lurkerforawhile··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
it makes so much sense. a small team of experts maintaining a rock-solid base configuration providing the essentials, which can then be built on top of for agency/department or even personal specifics - all declarative, immutable, cachable, testable. I can't think of a better tool for the job.
lurkerforawhile··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
there's a market for a gig-economy app where someone brings a toilet to you.
lurkerforawhile··on Keyv and friends compromised in active Shai-Hulud supply chain attack
left-pad was over a decade ago. it's a problem with the registry itself, more than just the package manager.
lurkerforawhile··on The myth of Snow Leopard
fond fond fond memories of Snow Leopard. I was just a kid back then, so I guess I missed the complaints that people are mentioning here, but even back then no shiny new features but an improved and refined product seemed like a good/brave idea. something I'd like to see more of.
lurkerforawhile··on Microsoft is using TPM chips to crack down on pirated Windows activations
still not convinced TPM actually does anything useful for an end user.
lurkerforawhile··on Remote Attestation
this stuff should only be used for military and other high risk environments. it's an anti-consumer, anti-reuse, e-waste generating nightmare.

Firmware anti-downgrade functionality with eFuses is common across all kinds of consumer devices. The physical evidence is there, if you can find it.

lurkerforawhile··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
so externalizing environmental and social costs is fine, as long as the numbers are big enough?

they have four trillion dollars buddy they'll be okay.
lurkerforawhile··on Browsers Are Weird
I've always considered Brave to be the most homophobic of browsers and it's lovely to see that recognised.

If you want to use web browser created by someone who financially supported the gatekeeping of marriage, go right ahead.

lurkerforawhile··on Orange Site Hit
Here's another one:

Non-monogamous people are responsible for spreading sexual diseases

Discourse about reproductive health can be a ride on HN.

Gutenberg has been a nightmare from the beginning. Saving structured data into the post HTML field severely limited the benefits of migrating content into blocks. Last time I checked, getting block data via the REST API wasn't officially supported, so making a headless site requires extra plugins.

When you reach that point you may as well be using ACF, as it's so much simpler and doesn't require rebuilding frontend scripts anytime anything changes.

lurkerforawhile··on In search of the least viewed article on Wikipedia (2022)
That's a good read. I'm glad it wasn't deleted.
lurkerforawhile··on 2023 UNAIDS global AIDS update
If we're placing blame, it also didn't help that the Catholic community advocated against preventative measures throughout the AIDS crisis.
lurkerforawhile··on The SEO arms race has left Google and the web drowning in garbage text
Google is culpable here. With it's seemingly infinite resources they have curated a fragile web, while failing to derank obvious spam and cloned content. To me, this seems more like inaction and misaligned incentives, which makes sense when you consider that the SEO and Adtech industries are bedfellows.
lurkerforawhile··on Stack Overflow Moderation Strike Update
As someone with a 9-year-old account on SO, I have never asked a question there because I didn't fancy the chance of it being immediately shut down.

From personal experience, I have come across numerous questions that appeared to address the exact issue I was struggling with, only to find them closed as duplicates, off-topic, or something similar. Often, the suggested alternative Q&As are unrelated except for the surface-level similarity, which is especially frustrating.

Sometimes, when I find one of these closed questions, I feel a strong sense of empathy towards the asker, as if I'm the only person out there who understands them.

Unfortunately, I have always been primarily occupied with whatever problems I was dealing with at the time, so I don't have a list of examples I can share with you.

SO is undoubtedly a valuable resource, and I don't completely disagree with the moderation style. However, it has been a slow burn for me.

lurkerforawhile··on After 30 years, a father is exonerated in 'Satanic panic' case
I too have noticed some quite transphobic attitudes on HN over the past year or so. It's been a bit shocking at times.

I have considered emailing the admins to state my concerns, or creating an account here to add another voice to threads when things start heading in that direction - but ultimately it seems futile as transphobia seems to have ramped up everywhere recently. It's scary.

Of all the wonderful trans people I know in the real world, very few are getting the medical assistance they need. Those people are fortunate enough to pay for private care, and even then the level of care they are getting is barely acceptable. My other trans friends are approaching their 30s and still on waiting lists.

Many things presented as fact in this thread do not line up with my experiences of trans issues and the wider LGBTQ community. In my opinion many users on HN are truly insightful about tech and programming, but utterly heartless when it comes to social issues.
