lypextin··on The Low Energy Trap
So we should just let the stars waste the enormous amounts of energy every single second while providing near-zero value to anything concious, when we could instead harvest it? For as long as humankind has existed, we wanted more and we strived to get it. That's not greed, that's a struggle towards better tomorrows. Energy in abundance has a tremendous potential and not just for more wanting and more consumption. Consumption goes hand in hand with creation and of course we will always want more. You speak like it's a bad thing that people have desires at all. I think 'more' is definitely an answer here, you're just thinking too small.
lypextin··on The Logic of Envy
It's supposed to shift focus from your identity to your actions. "I code for a living" / "I code often" or even "I like coding" are very different phrases than accepting the programmer identity/label. It's not about what you are, but what you actually do. Focusing on your actions instead of yourself is a lot less narcissistic.

Relevant for those who don't want to get rid of infinite scroll sites completely:

When opening such site, go several pages down immediately and work your way up instead of down. That way, you have a clear end and you've decided already how much time you want to spend there and can just quit when you get to the first post.

lypextin··on Why Toys?
That you're taking the analogy too literally? Ice skating does sound more fun.

I was always curious about trying this, but has always been put off by the Emacs part of it. How much Emacs do you need to know to use this comfortably?
lypextin··on MindWeb – A Computer Science Bachelor Curriculum
This seems like an amazing concept and I have been thinking of it ever since I saw KhanAcademy knowledge tree.

I can see this being combined with Arbital's Lens (Same thing explained in multiple ways - from a simple explanation for a 10-year-old to a rigorous explanation for a mathematician)

I always considered this the best way to actually progress in my learning and I still see it as the next big thing after Wikipedia, once it's done correctly.

lypextin··on Disconnect. Offline only
Most of the time, yes. But if you wanted a break from PC instead of internet, I can recommend workrave, it's built exactly for this purpose.

Cron job mostly serves to remind me to use internet as a tool, not as something that is constantly on. Building this awareness of how I am using it is immensely helpful.

lypextin··on Disconnect. Offline only
to me, using cron to disconnect my internet every half an hour just to remind me to break the loop has been immensely helpful. And annoying. But mostly helpful.

My brain switched to offline mode has about three times better focus.

Similarly to this, I'm using my browser in full-screen mode most of the time to eliminate distractions. It was very surprising to me, how big an effect it has, to not see the tabs.
