lurker213··on Chemical analysis and origin of the smell of line-dried laundry
Good to see tax payer dollars are tackling the important questions.
lurker213··on Ask HN: Has anybody shipped a web app at scale with 1 DB per account?
I like having one DB and defining RLS rules (in postgresql) for the majority of my tables. I also have all 'business entity' tables relate back to one table called records, which has a tenant_id on it and timestamps on it. This way I can keep FK constraints without doing the silly polymorphic rails model stuff.
lurker213··on Young Join the Rich Fleeing America’s Big Cities for Suburbs
probably at least for one election cycle, until the blue voters that moved to the suburbs see how blue policies make it worse for them in the suburbs, and then start voting red (or whatever colour looks after their interests better) :p
lurker213··on Microsoft loves Linux – a little too much?
Looks like Microsoft is always going to be Microsoft. People that think they have turned a new leaf and are all different and hip thanks to Satya are kidding themselves.
lurker213··on Young Join the Rich Fleeing America’s Big Cities for Suburbs
I moved from a big city to a small provincial town, the town is big enough to have everything I need. I sold my apartment in the big city and with that money, have financed the purchase of two houses with land. Luckily I have still been able to keep my clients in the big city and work remotely (and for big city rates). It can work for some people, especially in our industry.
lurker213··on Hungary's emergency law 'incompatible with being in EU', say MEPs group
completely agree, the EU has to die.
lurker213··on Chelsea Manning Tries to Kill Herself in Jail, Lawyers Say
what happened to you Paul?
lurker213··on Chelsea Manning Tries to Kill Herself in Jail, Lawyers Say
love the downvoting happening here for politically incorrect, but factual things.
lurker213··on Vulnerable Nations Call for Ecocide to Be Recognized as an International Crime
sounds like a shit movie. Would most likely flop like all the other 'woke' films coming out of Hollywood these days.

Pitch it to Netflix though, they'll most likely accept it.

lurker213··on U.S. Readies $11B in Tariffs on E.U
that seems pretty stupid of them doesn't it?
lurker213··on Why I believe Rails is still relevant in 2019
In my opinion, Rails / Ruby is nearly unbeatable in terms of productivity when you add trailblazer to the mix.
lurker213··on Firefox enables deprecated Fido U2F Support for Google Accounts
if you are on linux and using the flatpak version of firefox it could be because of sandboxing and USB read permissions.
lurker213··on Panic's Next Code Editor (Coda Successor)
the only way I see this having any chance is if they make it able to load textmate / vscode / sublime text extensions
lurker213··on France Plans 5% Digital Tax as Governments Chase Internet Giants
you do know that the citizens of said country pay tax for that infrastructure right? failing governments should stop using big companies as scapegoats. the bits and bytes used by FB and other big companies aren't degrading the fibre optics like a highway...

what I find funny is that if politicians wanted to close these tax loopholes, they could, I think they'd rather keep them open for them and their friends to use. The optics are better if they point the finger at something foreign and say 'oooh they are the bad ones', even though technically they are not breaking any laws.

I say this not as a fan of Facebook or Google. But you need to be realistic about government's always wanting more money.

lurker213··on France Plans 5% Digital Tax as Governments Chase Internet Giants
why are governments such parasites? wanting to stick their finger in every pie?
lurker213··on California keeps a secret list of criminal cops, but says you can’t have it
people can't have it both ways!
lurker213··on First .dev Domains Go Live

lurker213··on Networks of major Australian political parties affected by cyber attack
what would Russia have to gain? my bets are China. They really act with impunity in this region of the world.
lurker213··on GM to lay off 4,250 salaried workers in North America starting Monday
No, the issue are the unions.

lurker213··on Open-Source Controller for the IKEA Bekant Standing Desk
The standing desk I have is super solid, I went onto alibaba and ordered two frames directly from the manufacturer, in total I paid about NZD$300 including shipping for each of them, I bought a benchtop, put a nice edge on it with a router and then oiled it. currently have a 27" imac and a 27" monitor on a vesa mount and no wobble whatsoever. I highly recommend going this route, far cheaper than a premade product. The electronics are a bit chinese, but they work fine.

edit: just looking at the uplift desk, I think it was the same manufacturer they use, as my frame looks exactly the same, and the weight loadings are the same.
