Telehack – Relive the usenet/arpa culture from the 80's

It's fun to look back at that time from today and think how primitive it looks, but the important thing to realize that in the 1980s we were getting real global networking working pretty well between universities and it was... amazing. What this demo can't give you is the feeling of being able to connect with all those people around the world.

On a similar note, I recently found sdf.org, which provide a free UNIX system much in the 90s fashion. Includes text-based games, email, web, gopher, and real people. More or less, everything we used to have in college when the internet hadn't still arrived in our homes.

I recommend everybody to try it and donate to the cause (I did, otherwise I wouldn't preach). It's amazing that systems like this are still around; probably because it's so niche that the maintenance is manageable by a small team.

Nevertheless, it allowed me to experience again the awe of my first internet connections.

Not trying to be antagonizing but it doesn't seem to work on my nexus tablet. Screenshot with version info : https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B423NJPhUeLbVEJ5TVg2OWlYOEE/...

This really brings back memories ... and reminds me that I'm old!

wow, I'm really impressed the by the level of detail. Does Telehack's shell expose some real UNIX commands running on your host, or is ever command re-created for Telehack?

Brings me back to the time I tried DragonFlyBSD and couldn't get a browser working. Telehack over telnet was better than anything through Lynx.

Look interesting as I explored. Any specific objective other than the gaming side of it?

"thanks for letting us hack your system"

you're welcome, I guess.

Wow! This does bring back memories.

Ha, zork is on there. Nice.
