luplex··on Why haven't local-first apps become popular?
Apps that let you manipulate artifacts are often local. MS Office, Photoshop, Blender, CAD tools. But it turns out that actually, humans rarely work or live alone, and you can't facilitate communication through a local-first app.
luplex··on Do blogs need to be so lonely?
Good tools can enable community blogging.

I think the effective altruism forum (1) is one of the main reasons why the community is able to have produce so much output.

luplex··on The "Zero" Email Client
Recently came across this, I wonder what the HN crowd thinks about it!
luplex··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
TK is great if you're on public health insurance. If you qualify for switching to private health insurance, you might find cheaper and better contracts for the cost of more bureaucracy and that having kids costs extra.
luplex··on Sunsethue – Forecast Sunset Beauty
I signed up for this awesome site recently, and now I get an email reminder when there's a good chance of a beautiful sunset!
luplex··on We use our own hardware at Fastmail
In the public sector, cloud solves the procurement problem. You just need to go through the yearlong process once to use a cloud service, instead of for each purchase > 1000€.
luplex··on Bluesky is on the verge of overtaking Threads in all the ways that matter
Not necessarily. There could be different types of content that requires different types of creators, like imagine professional video producers vs your friends posting about their day. There could also be a different algorithm/network that allows for a few creators to feed a large number of consumers.
luplex··on XMPP: The Gem of Instant Messaging
I can recommend beeper! I don't use it for encrypted messengers because I don't want to accidentally leak incoming messages that were sent with the expectation of e2ee. But it's great for catching a few of the odd ones.
luplex··on Battleships Logic Puzzle
I usually play it on here: https://gridgames.app/battleships/

In this version, the field can be prefilled with some ship parts

luplex··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
Yep, it's not really meant for tourists. They really want everyone to stay in the subscription model, because it's heavily subsidized, so they need to hit a high enough LTV anyways.
luplex··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
Even at 58€/month, it's great value for me, as my employer pays half the price and I live in a big city.

If you live in a smaller town or in the countryside, then your problem really isn't the price of public transport, but the quality.

luplex··on Dikembe Mutombo has died
Taller people usually have bigger heads and, I think, bigger brains.

This doesn't mean they are more intelligent.

luplex··on How we made Jupyter notebooks load faster
In the end, usability wins. In a Jupyter notebook, you have a much better idea of state between cells, you can iterate much faster, you can write documentation in readable markdown. Often, Jupiter notebooks are more like interactive markdown than they are like python scripts.
luplex··on Collection of Dark Patterns and Unethical Design
It might well be true.
luplex··on Fitting an elephant with four non-zero parameters
I mean the devil is in the details. In Reinforcement Learning, the target moves! In deep learning, you often do things like early stopping to prevent too much optimization.
luplex··on Speed limiters now mandatory in all new EU cars
I mean no, because there's (as of July 2024) no speed limit on the Autobahn.
luplex··on By harnessing wind power, high-tech sails can help cut marine pollution
Naively yes, it will be reduced, because these sails are not free.
luplex··on I'm forking Ladybird and stepping down as SerenityOS BDFL
No, that's actually the point of faster chips: To make software development less challenging and cheaper.
luplex··on A global plastic treaty will only work if it caps production, modeling shows
The European Commission is working on the new EURO7 standard for car emissions, which will include new standards and targets for tire (and brake) wear. I tried to find specifics and they don't seem to be publicly known yet.

But yes, I do expect significant progress on this in the next few years!

luplex··on How do you accidentally run for President of Iceland?
Nope, there definitely is an english-language version, at least of the site that's live now.

luplex··on Show HN: Balancing game for the mobile browser with increasing difficulty
Didn't work on Brave on Android, but it did work on Chrome :)

Kind of fun

luplex··on U-M finds students with alphabetically lower-ranked names receive lower grades
There are many notions of "fairness", many of which are logically incompatible with each other.

In this example, I think it's kind of fair to give everyone an equal chance of being advantaged. You're not hurting anyone specifically.

luplex··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
I don't think the main problem with social media is the occasional inappropriate content.

The main problem is that most of the "appropriate" content is soul-sucking, biased, addictive and empty of substance.

luplex··on Finding lead in Stanley's Quencher
Stanley hired the guy that made Crocs cool before, so he knows what he is doing.
luplex··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
Kreuzberg is a borough in Berlin with 150k inhabitants, and it used to be divided into two postcodes: 36 and 61.

36 is the cooler, poorer, more political, younger half of the borough, it really was a center for non-conformists after reunification, but it's being gentrified these days.

luplex··on Weather forecasts have become more accurate
I think it means "for any given point in the specified area, and for any given point in time, p(rain)=50%

So it of course won't rain for exactly 50% of the time on a given day, but over the long run, it will.

luplex··on S.3819 – Shrinkflation Prevention Act of 2024
I have seen this in every store in a bunch of EU member states, so my guess is it's an EU thing
luplex··on Opus 1.5 released: Opus gets a machine learning upgrade
I wonder: did they address common ML ethics questions? Specifically: Are the ML algorithms better/worse on male than on female speech? How about different languages or dialects? Are they specifically tuned for speech at all, or do they also work well for music or birdsong?

That said, the examples are impressive and I can't wait for this level of understandability to become standard in my calls.

luplex··on Wintergatan Marble Machine (2016) [video]
So he said that he misrepresented how good the MMX was in order to make good content. Apparently, it was still too unreliable to actually be usable.

So for the MM3, he decided to do more engineering and less good content. His videos are less interesting since, and contain less music.

luplex··on Via ferratas are finally catching on in the United States
It's still unfamiliar terrain, and a guide will help you find the start of the route, will help you get through a difficult spot and can perform first aid if needed. So if you're not an experienced hiker and climber, going with a guide will make everything go smoother the first time.
