I post from my mobile, an HN's textareas fail on 8-or-more-line input. I apologize for curt comments.

lurker19··on MG Siegler Will Become Our Apple Columnist, And Join CrunchFund As A VC
MG has been a successful Arrington employee/teammate for years, so...

Jessica never sold a startup, but seems to do fine on a VC team.

This is perceptive. 419 is like any other advertising: if you think it is stupid, you are not in the target market, but someone else is.

Who communicates in all caps? The elderly and the mentally ill. Target market.

lurker19··on Lies, Damn Lies and Photoshop
Meat. Cheesy. Spirits.

Sorry.

lurker19··on What it costs to live in Japan
So one should rent from a Yakuza, now that these bribes are illegal to pay.
lurker19··on What it costs to live in Japan
s/dont/only/

You only have to pay for the gap time until a new tenant moves in. Basically the renter provides vacancy insurance, not a guaranteed sum.

lurker19··on What it costs to live in Japan
You mean last two months' rent. The two you pay in advance.

lurker19··on I Think Your App Should Be Free
The phone company steals from me every time my DSL fails and I spend an hour on the phone with a tech or by another replacement modem.

HTC steals from me every time the USB cable doesn't dock securely in the port.

Microsoft steals from me every time Windows crashes.

lurker19··on I Think Your App Should Be Free
It is still a highly synthetic violation from a particular and recent legal theory however you slice it.

lurker19··on When "clever" goes wrong: how Etsy overcame poor architectural choices
I hope your code is compatible with mixed schemas. Otherwise your NoSQL is just moving the problem somewhere harder to test.
lurker19··on When "clever" goes wrong: how Etsy overcame poor architectural choices
The insane part is that a startup has bureaucracy, not that code is in a RDBMS.
lurker19··on Meeting People
I felt the same way for a long time. But you have to ask, to good things happen for you because the world is fair, or because you are a rainmaker, or because you are lucky enough that a rainmaker loves you?

My parents were rainmakers, which was great except that I took too long to realize it, including the time I spent at one of the most rewarding networking-intensive organizations in the world, and I refused to network.

Eventually I realized that I was taking advantage of a social structure that someone built for me, but I wasn't helping builds it further. At first, I was just guilty of a self-centered selfishness. Later, the free ride slowed down. Now it is up to me to help the wheels turn, or just coast to a stop. Networking isn't evil. It is a tool you can use for good or evil. Networks are not free, but they can tolerate someone free riding temporarily.

You once had to learn to use a toilet and wash dishes and write thank-you notes, too. If you don't do directly yourself, you depend on someone to slaughter animals or pull vegetableout out of the ground (someone who expects something on return) that all disgusting and fake?

lurker19··on The Elite Programming Language Fallacy
I think you are agreeing with Jun8, but it is confusing because "elite" has a subtle meaning (not just "99%ile quality") and it is not being defined here.
lurker19··on The Elite Programming Language Fallacy
Not just rigor. Haskell is very difficult to debug performance issues of, and is hard to use when manage changing state.

Haskell shines when used to manage a sophisticated computation of a static result, not a constantly changing dataset.

Haskell is a great way to learn stateless pure programming style, since it forces a lot of discipline. Haskell makes you a better Java/Lisp/Python/C programmer. (Except that it will make you write inefficient Java if you get too accustomed to the idioms that are efficient Haskell)

lurker19··on The Elite Programming Language Fallacy
No one here said it was.
lurker19··on It shouldn't take 64 lines of code to do something really simple
"Messy dependencies across rows" is exactly how Python whitespace works. That data file exactly Pythonic indentation in the main content section.

lurker19··on It shouldn't take 64 lines of code to do something really simple
Sounds like Excel.

Where do you work that uses Haskell in the office?

lurker19··on Is Haskell the Cure?
Haskell broke the Programming Language Shootout by the compiler and runtime optimizing the busy-loop tasks into no-ops and memoizations.

It is hard to write a Haskell program that is gimped enough to be in league with other languages in a synthetic benchmark.

lurker19··on Google Joins Apple in Push for Tax Holiday
The corporations' managers cross the line from self-interested to sociopatgic when they pass from enjoying current laws to lobbying (bribing) for new laws to suit heir interests.

lurker19··on Google Joins Apple in Push for Tax Holiday
Do you hate what your mom's sewing machine because she buys you ugly clothes.

If you hate spending, fight the spending. Federal government has only the weakest correlation between tax levels and spend levels.

Does making rail more efficient keep trucks off the road and not damaging highways?
lurker19··on Google Joins Apple in Push for Tax Holiday
Lowering taxes does not stop the military. Spending is one side, taxing is the other. Bills that run up must be paid, or war fought over them. The solution to overspending is to find a way to stop the spending.

Regarding old people, as a group they worked pretty hard to build the modern world and its conveniences and efficiencies that we enjoy, so I don't mind paying them dividends.

lurker19··on Google Joins Apple in Push for Tax Holiday
We have employer based health insurance in the US because insurance works on a group level, not individual level, when the risk being insured is not under the control of the consumer.

We have employer-based health care, and transit subsidy, and meal subsidy, and all that crap, because of stupid tax laws, yes.

lurker19··on Goodbye to the Yakuza
If someone refuses to provide a legally required service or threatens to perform an illegal act unless paid, then that payment is evidence of being a victim of extortion or blackmail, not a perpetrator of a bribe. Is the law in India so backward that they call that a bribe?
