it and just left it. Then this thread appeared and I instantly knew the problem: email client previews. Lesson learnt.
m4tthumphrey··on Nokia 5110 – Back from the Dead
The 5110 was also my first phone and still probably my favourite ever. I racked up a £300 bill on month 1 and had to essentially do my paper round for free to pay it off. Good times!
m4tthumphrey··on The rise of digital housekeeping: the hidden work of smart technology
We just finished a home renovation and the only "smart" thing I did was ensure every room had ethernet connected to a 16 port switch. I did however get Hive (remote thermostat) installed when we moved in 8 years ago.

These houses with smart locks etc scare me.

m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
This is a very good thread, I’ve already saved a few items on Amazon, a rice cooker being one!

Under £100

- Electric toothbrush - this isn’t new, I’ve used one for 15 years or so but I couldn’t even imagine not using one

- A decent water bottle

- Creatine supplements

I’m sure there’s more but can’t think right now.

Under £1000 - Garmin Fenix watch, I’m sure this would apply to any watch that tracks calories, steps, sleep etc but having one with all this info on my wrist is something I could never go without.

m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
Hey, I have just started to develop this problem and have been putting off going to the clinic. Can you link to the one you have please?
m4tthumphrey··on Hacking 700M Electronic Arts accounts
Me neither, but would it have been easy to trace him? I mean if he was going to use this for bad, I would assume he would have waited a month or so then done it all via a VPN etc. But point being he _could_ have done this and to be honest for all we know, someone else _has_ been abusing it until it was patched...
m4tthumphrey··on Hacking 700M Electronic Arts Accounts
I thought about this... What would be the outcome here do you think? Ie if this guy didn't report and did decide to mess around for real? Could he have been tracked? Would EA be down for weeks?!
m4tthumphrey··on I Quit Teaching Because of ChatGPT
Does calculating numbers based on concrete rules require "thinking" in the same way OP talks about? I think not.
m4tthumphrey··on Blood puddles, mold, tainted meat, bugs: Boar's Head inspections are horrifying
Man, I love being a vegetarian.
m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
This is a very cool idea! I don’t work in a team big enough for this anymore but I would have loved this in previous roles!
m4tthumphrey··on Notris: A Tetris clone for the PlayStation 1
The button mashing is the best part! So many interesting techniques to get faster !
m4tthumphrey··on Notris: A Tetris clone for the PlayStation 1
Great write up and very interesting!

Slightly off-topic but I literally just bought a PS2 purely to play the original Track and Field games. So much nostalgia! I really wish they would redo these games for the modern consoles!

m4tthumphrey··on Peloton to charge $95 activation fee for used bikes
You can use the bike as is - ie without a sub. The sub is for the classes.
m4tthumphrey··on Peloton to charge $95 activation fee for used bikes
Does variable pricing happen outside of B2B?
m4tthumphrey··on Peloton to charge $95 activation fee for used bikes
Well, you’re not wrong in theory about the wall and floor, but if everyone did what you’re suggesting, public gyms would not exist.

The Peloton subscription does not just include cycling programs - there are many other exercise disciplines. The bike is expensive yes, but is a solid piece of kit and works great with the software (obviously I guess).

I don’t use our sub much these days but my partner still very much loves it. She uses it for the bike itself as well as yoga, stretches and some others.

The instructors are frankly incredible, there are so many of them and all provide different experiences. They are what you’re ultimately paying for.

Exercise is just as important for health is food is, it’s not all about losing weight.

m4tthumphrey··on Twilio confirms data breach after hackers leak 33M Authy user phone numbers
I only answer the phone now if I know the caller or if I’m expecting a call, and even then I would usually let it go to voicemail and call them back.
m4tthumphrey··on Please maintain eye contact for the duration of the ad
This featured in one of the early episodes of Black Mirror and is still in the top 3 for how regularly I think about it happening in real life.
m4tthumphrey··on Telegram Combolists and 361M Email Addresses
Yeh I figured it was a choice, but thought maybe Troy could make it so we could only see the data that relates to us, maybe by sending a verification email, similar to how he verifies domain searches.
m4tthumphrey··on Telegram Combolists and 361M Email Addresses
Same... I'm not sure if this is possible via HIBP but I feel like we should be able to look at the data ourselves, at least at the parts that pertain to us?
m4tthumphrey··on Eloquent JavaScript 4th edition (2024)
Thank you for mentioning YDKJS. I hadn’t heard of it before and am in the beginning of my first proper JS project for about 10 years; man has the JS world changed. I have already skimmed the first few chapters and am already understanding it all very concisely. I will be reading this properly via GitHub for sure.
