For top paying companies (goog/fb/netflix/uber...), here are the total compensation ranges i derived from various Blind threads:

3. (entry level) software engineer : $175k-$225k

4. (experienced or phd) software engineer : $225k-$300k

5. senior software engineer: $300k-$400k

6. staff software engineer/engineering manager: $400k-$550k

7. senior staff software engineer/senior engineering manager: $550k-$750k

8. principal engineer/engineering director: $750k - $1m

As a data point, my own comp. is above the corresponding range here due to stock appreciation.

Below comment from nytimes (and linked article/tweet thread) captures the stupidity of the SF politics very well.

These are the kind of people Square is supporting: racist, ageist developer shills.

woow :)

what if i want a classic desktop app and metro app together?

luminaobscura··on Windows 8 hits RTM status
i really dont understand why metro apps run full screen on desktop pc. i have a 30" 2560x1600 monitor and metro apps seem ridiculous. i have 4 million pixels but i cannot see three metro apps together. what a silly idea.

so actually Top 10% pays more than 70% of the taxes when we also consider capital gains (because they are the ones who play with the capital)

well, i think we all should be grateful for the %10, we are basically funded by them. Thank you rich folks!

luminaobscura··on Leadership, Strategy and Qt
of course the root cause is not Elop. But Elop grossly mishandled the situation and now company is near bankruptcy. If only Elop had been more cautious, nokia would be still profitable and maybe in a position to utilize this great QT technology which they invested a lot. There was no need to declare the death of Symbian and MeeGo so early. There was no reason to jump to Windows Phone bandwagon as their sole hope a year before WP8. And Elop was aware that WP7 devices would not receive update to WP8.

What a shame...

Aside from timing and suicidal memos, given the obvious incompetency of Elop, I doubt WP was the right decision at all. Of course I do not have all the information that Elop had back then, but I wonder did they consider other options, such as forking android (maybe in cooperation with amazon), seriously. I wonder what role his previous employment played here.

luminaobscura··on Leadership, Strategy and Qt
> 4) The blame for Nokia's current woes does not lie with Elop and his current strategy. It lies with the previous one.

wrong. see http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2011/12/calcula...

luminaobscura··on Oracle v. Google - Judge Alsup Rules APIs Not Protected By Copyright
"For example, Java-based code using the replicated parts of the 37 API packages will run on Android but will not if a 38th package is needed. Such imperfect interoperability leads to a “fragmentation” — a Balkanization — of platforms, a circumstance which Sun and Oracle have tried to curb via their licensing programs. In this litigation, Oracle has made much of this problem, at times almost leaving the impression that if only Google had replicated all 166 Java API packages, Oracle would not have sued."

luminaobscura··on Hunting Down My Son's Killer
"just" refers to easiness of the alternative route, nothing more. i didn't mean it should be an easy decision.(I am not a native English speaker.) I realize that this is a very painful situation for the family.

regarding your question, there are two different scenarios:

1- my son reaches the necessary neural development stage so that he is conscious, self-aware, interacts with other humans etc. then we can't kill him unless he requests it.

2- he has never reached that stage so he has not any personality, memory etc. then we can kill him. because there is not really a "son" here, not yet.

in fact, we humans continously kill pigs, dolphins and other animals that are more intelligent and conscious than a newborn.

luminaobscura··on Introduction to CUDA C
i thought "local memory" refers to thread-local memory, i.e: registers (you didn't count this elsewhere)

and i am not sure "page aligned" and "page-pinned" are the same thing.

luminaobscura··on Introduction to CUDA C
well there are more types :) shared memory: which is reserved for the SM (a bunch of CUDA cores) so that cores in the same block (SM) can share data. pinned memory: you can disable OS paging in the RAM (since CUDA operates in the driver level)

luminaobscura··on State paid $22K each for Internet routers
where is the straw man?
luminaobscura··on State paid $22K each for Internet routers
i live in a developing country. I am thinking what would happen here if a state offical had 24 million in his hands to spend on the infrastructure? The official may be corrupt and this thing may never go to proper bidding. So official and a company would share say 10 million as the profit. But 14 million would still go to something useful.

In this story, at least 20 million of the money seems to be completely wasted. (Higher capacity router does not mean better internet access for 4-computer lib.)

Wait, not finished. So our corrupt official has 2 million in his hands. He may buy a car or a house, but probably he would spend it for something useful. So much of the value would return to the market. This is also true for the vendor company. But in the US case, the value is gone. it is like you burned the cash.

Moral of the story: stupidity is more dangerous than corruption. You may want to have a corrupt offical than a stupid one.

Finally, that stupid would never have survived in the relatively corrupt but wild political system of my country.

i think you did the right thing to go public. As an employer i would have no problem with this.

But you shouldn't haven gone into details about their non-existent back-up strategy. This clearly shows their incompetance. This may fear future employers.
