lurkinggrue··on The success of Project Ara depends on Toshiba
You may not have but I've upgraded my computer several times in the past year. I've added more ram, different video card.
lurkinggrue··on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Government Surveillance [ft. Edward Snowden]
Just curious: If you had been at time square would you have avoided his cameras?
lurkinggrue··on 3 monitors won't solve your problems
I know I need a 4th monitor.
lurkinggrue··on Some Problems Shouldn't Be Solved
It's amazing how much effort an end user will to to not read error messages.

I just got a screen grab from a user asking "What does this mean?" and the error was "Not enough space on disk."

lurkinggrue··on Some Problems Shouldn't Be Solved
I tend to put a long 64 character hash as answers to the security questions. Have yet to experience that horrible bug.
lurkinggrue··on Some Problems Shouldn't Be Solved
It's probably to stop people from doing hunter hunter2 hunter3 as passwords.
lurkinggrue··on Some Problems Shouldn't Be Solved
Given it is hashing what you type I don't see a reason to limit it.
lurkinggrue··on Some Problems Shouldn't Be Solved
What I hate is when you enter in a ton of info into a form and one of those fields is password. You make a mistake on something like the phone number and it wipes out the password field forcing you to type it again only to have the process happen again because it failed to tell you another error in your data.

WHY!?!?!

I haven't in decades.

But then I live in Southern California and nobody walks here.

lurkinggrue··on Macbook screen coating issues
One of the reasons I just love the new Zenbook UX305. Thinner than the new macbook, higher res screen/webcam, 3 usb3 ports, hdmi and sdcard and fanless... and a damn matte screen for $699.

I'm really happy with this machine.

lurkinggrue··on We Buy Broken Gold
I guess I should be happy that I'm gay and the state won't let me get married so I don't have to deal with this BS.

But then I've also been with the same person for 19 years who also things the ring this is a scam.

lurkinggrue··on Telehack – Relive the usenet/arpa culture from the 80's
Wow! This does bring back memories.
lurkinggrue··on Thomas Edison's 146 question interview for prospective employees
All right, so that last test was seriously disappointing. Apparently, being civil isn't motivating you, so let's try it her way, all right, fatty? Adopted... fatty! Fatty, fatty no parents?
lurkinggrue··on Thomas Edison's 146 question interview for prospective employees
That was also my reaction to reading the quiz.
lurkinggrue··on Firefox 36.0 released
Wow, Damn Hello is back even though I disabled it.

Gee, Thanks.

lurkinggrue··on Komodia SSL certificates are in many products
I'm sure it isn't that hard for somebody to get their hands on the private keys for those products and I bet they used the same password.

Edit: LOL, ok so the keys are right there on that link. Nice!

lurkinggrue··on Komodia SSL certificates are in many products
Dell is about the only manufacturer that will let you get generic install DVDs. They use a bios based licensing system these days so you don't even have to deal with those issues so much.

lurkinggrue··on Komodia SSL certificates are in many products
I just did this on my new Zenbook and it was extremely easy install.

Though I was installing from an MSDN install DVD which isn't something everybody would have on hand.

lurkinggrue··on Ask HN: TrueCrypt audit status?
I can imagine all the ways an os can leak information if it isn't fully encrypted at a sector level.

Just having the filnames is an serious risk.

lurkinggrue··on Radio Shack lost its way when it ditched its hobbyist customers
And yet they had no problems selling those pocket tone dialer you could mod into a pay phone red box and make free phone calls.
lurkinggrue··on Ask HN: Do you hate iTunes?
I disliked iTunes so much I just avoided all Apple products and removed all Apple software from my life.

Never looked back.

lurkinggrue··on Dropbox for Gmail
Does not work with Firefox.
lurkinggrue··on I Am Releasing Ten Million Passwords
Cool! My password hunter2 wasn't at the top of the list!
lurkinggrue··on Microsoft Launches Outlook for iOS and Android
Shame this is simplistic to the point of nearly being useless.
lurkinggrue··on Microsoft Launches Outlook for iOS and Android
Try touchdown instead?
lurkinggrue··on Microsoft Launches Outlook for iOS and Android
Wow, this is a painful app for me to use. I have a subfolder of people I need to deal with that mail gets sorted into but this I have to drill down to get to it and can't set it as a default view.

This thing is simplistic and horrible.

lurkinggrue··on Nobody Knows What an iPad Is Good for Anymore
Never found a use case with a tablet that worked for me. I have my main PC, a laptop and a large phone.

Then again I was never one to sit on a couch and watch tv with a laptop so I figured I was not in the right demographic for an ipad.
