lyonlim··on Food as medicine
Yeah, you can get B12 from eggs, milk without consuming meat/fish.. it's not vegan though.
lyonlim··on A Woman’s Job Interview Was Cancelled Because She Asked a Simple Question
Why bother interviewing the candidate if expectations on salary can't be met on both sides? I always ask candidates their salary expectations before spending more time on the interview process.

Employees need to feel they are remunerated fairly. Similarly, companies need to derive expected value with the wages paid.

lyonlim··on Amazon Deforestation, Once Tamed, Comes Roaring Back
This is sad. Anything that we can do?

There's this site, tree-nation.com that helps with reforestation projects. Any others out there?

lyonlim··on SpiderOakONE – Zero Knowledge Cloud Storage
I really want to use this, but the mobile app (Android) really lacks very basic functionality - uploading files.

I recently stopped renewing my Dropbox on an annual license and will switch once I find a good alternative..

lyonlim··on IPv6 Support for EC2 Instances in Virtual Private Clouds
I believe this doesn't mean there's IPv6 support for ELBs in a VPC yet. We unknowingly enabled dualstack configuration on Route 53 some time back and this led to users on devices which prioritised IPv6 over IPv4 to fail to connect.
lyonlim··on How the Singapore Circle Line rogue train was caught with data
Super cool to see how the team isolated the cause. I travel along the same route as well and this train caused half the circle line to be shut down during one morning.

For the next few days after, they shut down the telco signals in the train tunnels to determine if it caused the signal interference.

lyonlim··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
I created the original Add-ons for Miranda IM. Good to see you around here! Kinda still amazed that the project is still going.
lyonlim··on AWS IPv6 Support Update – CloudFront, WAF, S3 Transfer Acceleration
It's in beta now so hopefully soon.
lyonlim··on USB-IF Publishes Audio Over USB Type-C Specifications
Will this support existing devices with USB type-c?
lyonlim··on Dropbox Is in Talks with Advisers for Possible 2017 IPO
Many many years back, I used Sugarsync but ditched them a few months later for Dropbox when they screwed up my file sync.

Recently, I switched from annual to monthly subscription for Dropbox because I wanted to push myself to migrate my files off their service..mainly due to concerns about privacy..

I use Google Drive at work.. it's not great, but it works better than OneDrive. Wanted to use OneDrive as it came with my Office365 subscription..but their Mac and Android clients really need improving.

Almost moved to SpiderOak..but stopped due to their poorly designed Android app.

I can't seem to get myself off Dropbox. I don't use external hard disks for backup now. I digitize everything, so it's important to find a service I can trust...both on privacy and on sync reliability..

The sad truth is Dropbox clients across different platforms and their sync stability is unmatched in this space.

lyonlim··on Two tools for quick and easy web application load testing during development
We use loader.io, but am looking for ways to load test websockets which loader.io doesn't support
lyonlim··on Ask HN: Location-independent entrepreneurs, where do you live and why?
Rent has been dropping here, compared to a couple years back. Food can be really cheap if you dine at food centres rather then cafes and restaurants.
lyonlim··on Building a browser-based test automation server on the Google Cloud Platform
Hi, loadfocus looks very good. We currently use loader.io and browserstack.

Quick question: does your load testing support websockets?

lyonlim··on Israel Proves the Desalination Era Is Here
I wanted to understand how Singapore's desalination capacity (which is known as our fourth tap for water sources), compares with this. The numbers are quite mind blowing, at the scale Israel is doing desalination.

Our current desalination capacity, with 2 plants, amount to only 100 million gallons per day which currently meets 25% of our needs [1].

lyonlim··on LastPass autofill exploit
Same here. I researched quite a bit before settling on 1Password. I bought separate licenses for all my devices across Mac and Windows, Android and iOS.

Beware though..their Android app does not support multiple vaults. And their Windows client is really ugly. Their iOS and Mac apps are very refined though..and I know the founder is trying to close this feature gap across platforms.

They seem to be moving towards subscription licenses with Teams and Family though...which do not require separate licenses for different platforms.

lyonlim··on LastPass autofill exploit
If autofill is potentially so dangerous, and in this instance, the prerequisite setting for this to work, why should it even be a feature?

People who enable it might not understand the repercussions.

I use 1Password and always invoke a shortcut to fill in my credentials.

lyonlim··on iPhone, iPad and Mac sales are down, but Apple only cares about services now
It was confusing at first when I switched to Mac (still have a Windows 10 laptop), but the 'Enter' to rename really saves me time, or it becomes much more natural.

And while we're on the subject of renaming files, I actually like how I can rename currently opened files.

lyonlim··on NIST declares the age of SMS-based 2-factor authentication over
Instead of SMS, wouldn't email notifications suffice? Apple (iCloud), Gmail and Salesforce does this when there's a new login on a new device.

Furthermore, I'm not too in favour of using SMS... I have two numbers and when I don't have both phones with me, it's a huge hassle. I end up setting up my phones to auto forward such smses.

I use 1Password OTP support and love how it works seamlessly across my phones.

(Edited for clarity)

lyonlim··on A practical security guide for web developers
How does this compare with Trend Micro Deep Security for Web Apps? We're using it now but it does not seem effective - not catching much in its scans. So we're looking at alternatives...
lyonlim··on Opera browser sold to a Chinese consortium for $600M
I looked at SpiderOak...but their mobile apps really need some work..that's the only thing holding me back. How's your experience using SpiderOak?
lyonlim··on Opera browser sold to a Chinese consortium for $600M
ProtonMail looks interesting as well. They recently added support for custom domains.
lyonlim··on The only way to revoke Spotify API tokens is to delete your account
Indeed. Some time back (more than one year ago), I contacted support to delink my paid account from Facebook. Their suggestion was to create a new account... and I think they helped with transferring my playlists, then deleted my Facebook-linked account.
lyonlim··on Your wife is Indian, landlord won’t rent to you
Actually, they might be referring to nationality rather than race. For example, it very common for landlords or their agents to ask about your nationality. They might be fine with a Singaporean Chinese, but PRC, maybe not.
lyonlim··on Prometheus reaches 1.0
Thanks! I always found NR Servers to be lacking, and frankly, I wanted a more service-oriented monitoring system that tells me how certain services are performing over time. I.e. our API performance, jobs..
lyonlim··on Prometheus reaches 1.0
Is it even right to try to compare this with New Relic? Prometheus looks very interesting and I'm trying to figure out if this is something useful to us. Thanks!
lyonlim··on Your wife is Indian, landlord won’t rent to you
I think it really depends on what type of property is being rented out, and whether it's a full unit or a room.

Furthermore, landlords don't choose purely on race. They also select based on the tenant's profession, or whether they are family members or friends.

Also, both landlords and tenants have the right to be as picky as they want. Tenants also actively choose landlords.

The truth is, there are many other factors that make a deal. Let's not make this about race please.

(I know this as I also recently rented a unit, and if you are curious, no, I didn't rent from a landlord that's my race profile)

lyonlim··on What Mailchimp does to make sure emails get delivered
If we only send a few hundred emails a month, but need everyone to reach customer's mailbox (transactional emails, not marketing emails), would you recommend a dedicated IP? how would I know if the dedicated IP has ever been/is blacklisted too?

We're using Mandrill, but we am looking at alternatives longer term.

lyonlim··on Ask HN: Insider history of the demise of Kodak?
Well, some forward looking companies trying to avoid being disrupted now really invest in or set up completely separate subsidiaries to explore this new areas of growth. They even go so far as to have completely different management and buildings.

The upside to this is there's no existing bias in management decisions for the new company. Instead, it offers them a potential insider look, and understanding of this new technology..and when the time comes for a pivot, they have something solid to build on.

lyonlim··on What Mailchimp does to make sure emails get delivered
I mentioned briefly in an earlier comment on our experience using SES vs Mailchimp/Mandrill.

Our emails sent through SES, often ended up in people's spam folder despite doing the requisite verifications (SPF, DKIM).

We switched to Mandrill and noticed significant improvements. We don't send alot of emails, but for transactional emails, it's important those are delivered.

Sending emails without images, in plain text, also does improve delivery especially to corporate emails.

We were exploring dedicated IPs, but those require warming up, so frankly we don't send many emails.

Love to hear any other advise for improving email delivery.

lyonlim··on What Mailchimp does to make sure emails get delivered
We tried SES first, but despite doing all the required stuff (SPF, DKIM), our delivery was very poor, especially to corporate emails. Used Mandrill and it's better now. Although, the biggest benefit we saw was switching to text-only emails. That improved delivery on several corporate networks.

Delivery is an ongoing issue though.
