lumberjack··on What can I do about climate change?
If people were not so stuck up on individual action, that would be some progress towards solving climate change. One of the big obstacles is admitting that we need collective action to solve this worldwide problem.

Would ee propose individual action when less dangerous situations occur in society? Say, a bank run is imminent. Does individual action work? Does the government broadcast it on the 8 o'clock news and do the people stay at home or do they run down the bank nonetheless? We do not propose individual action on other matters but we expect individual action to work on climate change.

lumberjack··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
You can get a full blown Reverse Osmosis system. But it does deplete the water of all minerals.
lumberjack··on An AI Lie Detector Is Going to Start Questioning Travelers in the EU
Maybe it will be used to justify probable cause. Maybe they pick the people they want to search using other means (digital surveillance) and then create a probably cause using this fake machine.
lumberjack··on Americans lose confidence they can sniff out social media bots
Why are they calling them "bots"? Is it because they themselves censored the usage of the term "shill", when they were themselves the ones shilling?
lumberjack··on A new course to teach people about fairness in machine learning
>The attack on human bias is totally silly.

Ugly short men in a corporate environments have to swim against the tide because everyone instinctively thinks less of them. Tall handsome men get automatic adoration. Prejudice is irrational and harmful. Bill Gates and Bezos are too short to be CEOs. The world is filled with irrational biases that do more harm than good.

lumberjack··on How Manhattan Became a Rich Ghost Town
This is exactly what happens to the historic centres of some European cities. But the life of the city just moves to the outskirts for the most part.
lumberjack··on Climate change and the 75% problem
Being "green" is not enough. You also have to be a conscious consumer of electricity. If 40% of the online green electricity is going to heating and lighting the empty houses of the rich, that is still not good. Excessive consumerism is still bad even if the entire process uses entirely green energy.
lumberjack··on Pro-privacy search engine DuckDuckGo hits 30M daily searches, up 50% in a year
I think people in tech underestimate how much normal people care. Maybe it is because tech people mix with the sort of tech-crazed consumerist who is more likely than most to swallow the kool-aid and disregard privacy concerns. In my personal life I have been surprised many times by how privacy conscious normal people are.
lumberjack··on EU drops rule that would prevent self-driving car data from being copyrighted
They are the centre-right coalition of all centre-right political parties in Europe. It is beyond laughable levels how they corrupt they are. You can predict their stance 100% of the time by assuming it is the business friendly position.
lumberjack··on Physics Nobel won by laser wizardry – laureates include first woman in 55 years
This is exactly the problem. You think in terms of "balancing a seesaw", but there is no reason to believe that in the complete absence of discrimination, the gender ratio will be 50:50.
lumberjack··on So is it nature not nurture after all?
When people try to be positive by saying: "it's not all natural talent, you must also work hard and persevere!", I wonder, aren't those also shaped by our genes? Is the ability to work hard and the mental fortitude not to give up not also something dictated by our genetics?
lumberjack··on China's largest electric scooter maker Niu files for $150M IPO in the US
Why so much hype over electric scooters? Western people did no adopt gas scooters. Electric scooters are not that different and if anything slightly inferior.
lumberjack··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
Users cannot "just quit". Facebook probably has a profile for my grandma who never touched a PC in her whole life.
lumberjack··on Europe Finally Has an Excuse to Challenge the Dollar
How ironic that you do not even realise how entitled you are to make such a remark. The EU is regulating its own markets. The US is trying to stop the EU from trading with Iran.
lumberjack··on The secret life of teen scooter outlaws
Because these scooters do not have infrastructure designed for them, they might as well be more dangerous than cars, both for the rider and third parties.

For example, in the Netherlands, this is indeed the case, and in the Netherlands there are bicycle paths, although I am not sure if that helps or increases the amount of accidents or their severity.

Data: https://www.swov.nl/en/facts-figures/factsheet/road-deaths-n...

What is the risk of a fatal crash in Dutch traffic for different modes of transport?

lumberjack··on New “Terrorist Content” Regulations: A Grim Day for Digital Rights in Europe
The hard task is not to evade censorship. That is easy. That was always easy. You could always invent some creative method to pass information along. The hard part is to mass disseminate your information. The internet was promising in this regard but as coldtea points out, we ended up with a couple of platforms who control the whole narrative.

That is to say, we have achieved decentralised internet so to speak, and we have the web which is a means to broadcast information, but we do not yet have the decentralised web.

lumberjack··on Loneliness is a serious public-health problem
I am well aware of that. I think a sort of secular replacement for Christianity is needed. Liberalism seems to have just done away with it and left nothing to replace it. It had its problems but it also served some good purposes. This is one of them.
lumberjack··on Loneliness is a serious public-health problem
I imagine the solution to be some sort of Boy Scouts for Adults. It would be different from a MeetUp Group in that there would be some minor level of commitment which is important to keep people attending when they need it most: when they are feeling a bit down; and there would be a regular meeting schedule. If I were not traveling I would seriously look into setting something like this up.
lumberjack··on EU to move ahead with cultural quotas for streaming services
Maybe that's the intended effect, reducing American cultural influence.
lumberjack··on Source for theguardian.com
This is also my issue with TheGuardian. Their reporting on internal issues in foreign countries is lacking in impartiality. It is not clear to me whether this is intentional or whether it is just that they put trust in the wrong foreign sources. I suspect the latter. Nonetheless they end up publishing some really ignorant and biased pieces about counties that Britons have no clue about, and thus cannot hold the paper accountable for.
lumberjack··on Ask HN: How to organize personal knowledge?
I have this problem, except in my case most of my documents are LaTeX. Tried Gitit but didn't like stick with it because only a tiny bit of MathTeX is supported and categorizing has to be done manually and you can easily end up losing pages that you forget to link to others.
lumberjack··on Ask HN: How can I avoid just making rich people richer?
Work for the public sector. There are loads of departments whose cause is unambiguously beneficial to society at large.
lumberjack··on Who needs democracy when you have data?
Trump and BREXIT: the blame is put entirely on the electorate, but in both cases it was the elites who gave the electorate the opportunity to make a choice and it was the elites who provided the selection of possible choices.

Think of the many contemporary political issues on which the elites refuse to provide such a choice and insist on governing as they please.

This is the same as when the media (the voice of the same elites) blame lack of political progress (on for example climate change) on certain demographics of poor people. As if the elites care about what these poor people think. Since when did the elites lend an ear to these people to consult on policy?

They blame it on democracy when it is anything but.

lumberjack··on Endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure in US: disease burden and cost analysis
Monsanto teamed up with Bayer to gain influence within the EU. Monsanto was having trouble bribing EU officials. Bayer already have them in their pockets. Might not be good for PR, but Monsanto was terrified because the EU almost banned Glyphosate last year. Bayer itself does not have a good PR image either.
lumberjack··on “Common view” that Japanese are typically collectivists is not supported by data
Sci-hub the title: http://sci-hub.tw/10.1111/ajsp.12334
lumberjack··on New York Times Co. Reports $24M Profit, Thanks to Digital Subscribers
Being a liberal (the philosophy) is equivalent to being neutral and objective according to all the mainstream media, which are all liberals.
lumberjack··on The world is losing the war against climate change
Climate change is one of those crux problems that necessitate the formation of a new political ideologies. Liberalism is inept to deal with it. Individual action is not enough. The current politicians will not do anything. But liberalism is not going to last forever nor is the current political climate, eternal.
lumberjack··on 3M Knew About the Dangers of PFOA and PFOS Decades Ago, Internal Documents Show
One big one is air pollution. It is huge in terms of health affects on the population but we ignore it because of the feeling that it cannot be helped. When we finally clean our air it is going to seem ridiculous that we accepted our faith to live our whole lives in toxic fumes for two whole centuries.
lumberjack··on Teens Debate Big Issues on Instagram Flop Accounts
Isn't this already what supposedly happens on reddit? And it proves very easy to game: a handful of cooperating accounts can change the narrative very easily, irrespective of the facts.
lumberjack··on Facebook finally hands over leave campaign Brexit ads
Targeted political advertisement is immoral. It is nothing more than a way to deceive the electorate by hiding from them part of the truth. That is the problem here. Online ads are targeted and that is problematic when it comes to politics.
