lvl155··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
This is not a viable strategy. You're effectively paying for hardware and/or cloud. Why do this when OpenAI and Anthropic are both significantly subsidizing costs to win the market?

Talk to “AI” executives at large firms and 95% of them are clueless sales types that crawled their way to the top. Then again, it is basically a repeat of IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, etc. Same dumb executives making decision to not get fired and enjoy their place at corp.

lvl155··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
You mean other than the fact that MacOS continues its slow decline? And the fact that giving your customers different options to use their hardwares would attract more even more customers?
lvl155··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
It’s a shame that Macs have leading processors and hardwares but Apple can’t make Linux first-class. I know they have full builds internally so it’s not a matter of resources.

It’s simply a business decision for Apple. And quite a dumb one at that. Here’s hoping that Ternus reverses that shortsighted decision.

lvl155··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
Man. DuckDB is one of my favorite tools in the past decade. It basically replaced pandas/Polars for me and I hope aws leaves it alone.

Otoh, I am glad those guys got paid.

lvl155··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Every time Intel/AMD gets close enough, Apple just crushes competition in terms of SoC. I don’t know who’s on that chip team but they’re world-class. Hope they get paid more than a bunch of AI idiots Meta hired to do absolutely nothing (but I know they are not even close).
lvl155··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
They sorta did right? It didn’t sell well at all.
lvl155··on Apple Introduces New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Nice for them to add Thread and 10G ethernet to base Mac Studio. If they allowed first class Linux, this could be a great home server machine. I ordered the base model. 512GB SSD scares me but would I even notice plugging in TB5 external drive?
lvl155··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Let’s be honest, it was DOA. Even Gruber admitted to it later. The whole thing was basically a scam.

Edit: I will never understand why people think ACA was so great. It was a bad policy because they couldn’t get it through whole. They passed it with all the compromises that made it DOA. You can’t fix something when you are still in denial about it being bad. ACA is not a transition to universal healthcare when you allowed massive consolidation in the space with some of the biggest companies in this country. Good luck deconstructing that mess.

lvl155··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
You mean obstacles from politicians who took money from the healthcare industry. That’s how we ended up with PPACA and they used it to justify massive cost increases and consolidations. They passed that junk to save face and now healthcare is far worse. But we “closed” the donut hole, right? Quite literally made everyone worse off and no one wants to talk about it. I still can’t believe they allowed payors such as UNH to buy up everything without ANY proper investigations during that period.
lvl155··on Stripe will reportedly acquire OpenRouter for $7B+
I’ve stopped using OpenRouter this year. And I stopped using different models for testing. Anthropic won. I’ve even let my OpenAI API credits expire (which is a ridiculous policy in itself) because I had no need for them.
lvl155··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
All the money in the world and Zuck can’t buy anything worthwhile in AI. The problem at Meta is really Zuck taking interest in AI. Perhaps the adults should steer him back toward VR unless they all left.
lvl155··on Flint: A Visualization Language for the AI Era
If you’re going to use AI, why use charting libraries? Just build it off of D3. By the way, latest models still struggle with charts/diagrams even if you specify your design system.
lvl155··on Did they ghost you?
I was once ghosted mid interview day. They left me in conference room and completely forgot. I was going to walk out after 30 minutes but I just wanted to see how long I could stay there. It took them five hours. And this was in a “highly secure” building so not sure how they invite someone to interview and let them just hangout inside the building for five hours.
lvl155··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
What if I told you writing in all caps is even better for your brain.
lvl155··on Intel Starts Shipping High-NA EUV Silicon
Basically most of the technology was US govt funded at some point. Now the Dutch can just leech off of that. I guess that’s what they’re good at considering their long history with VOC and “mercantilism”.
lvl155··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
So they used pirated materials to train their models but others can’t use their models for training even if you pay.
lvl155··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
It is not SOTA. Give me a break. Sure, run it on Cerebras to get speed but that’s pretty much its advantage.
lvl155··on Jack Dorsey launches Buzz to combine team chat, AI agents and Git hosting
As much as I detest Zuck, he was right about Twitter guys.
lvl155··on Blender 5.2 LTS
Even if you never use Blender, I highly recommend you to donate to the organization if you happen to donate to non-profit tech organizations/projects.
lvl155··on Blender 5.2 LTS
It’d pretty much Houdini plus render engine of your choice. Blender will eventually get there especially if someone rolls out an AI module.
lvl155··on GPT-5.6 used a prompt to close a 30-year gap in convex optimization
Intelligence was always relatively cheap. You can pick up a phone and get answers for free in most academic settings.
lvl155··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
Company run by consultants and MBAs.
lvl155··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Say what you want about these Chinese models but they sure create competition and urgency in the space.
lvl155··on Codex Micro
If this is a sign of what’s to come from OAI, it’s going to be worse than Meta devices.
lvl155··on Completing a computer science degree on Coursera
CS degree is not all that fun. You’re better off doing math and just learning to code on the side.
lvl155··on Completing a computer science degree on Coursera
To be fair, you do research at school.
lvl155··on Anthropic requires 30 day data retention for Fable and Mythos
I actually think that’s warranted. And if you used it to poke around, you would also agree.
lvl155··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
This is like asking why isn’t the US better at Cricket.
lvl155··on SQLite is all you need for durable workflows
And all you need is pen and paper to do calculations.
lvl155··on Bricks and Minifigs Stole a Man's $200k Lego Collection
Adults ruined LEGO. There I said it.
