lvl155··on Why we built Lightpanda in Zig
This is actually a great summary of Zig. I am with the author: I am too old and stupid to use Rust properly. Whenever I watch someone like Gjengset write Rust, I realize I am doing it wrong.
lvl155··on Ghostty is now non-profit
There aren’t that many people like Mitchell. He exited Hashicorp and most people would just do typical Zuck things. For him to still have motivation to make Ghostty from scratch and Zig of all things. The guy is a coder through and through.
lvl155··on Mapping the US healthcare system’s financial flows
You can go one step further and make this a time-series. Costs skyrocketing. Quality of care actually going down across the country but especially in rural settings. Provider satisfaction plummeting. No one is happy…except greedy executives and shareholders.
lvl155··on Mapping the US healthcare system’s financial flows
It actually doesn’t incentivize innovation. That’s the biggest scam in healthcare. If it actually led to innovations and notable uptick in quality, other countries would have done the same. The whole argument is so flawed it makes my brain hurt.
lvl155··on We're committing $6.25B to give 25M children a financial head start
They rather give kids $6.25B going straight to SPX than build schools. At some point, the billionaires realized it’s best to keep Americans uneducated. They then turn around and hire all the immigrants and complain why there are so many of them in this country.

People realize this is precursor to them removing social security for this generation of kids?

lvl155··on John Giannandrea to retire from Apple
No one dares to question Apple’s culture. Perhaps something is rotten inside. The same people who milked iPhone for 14 years. But they got Vision Pro a full year after Meta proved that’s a dead end. What a joke of corporate leadership.
lvl155··on High-income job losses are cooling housing demand
Boston is seeing some headwind especially from slowdown in biotech, the main driver of growth over the past decade or so. Rents are also down. However, worth noting supply is still constrained especially if you exclude replacement-ready homes.
lvl155··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
What’s admirable is that you’ve actually applied to jobs below your pay grade. Most people won’t because doing that grind in your 40s is actually hard especially if you have kids.
lvl155··on David Lerner, cofounder of Tekserve, has died
Tekserve in the 90s was a special place.
lvl155··on Datacenters in space aren't going to work
It works if you figure out a way to have a permanent dark/light side. But really the issue is that we can do compute with light/photon and radiation and not much has been done in those areas.
lvl155··on Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
College is still worth it for maybe the top 100 schools especially well-funded state schools. Why? Because people still get hired based on such a connection alone. Think about Waterloo. It’s a mediocre school with a strong pipeline to SV. You wanna end up at SV but didn’t study hard in high school or just weren’t smart enough for MIT/Stanford? Go to Waterloo.
lvl155··on TPUs vs. GPUs and why Google is positioned to win AI race in the long term
On top, when you get locked into Google Cloud, you’re effectively at the mercy of their engineers to optimize and troubleshoot. Do you think Google will help their potential competitors before they help themselves? Highly unlikely considering their actions in the past decade plus.
lvl155··on TPUs vs. GPUs and why Google is positioned to win AI race in the long term
They literally gave away their secret sauce to OpenAI and pretended like it wasn’t a big opportunity.
lvl155··on TPUs vs. GPUs and why Google is positioned to win AI race in the long term
And they forgot to pay those people so most of them left.
lvl155··on TPUs vs. GPUs and why Google is positioned to win AI race in the long term
Right because people would love to get locked into another even more expensive platform.
lvl155··on Gemini CLI tips and tricks for agentic coding
Copilot on Opencode is not good. It’s all over the place which is a shame because Copilot is one of the best values.
lvl155··on OpenAI needs to raise at least $207B by 2030
They barely caught up after leaking talent for the past 4-5 years. I am not drinking the koolaid. A lot of talented people are going back home to China. I am 99% the next Google will come out of Asia.
lvl155··on Gemini CLI tips and tricks for agentic coding
Gemini CLI sucks. Just use Opencode if you have to use Gemini. They need to rebuild the CLI just as OAI did with Codex.
lvl155··on OpenAI needs to raise at least $207B by 2030
I don’t think LLM leader is going to come out of this AI race on top. OpenAI is like Yahoo! in my view. They were there in the beginning and led by default. Someone somewhere will be the Google of this era. It won’t be LLM but the next step. Leaps and bounds better than LLM. I also think we won’t use even 1/100th of the energy needs projected right now.
lvl155··on Is DWPD Still a Useful SSD Spec?
Always make backups to HDD and cloud (and possibly tape if you are a data nut).
lvl155··on Ilya Sutskever: We're moving from the age of scaling to the age of research
You have LLMs but you also need to model actual intelligence, not its derivative. Reasoning models are not it.
lvl155··on Implications of AI to schools
80-90% of the teachers are not equipped to handle AI in the classrooms. You can’t expect teachers to know the SOTA that’s rapidly changing. And at the same time punish students from using available tools. Especially in public schools, teaching quality has plummeted in the past decade. This also applies to lower tier colleges. The whole point of education is to learn. Not to weed out talent. If students want to use AI tools to take shortcuts then it’s entirely on them. It will catch up to them at some point.
lvl155··on PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage
This is purely price gouging because these rams are not ECC and server grade.
lvl155··on Claude Opus 4.5
I really don’t understand the hype around Gemini. Opus/Sonnet/GPT are much better for agentic workflows. Seems people get hyped for the first few days. It also has a lot to do with Claude code and Codex.
lvl155··on After my dad died, we found the love letters
Do what’s best for your son. There’s nothing that will overcome that guilt. Not saying what’s best for your son is for you to reveal the truth now or later. That’s entirely situational and only you know.
lvl155··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
It’s because their cogs is basically same. They are vertically integrated.
lvl155··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
Just a small note worth mentioning: McD do not buy things from anyone. They literally do it all from scratch. Vertically integrated.
lvl155··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
You just listed eggs, pork and chicken. They will run you way over $0.50 a plate. Even if you shop at absolute dirt cheap groceries, it’s more like $4-5 per plate when you factor in all the costs not including labor.
lvl155··on After my dad died, we found the love letters
It’s always surprising to me how so many people believe in ideals. Finding love. Living happily thereafter. These are ideals and you’d be truly lucky to have it in your life. One in a billion. Life is ephemeral. We are innately fickle beings shifting from one equilibrium to another. Yet we long for a mirage of permanence.
lvl155··on Samsung's 60% DRAM price hike signals a new phase of global memory tightening
This problem is so much worse when you look at server mobo configurations that basically jumped from 8 to 12 slots. Meaning you need 50% more sticks to saturate versus Epyc 7003/2. I was hoping to build a Genoa-X server for compute and ram cost just went bonkers (that’s on a nearly 2-yo system). I decided to shelve that idea.
