lzell··on Tim O'Reilly: I am really starting to hate Mac OS X.
Spectacle is an awesome open source util for this too: http://spectacle.divisiblebyzero.com
lzell··on The Food Bubble (2010)
Covered in the article. Begin at "While Japan had relied on..."
lzell··on TakeThisLollipop - really clever/creepy use of the Facebook API
Google street view would have been a nice addition too, depending on the accuracy of the geo lookup.
lzell··on Joypad Turns Your iPhone Into A Remote Control
Hey, thanks for submitting this. I subscribed to the Wanderplayer mailing list a couple weeks back and have been meaning to ask you something: do you really live in the apartments at 220 E 24th? I only ask because that is where I used to live when Todd and I started working on Joypad. Apparently there is something in the air there that makes people think "iphone game controller" :)
lzell··on Safari extension to hide Bitcoin stories on HN
What about the band that broke the bitcoin story!?
lzell··on `gosh` is security theater for piped shell scripts
This could be a direct response to the concerns you voiced in the Pow thread a couple days back. And your input is on word choice? Jeesh, someone's hard to please :)
lzell··on Host Your Static Website on Amazon S3
How about a service with js commenting that alerts a trusted server of the comment? Server grabs the static html, appends the comment, pushes the new html to s3, bada-bing-bada-boom.
lzell··on Show HN: Joypad turns your iPhone into a game controller
This product is almost a year old now. I never submitted it here because I felt weird asking for feedback on a product that you had to buy. Now there's a free version, so give it a shot. I would love to hear feedback and suggestions. Sales have not been stellar, but the conversion rate is good. This site has seen a grand total of 36,000 unique visitors, and I've sold over 5k copies of the paid version. To me that means I need to get it in front of a lot more people. Marketing is not my forte, so lay any ideas you have on me!
lzell··on Who is Mark Bao? Meet the 18-year old entrepreneur behind Threewords.me
Mark, congratulations on the sale and good luck with your future businesses. In the video linked above, you say that you don't know for sure what caused threewords.me to go big after a few days of little activity. Do you have any theories?
lzell··on Git Immersion
The ultimate log format (lab 10, item 4) is superb!
lzell··on Pizza And Ramen Are Hurting Your Startup
> mussels, beef stroganoff, garlic whipped potatoes, green beans, steamed broccoli and a pineapple and blueberry salad

Hm, that sure beats the spinach and cottage cheese I just mixed together and called a "salad". But hey, dinner took 40 seconds. Now a quick check of HN, and back to work I go...

lzell··on Ask HN: How would you find an apt for six in nyc for a week?
:) right I forgot to mention they specifically asked for an apartment. I imagine because 1 week in a Manhattan hotel for 6 would cost a fortune. Not that an apartment will be cheap...
lzell··on TI releases Launchpad, a $4.30 (shipping included) microproccessor dev kit
That's part of what makes it exciting! I was a hardware engineer before switching to software. At that time, we used to say to the software guys "if you guys screw up your design, you recompile; if we screw up, we have to update the schematic, update the cad drawings, order new pcb boards, wait a few weeks, and hope it works next time". The pressure made it fun. Not to mention playing with oscilloscopes and function generators. If it was a minor glitch you could get by by chopping some pins or doing some soldering. Man, that was a good first job out of college. Oh and I'm definitely ordering one of these, even though I haven't used Windows in a few years either. I've got a box with xp somewhere...
lzell··on Ask HN: Where do you look to find large consulting jobs?
Many thanks to everyone for such great responses.
lzell··on Today the Dow dropped 1000 points in about ten minutes.
A little off topic, but say I want to experiment with algorithm trading, what kind of APIs are available for trading? I assume they are pretty expensive for access, correct?
lzell··on "Authentic" is dead
Is it? My marketing copy doesn't agree. And that has worked out pretty well.
lzell··on 23andme for only $99 today only
Sounds like a business idea, send out 'surveys' and analyze the envelope when it's returned. Sell the data to insurance co. Who wants in?
lzell··on Browsarity (YC W10) Allows You To Donate Affiliate Fees To Charity
Well you can color me skeptical. This is the way I see something like this coming into being:

1. Someone thinks of the clever idea of overwriting non-affiliate urls with an affiliate url of their account. 2. In realizing that no one would ever install this, they think "how can I convince people to add this to their browser and take a cut of the profit?" 3. Charity!

I hope I am way wrong.

And man, the news in here is really becoming a TechCrunch aggregator.

lzell··on Browsarity (YC W10) Allows You To Donate Affiliate Fees To Charity
Allows you to donate affiliate fees to charity?! Bullshit. Should read: Forces businesses to donate part of their profit margin to charity and browsarity.
lzell··on Get any a-Z char using only []()+{}/. in JavaScript (for XSS obfuscation)
I'm missing the basics for this one. Why does ++[[]][+[]] == 1?
lzell··on Photographer Loves Math, Graphs Her Images
:) oops.
lzell··on Photographer Loves Math, Graphs Her Images
Cool. Is there software that can create a Fourier series that matches the contour exactly, e.g. the contour of the mountain tops in the third pic?
lzell··on Ok Go on Why Labels Won't Let You Embed YouTube Videos
Whenever I see a summary in HN comments it is usually because the post itself is long and rambling. I'm glad I was not deterred from clicking through, it's a great read.
lzell··on 32mil passwords compromised, SQL injection attack on RockYou
.5% of the world's population, stored in plain text. Bravo.
lzell··on What are your Ruby Regex Idioms?
Nice. I am intrigued by the leading underscore, are you just using that as a throwaway variable? You could get the username and domain on their own with:

  username, domain = [*/([^@]+)@(.+$)/.match("foo@example.com")][1..-1]
And it is super readable.
lzell··on Why to use a static site generator instead of Wordpress
I would be interested to see a follow up post after the honeymoon phase ends. I switched from WP to webby, loved it at first, but will be reverting soon. Static is faster, but php is fast enough for most blogs, and WP is full featured.
lzell··on Tell HN: Dealing with VCs, my experience
It is a bit straining. If you're on mac cmd+opt+ctrl+8 helps a little.
lzell··on Sinatra - Hyper Fast Mini Webapp Development in Ruby
Oh I wrote that backwards by accident. But I'm sure you are right. That shouldn't be the browser's responsibility (although it is nice that FF does it for you). I thought it was a dead link.
lzell··on Sinatra - Hyper Fast Mini Webapp Development in Ruby
Weird, I get redirected to http://www.sinatrarb.com on safari but not FF. Why would that be?
