lud_lite··on Ask HN: What Is a Skill You're Glad You Learnt Outside of Work?
Writing. As in paid to do it, with briefs, deadlines and editors. From this comment I probably look like a crap writer! I do need to focus alot to write well.

I don't use AI except for checking for basic mistakes. I may start using AI for research but I refuse to use it for generating a word of content.

I am thinking of writing a book. I have a rough idea of my rate 100 words per hour (including edits, research) so a 50k word book would take 500 hours or about a year of consistent grind. I'd probably blog the book content allowing for a win even if I abort early.

lud_lite··on 'Don't deport us over health issue,' say couple
Yeah get your PR and citizenship to your desired country ASAP (wouldn't help in this case as they did anyway). Generally the world gets less friendlier to migration over time. Be it little things like more tests, costs and waits or big things like booting people out without due process.
lud_lite··on HTTP Feeds: a minimal specification for polling events over HTTP
What happens if you need to catch up? You keep calling in a loop with a new lastEventId?

What is the intention there though. Is this for social media type feeds, or is this meant for synchronising data (at the extreme for DB replication for example!).

What if anything is expected of the producer in terms of how long to store events?

> 4 9s of accuracy predicting click-through rates

Having a hard time parsing what that means.

Lets say the CTR for 1000000 impressions of an add is 24.5898% and the ML predicts 25.1926%. How many 9s of accuracy is that?

lud_lite··on Backblaze: Mounting Losses, Lawsuits, Sham Accounting, Insider Selling
It is expensive. If we do a monthly test restore like someone suggested then 1TB costs $6000/y. No restores is $3000/y. s3 regular is 10% of that.
lud_lite··on Backblaze: Mounting Losses, Lawsuits, Sham Accounting, Insider Selling
It's one of two backups. The software is great. Dropbox level of just works. iDrive by comparison is cheaper but always errors and files it couldn't touch.
lud_lite··on Backblaze: Mounting Losses, Lawsuits, Sham Accounting, Insider Selling
Thanks! I suspect that for my use case (actual backup no meed for cloud access) s3 glacier is statistically cheaper.
lud_lite··on Backblaze: Mounting Losses, Lawsuits, Sham Accounting, Insider Selling
As a customer do I need to worry? It is my favourite cheapo backup.
lud_lite··on Mark Zuckerberg personally lost the Facebook antitrust case
Technology ironically. The stuff Peter talks about where Y=0. The covid vaccine inventors for example.

Other Y=0 things are people giving their lives for the greater good and basic rights. Geneva convention. Rights for black people, rights for women.

Infact the world runs on Y=0 stuff.

lud_lite··on Avoiding skill atrophy in the age of AI
I disagree with the take on UBI. With UBI more people can then pursue a career that is fulfilling for them. Rather than choices of shit jobs to make ends meet.
lud_lite··on Avoiding skill atrophy in the age of AI
By the way, reading maps is easy. Reading a map and memorising all the landmarks and turns so you can then drive without looking at the map is the hard bit. IMO.
lud_lite··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
Discord is searchable
lud_lite··on Gas: Get Action Status A GitHub Actions checker script
Useful! I mostly use Bitbucket and Atlassian has a decent VSCode plugin to check on PRs and Jobs, I assume similar exists for Github.
lud_lite··on Curry: A functional logic programming language
Lovelace would be a great language name someone should use it.
lud_lite··on Ask HN: My CEO wants to go hard on AI. What do I do?
Put sparkles on the close account button!
lud_lite··on Ask HN: My CEO wants to go hard on AI. What do I do?
But then the customers wont press those buttons anymore.
lud_lite··on Ask HN: Share your AI prompt that stumps every model
Nice and this page gets scraped for the next LLM generation!
lud_lite··on The 5 Kinds of People Who Will Survive AI
These are the people who will survive (AI or Otherwise!).

I would also add:

The rich. If you invested well and sit on 10M+ you are probably OK as long as you keep investing well.

The very talented (and recognized) e.g. anything from sports starts to pop stars.

Many "real world" jobs like police, fire, nurses, etc.

Anything where being human is a part of what is for sale. Tour guides, theatre, mixologists, hairdressers.

lud_lite··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
Just give everyone anti depressants!
lud_lite··on Ask HN: I am at a loss. What shall I do?
This sounds like sage advice! Instead of paying for ads, pay for yourself to cold call. The investors still get value.

Also don't travel anymore and the workshops are not mandatory unless it is in some kind of contract. Even then negotiate to get that changed as it increases runway. They can record the workshop for you too if needed.

If you do everything remotely you could move to lower COL area.

lud_lite··on I built a free open-source website that turned my 15 PTO days into 53 days off
Well I just used 7 days leave to get 16 days continuous time off so I'm with ya! Like the idea of optimising it.

Of course doing the full 15->53 you suggest means you are counting weekends alot in this, which you get anyway. You can turn zero days off into 104 days off using that logic.

lud_lite··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
Not to a public feed but certainly to a friends feed. Are there 10 things worth saying a day?
lud_lite··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
It is easy when you are forced to do it. It's also hard to wear a face mask all day and stay indoors.
lud_lite··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
They can move to Discord, Whatsapp (huh!), Signal, Reddit or some sailor forum.

If FB disappeared they could reroute.

Bigger things are disappearing and we are going to be fine*. E.g. much world trade with the US.

lud_lite··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
They probably could. If all your friends and family posted 10 times a day. But people prefer to consume I guess.
lud_lite··on One quantum transition makes light at 21 cm
But everyone's hand is precisely 21cm long, of course
lud_lite··on One quantum transition makes light at 21 cm
Precisely 21cm or a precise amount that is approximately 21cm?
lud_lite··on On loyalty to Your Employer
The travel things you describe to me are work (in a good way) getting away from it all can give you the clarity to know what big moves to make. I recently went to Tokyo and didn't touch work at all. The only way!

For those who can't afford that like the sister comment you can explore your own city (or suburbia or countryside). Everywhere is exotic to someone. In all 3 cases a bicycle does a good job!

lud_lite··on The hidden cost of AI coding
I think you are right with the building analogy. Most stuff built in the last 25 years is crap quality! But importantly looks nice. Needs to look nice at first.
lud_lite··on Careless People
Don't mess with a Kiwi I guess :)

That said FB sounds evil not careless.
