lwh··on Ask HN: How can I make a “kid's computer” today as good as an Apple II?
pi or arduino with a bunch of extra parts to make things and see action. They can learn simple code basics without layers of bullshit from modern dev.

but wait... do you want them to go from that to today's dev environments? ;)

lwh··on New Colorways for Firefox 94
Will there be Iconways and Themeways as well? It would be nice to skip reading through 52 reddit posts to figure out how to fix appearances after an update.

Also what are Colour Schemes or Palettes?

lwh··on Google Finance Finally Updated
yahoo finance is okay, not 100% replacement but easier to look at overall and has many of the chart tool google removed
lwh··on Ask HN: How do you prevent eyestrain with daily computer use?
Cut screen time to the shortest possible. Stop every hour look at random distances, stretch your neck and shoulders.
lwh··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
You can modify or add extra terms to the GPL, they even have templates: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.en.html#GPLIncompatible...

Totem has an example https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/totem/-/blob/b4050524d6cd961b...

lwh··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
The original BSD license had this "advertising clause" and it was removed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_licenses#4-clause_license_...

Personally I'd rather have their source be released like AGPL, as that would credit the authors and let me see their changes.

lwh··on Wikipedia Lost 3B Organic Search Visits to Google in 2019
old.reddit.com still works
lwh··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Dell has supported Linux officially on the XPS 13 variants since 2012. https://bartongeorge.io/2020/01/01/introducing-the-2020-xps-...
lwh··on Ask HN: Optimal cloud service to run tiny website with back end Python + SQLite?
Do you know of any existing tools for this on the server(less) part and database that aren't hard to setup?
lwh··on Ask HN: Optimal cloud service to run tiny website with back end Python + SQLite?
Can your code work on AWS Lambda with one of their DB services? If you need it to scale with growth starting on a cloud platform will save headache later. If you don't need scaling it's possible you could run it on the permanently-free tiers or very low cost once you utilize the free quotas each month.
lwh··on GitHub has completed its acquisition of NPM
Many early dial-up ISPs offered static IPs for hosting FTP/HTTP/SMTP/MUDs etc.
lwh··on Bored? How about trying a Linux speed run?
sorry I was unclear. I assumed those who created ed knew how to use it - but regular people not familiar with ed would tend to use cat and echo when stuck in a broken / bare system.
lwh··on Bored? How about trying a Linux speed run?
it had 'ed' the precursor to ex and vi editors. The terminal they used was paper so not quite ready for a visually oriented editor! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teletype_Model_33) If you're stuck on a basic system or rescue shell, cat and echo are considerably more straightforward if you don't know how to use ed already.
lwh··on Bored? How about trying a Linux speed run?
These sound like things that used to be regular part of install/setup on BSD and Linux. It's so much nicer now not having to setup the network, GUI or disks. Nevermind the week of downloading all the floppy images.
lwh··on Ask HN: People working remotely, how do you plan your workday?
If people new to it are poking you more, conciously close email/slack/ticketing for a while if you are working on something.
lwh··on RFC: Adopt a modern JavaScript framework for use with MediaWiki
Not needing JS is a key feature of MediaWiki. It would be great if the old CSS+HTML skins still worked with this.
lwh··on Before Clearview Became a Police Tool, It Was a Secret Plaything of the Rich
I wonder how legislating open algorithms as illegal will work out? If you can run this reasonably on a phone building your own face/object databases how could they stop anyone from doing it?
lwh··on Linux Kernel Runtime Guard
When tickets last that long unfixed, the dev working on it now isn't hurt ;)
lwh··on Ask HN: How does your company keep track of lessons learned?
Discuss fervently, make some tickets, writeup in Confluence. Then act surprised when it happens two years from now.
lwh··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
They would have to bring something far more compelling compared to AWS if they are to gain much market share. Either in terms features or notable cost difference. Technical people with a general mistrust of them go into planning with GCP as a hesitant second or third choice. The traditional IT departments moving to Azure aren't going to consider the other vendors much when there's such a direct migration. Combined with headcount and capital cost reduction so clearly mapped out for them.
lwh··on Faces of Open Source
Wish it was no-pictures as a rule
lwh··on Being ‘Indistractable’
hyperfocused?
lwh··on We Let Machine Learning Design Logos
can you add a feature to explain the logo using nonsensical, pretentious language? this is a major factor for most people
lwh··on Off-Facebook Activity
Does this block react CDN hits?
lwh··on Todo.txt: Future-proof task tracking in a file you control
As soon as you add features to more than a one item per line list you've added useless friction.

Unless you've got org-mode then its OK

lwh··on Todo.txt: Future-proof task tracking in a file you control
Use a fucking text file
lwh··on People love working remotely
IRC for whoever is live + good email lists + discipline on wiki|docs + good PM/ticket communications is faster and more reliable than anything in person. Non-remote is a productivity disadvantage to people who need fast communication. A team of people online can say more with no interupt-crosstalk that cripples in-person "collaboration".
lwh··on Announcing Notqmail
We all killed SMTP when we pointed the morons with domains at gmail/apple/yahoo/o365, postfix was winning when it was ended- no reason to revisit it. All that matters for email is what Google/MS/Apple decide to dictate to us now.
lwh··on Nextcloud introduces social features, joins the fediverse
Ugh I just wanted a working file manager
lwh··on Ask HN: How do I explain a resume gap after taking a sabbatical?
