m4r35n357··on Who Killed the Scrollbar?
Idiots removed the triangles at top & bottom that you could use to scroll without dragging. I think they did it because they are stupid and evil.
m4r35n357··on Guix Reduces Bootstrap Seed by Half
Fascinating stuff!
m4r35n357··on Working all night is not 'a badge of pride'
Why is this not obvious to everybody?

At least they aren't copper nanotubes ;)

OK I'll get my coat.

m4r35n357··on Plane Tests Must Use Average Pilots, NTSB Says After 737 Max Crashes
Good idea - any shit pilots want to volunteer? ;)
m4r35n357··on Trolls Are Swarming Young Climate Activists Online
We all are.
m4r35n357··on Ask HN: How do you handle/maintain local Python environments?
The bigger the venv gets, the more likely you are to get version clashes - unless all your projects can use the same version of each dependency. Even then, it will tend to grow without bound.
m4r35n357··on Ask HN: How do you handle/maintain local Python environments?
Easy - virtualenvwrapper!

All the talk about anaconda etc is for mad data scientists, not us normal folk ;)

m4r35n357··on OLPC’s $100 laptop was going to change the world (2018)
Real reason is buried in the text:

"While Sugar was an elegant operating system, some potential buyers were dubious of anything that wasn’t Microsoft Windows. They wanted students to learn an interface they’d be using for the rest of their lives, not just with the XO-1."

They bottled out of Linux, so no free OS . . . the rest is history.

m4r35n357··on A Lunar Space Elevator Is Feasible and Inexpensive, Scientists Find
Glanced through the paper quickly, couldn't find _any_ references to elasticity or strain, just the breaking stress. I would have thought that would be in the calculations somewhere, considering this thing would be a quarter of a million miles long! Maybe I'm just being a killjoy . . .
m4r35n357··on Database leaks data on most of Ecuador's citizens, including 6.7m children
Think of the citizens!
m4r35n357··on If you have something important to say, don't say it in a paywalled publication
Fake news is never paywalled.
m4r35n357··on Drawbacks of Python
Python is the simplest language I know of that does operator oveloading. If I had to write my pet maths project in c++ I would not even have got started. Sometimes abstract "drawbacks" are irrelevant!
m4r35n357··on Test coverage only matters if it's at 100%
Mutation testing can expose weaknesses like these in your automated tests.
m4r35n357··on Test coverage only matters if it's at 100%
Not only that, you should subject your automated tests to mutation testing. No link coz wikipedia seems to be down for me.
m4r35n357··on Study Finds No Single Genetic Cause of Same-Sex Sexual Behavior

m4r35n357··on Run Commands, the 'rc' in '.bashrc'
Hmm, I thought it was "run control" . . . ;)
m4r35n357··on [dead]
"In the command line" is a horribly wishy-washy windows-ism ("short" for command line interpreter/interface).

Linux/Mac has a _shell_ working within a _terminal_.

A "command line" is actually input passed to a program by the OS.

Discuss ;)

m4r35n357··on [dead]
Yawn.

(sob) he tricked us, that's why we didn't believe it was happening.

m4r35n357··on Common Lisp: Numbers
For MP work in Python, gmpy2 - https://pypi.org/project/gmpy2/ comes with a much better selection of MP functions, backed by MPFR, MPC.

Also, the buit-in Decimal class is horribly slow by comparison to gmpy2.

m4r35n357··on On Dat
Why do we need node?
m4r35n357··on With greater longevity, the quest to avoid infirmities of aging is more urgent
I don't think many commenters got what I was trying to say. I'll have another go. Assuming you haven't done all the things you want to do in (say) 70 years, why would you say you need or deserve more time?
