luminaobscura··on Google gave investors a $70B buyback,and laid off 12,000 people
Passive shareholders bought the shares at IPO. IPOs are the reason why we have these large public companies. Passive shareholders deserve the profits.

yes. Capitalism is the best system. Even in communist china, only after transitioning to market capitalism they got tech companies producing prosperity.

We also allow forming other kinds of companies. You can create worker cooperative tech company that has more diverse goal instead of just making money.

luminaobscura··on Airbnb removed my negative review
Woow so if airbnb sees this thread they may ban me ha?
luminaobscura··on Airbnb removed my negative review
i wrote the review after receiving an email from airbnb: "You can leave a review for your host even though the trip was cancelled"
luminaobscura··on Airbnb removed my negative review
They actually requested a review after cancelling this stay due to cash deposit issue. Whole thing is bizarre.
luminaobscura··on Reversing hearing loss with regenerative therapy
I lost one of my ears in a high fever episode when i was a child. I guess what you wrote means i shouldn't get my hopes up for these kind of treatments :(
luminaobscura··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
I seriously think declaring something "far-right dog whistle" is a leftist dog whistle, signaling good progressives should oppose that something. After saying this, usually no serious arguments are given. Because they are not needed after declaring an idea the enemy.

Cycles in history is of course not "of course not true". in any complex system, there are oscillations. Most famous is economical boom and boost cycle.

Meme is not without merit. The reason we are able to discuss things like gender/race equity in marine corps promotions is precisely because these are good times. And this lack of focus may lead to bad times eventually.

luminaobscura··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
Who said Bodily autonomy is bad? They are just explaining the consequences of it in human species.

Access to women's body obviously important for men (sex, kids etc.). Why is this even a question?

luminaobscura··on I Am Bezos
If I make an invention that provides $1000 value to 100 million people, the work i put in is worth $100B. It doesn't matter if i did that in a day or decade.
luminaobscura··on Uighur camp detainees allege systematic rape
donation page reads: "Your support will allow us to: - Provide emergency humanitarian relief for Uyghur refugees - Interview concentration camp survivors and help tell their story to the world - Campaign to end "business as usual" while Uyghurs are suffering crimes against humanity"

Which one these do you despise exactly?

So they are a sub-group of whites. they have distinct culture and also some distinct genetic make up (look for Ashkenazi Jewish Genetic Panel)

If this sub group has more privilege, don't we want equity for other sub groups?

luminaobscura··on Young U.S. men having a lot less sex in the 21st century, study shows
It shouldn't be surprising. It's established that IQ correlates with less sex. especially in west.
luminaobscura··on In 2019, there were only 13 PhDs in CS granted to African Americans in the U.S. [pdf]
If a group has "fewer resources and more stresses" "when growing up", we should try to address that directly.

This doesn't mean universities doesn't present equal opportunity.

The reason someone is not as capable may be just bad luck (bad parents etc.). But still, society should give positions to most capable ones.

luminaobscura··on In 2019, there were only 13 PhDs in CS granted to African Americans in the U.S. [pdf]
If it was all socioeconomics, you could see that in the data. You would control for parent's income and/or education, and you would see disparity disappear.

I don't know what is the primary cause of disparities but i wouldn't assume it's all socioeconomics without evidence.

Maybe different groups are valuing things differently? For example, an Indian may try to migrate to US using PHD as a gateway. So they may be more willing to sacrifice and work hard. Or maybe for some groups PHD (or education in general) brings more prestige compared to others.

luminaobscura··on Is a trillion dollars’ worth of programming lying on the ground?
Google for example has large offices in Europe. Like in London or Warsaw. They pay significantly less there and find no difficulty hiring people. What i don't understand is why Google still have majority of their engineers in US. Why not hire more in abroad? Makes zero financial sense to me.
luminaobscura··on Talking about white privilege causes reduction in support for politicians
Don't know about Hollywood but NBA is both. Meritocracy selecting privileged genes.
luminaobscura··on Talking about white privilege causes reduction in support for politicians
Being white has advantages, that's true.

Being black can also have advantages (affirmative action).

But no one uses "black privilege". Because everyone is aware that most of the blacks are, in sum, more disadvantaged compared to median citizen.

Some of the whites are also more disadvantaged. If I were one of them, i would be equally repulsed by "white privilege"

luminaobscura··on Talking about white privilege causes reduction in support for politicians
Yeah, I think a better framing is "black disadvantage". Whites won't object to this.

well then you could just do affirmative action based in family income? even if most of the beneficiary of this could be African Americans, everyone would be fine with it. Why make it a race issue?
luminaobscura··on The software industry's greatest sin: hiring

luminaobscura··on Boeing’s Responsibility in a Deadly Crash ‘Got Buried’
"Even a fix now proposed for the Max has similarities with the past: After the crash near Amsterdam, the F.A.A. required airlines to install a software update for the NG that compared data from the plane’s two sensors, rather than relying on just one. The software change Boeing has developed for the Max also compares data from two sensors.

Critically, in the case of the NG, Boeing had already developed the software fix well before the Turkish Airlines crash, including it on new planes starting in 2006 and offering it as an optional update on hundreds of other aircraft. But for some older jets, including the one that crashed near Amsterdam, the update wouldn’t work, and Boeing did not develop a compatible version until after the accident."

luminaobscura··on Insured price $2,758, cash price $521
1. Forbid different pricing for different payers.

2. All prices have to be posted on your website.

3. Patient has to agree on the bill beforehand.

(ER is the exception obviously)

luminaobscura··on A Black Hole Engulfing the World's Bond Markets
Hold cash how?

If you mean holding in a bank. Some European banks are already charging negative rates for large deposits. They have to, because ECB is charging them. You see, all money is either physical or credit or excess reserves deposited at ECB. There is no electronic money outside of ECB system.

If you mean physical, it's also costly. Vaults, protection etc. And to make this option harder, they cancelled the 500 Euro. If people starts piling up 200s, they will cancel that too.

i think this needs to be analyzed per gender. Because 2 curves are very different.

Female participation rates have been rising historically and it's completely recovered to pre-2008 levels https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LREM25FEUSM156N

Whereas, male participation rates are declining and did not recovered completely yet. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LREM25MAUSM156N
