All the projects seems like commissioned work.
I haven't understand the point of this, beyond the "it's fun to see the tate gallery at night".
(Warning: Experimental stuff)
Case anyone's interested, here's my bandcamp: http://lucasnemeth.bandcamp.com/
The problem is that problem solving with fancy algorithm's can even be part of the job, but are normally just a small fraction. I've never seem dumb people going incredibly well in technical interviews, that's true, but I've seem a lot of bad programmers giving great answers to those abstract problems. And sometimes, they're knowledge wasn't actually a fit.
I believe it will likely kill decent and valid discussions. HN already is a little disconnected from reality sometimes, with this we will end up with a fake consensus. Besides, it will become harder to attain 1000+ karma, so we will be endorsing a small group of people of old users and will be unwelcoming for new folks.
I don't think that using Github as a portfolio is necessarily bad, I don't think it should be the only requisite for a job, but I like the ideia. The problem is, that wasn't the original intention of Github, and today it's profile page reinforce the wrong things.
I think he just tried to show that by hacking his own profile, but it could trick some people if he didn't had explained.
The younger generation do care about problems that lies beneath the application, but a lot of those problems deal more with software than with hardware these days.
Besides that, we've been moving to a open source infrastructure, where a larger number of companies that depends on softwares develop them in a collaborative way, we have moved from the proprietary paradigm that existed in the 90's. A simple texting app may depend on some innovative database to scale, and will contribute to it's development.
You see... It would be great if people had better history/sociology knowledge, I don't know about you, but I don't want to live in a technocratic dystopia. The fact that these fields are seem as "useless" is a terrible thing.
