loydb··on Phrack Magazine (1985-2016)
Randy and Craig (Taran King and Knight Lightning) did an amazing job with Phrack. It was an honor to write for them, and I almost never see them mentioned when people talk about the zine. The zine, and the St. Louis Summercons, were hugely influential. I'm still friends with a bunch of folks from that scene.

If it weren't for a timely late night phone call from Craig needing some more content for an issue, the Conscience of a Hacker would probably not have been written.

loydb··on “God Mode” exploit found in old x86 chips
And you know there are a bunch of intelligence agencies around the world that are either cussing this guy out, or furiously downloading example code (or both).
loydb··on “God Mode” exploit found in old x86 chips
This potentially impacts a ton of infrastructure machines that will be very difficult to patch.
loydb··on Ask HN: As a team lead how to handle project going off the rails?
I'm firmly in the 'raise the issue with your boss immediately, and let him own the fire alarm decision' camp.
loydb··on Ask HN: Best practice for estimating development tasks?
I hate to say it, but the best way to learn to estimate dev time is to do a ton of dev work and learn by bitter experience.
loydb··on The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons and Dragons
(Also, if I'm being pedantic, Sundevil had nothing to do with the the raid either. Sundevil was run by an idiot in Arizona. All of the Legion of Doom-related raids were run by an idiot in Chicago.)
loydb··on The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons and Dragons
Thanks! I was mostly happy with how it came out -- having to rewrite about a third of it because of seized backups was traumatic at the time.
loydb··on The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons and Dragons
Cyberpunk didn't kick off the raid -- that happened because of the BBS I ran, the Phoenix Project. The book was merely a casualty of the war.
loydb··on Apple fires employee after daughter's iPhone X video goes viral
Based on everything I know from my Apple employee friends, no -- this is what happens when you break the wall of silence. I feel bad for him, it sucks to lose a job, but he should have known better.
loydb··on The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons and Dragons
My campaign started in 1978. We're still playing. Over 60 players have come and gone, but the current crew has a half-dozen of the original players from the 70s and early 80s still going. We've outlasted at least 6 marriages, lots of moving (I currently Skype in, but will be moving back home next year), and all manner of turmoil. When I've been too busy or burnt out to DM, someone else in the group has stepped up to fill the gap.

It's hard to schedule because of family and work obligations, but we are pretty close to monthly.

loydb··on Railroad Tycoon
My early 20s were heavily Microprose. Silent Service, Red Storm Rising, various flight sims, and Railroad Tycoon consumed huge blocks of time. This article was a great look back.
loydb··on Confessions of a Watch Geek
I love that Nomos was featured heavily. I don't own one yet, but they are for sure my favorite manufacturer.
loydb··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
For a really deep dive (albeit an overly-scholastic one) into this topic, check out _Those Who Work, Those Who Don't: Poverty, Morality, and Family in Rural America_ by Jennifer Sherman. It's a fascinating book (and makes me happy not to have been a logger).
loydb··on I Had My Electronics Seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection
We're heading to Italy in the Spring (from the US). I'll buy a cheap chromebook the week we leave, never use anything but incognito mode, and we'll rent phones in Italy once we're there.
loydb··on Self-Driving Cars Must Meet 15 Benchmarks in U.S. Guidance
No problem, they'll just unload .45 rounds into the vehicle until they hit something that makes it stop.
loydb··on Ask HN: What does an electrical engineer actually do at work?
This video is an amazing time lapse of the creation of a Eurorack synth module. It shows you what you'll spend a lot of time doing in a smaller org (smaller, as in, you do everything...). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pawXfoTg1k
loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
^This.

I broke into my first mainframe in 1977 because I had to if I wanted to play Colossal Cave Adventure. :)

I learned to blue box because I had to if I wanted to talk to my friends around the world and couldn't afford the phone bill.

I tell people now that if you want to pen test, cool, grab some VMs and go nuts. You might even get a bug bounty or two...

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is definitely my favorite. I don't think Fear no Evil was that bad -- I think it was the last decent book he wrote.

I remember reading the serialization of the first few chapters of Number of the Beast in Omni magazine, and thinking how great it was. Then I got the book and read the rest, and was sad.

Don't get me started on _Friday_.

loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
That one's a little more recent. Agony was our Everquest (and later WoW) guild. We raided together for over a decade. The core of the membership was silicon valley based, and since I travel there a lot, I ended up making many IRL friends that I still hang out with to this day from it.

No, I don't MMO any more.

loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
You would not believe how many emails I got right after the movie came out from teenage boys wanting me to put them in touch with Jolie...
loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
We found out that the SS was filming through hotel mirrors in a couple of rooms during Summercon 88. Poor Knight Lightning had to watch hours and hours of nothing but drunken shenanigans (because nobody trusted the dude who showed up out of nowhere claiming his handle was the "Dictator", so basically we trashed his room. I left a blender in there, the only thing I did in that room was mix batches of Margaritas.)

When we had an LOD meetup in Dallas in 1989 or 1990, we changed hotels at the very last minute to avoid a similar situation...

loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
It is "board". If someone changed it to "bored", they were wrong.

I was about to jump on an airplane, and didn't really have time for a nuanced response. The OP comment is, likely, from someone who has no idea what hacker culture was like in the 1970s and early 1980s, so I can see how he doesn't find it very relevant to his life today.

And he's absolutely right that it was angsty venting (I was 19, so I'll even allow adolescent). That doesn't mean that it didn't resonate with multiple generations of hackers in the 30 years since.

loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
Pleased, because I think I'm the answer to the trivia question "What was the first email address to ever appear in a major movie credit roll". Sad, because, damn, is that a bad movie.
loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
Story of my life.
loydb··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
To be fair, I was pretty damn angsty at the time :)

Always exciting to see this pop up someplace new. It's being translated into Polish for a textbook this year as well.

loydb··on Dwarf Fortress Development
Once a year or so, I pick up DF and play for a few weeks just to see what has changed. Coincidentally, I just finished my 2016 playfest last month.

I am sold on the ASCII graphics, especially once you drop in a decent replacement set. Generating unique icons for all the bazillion different things would be a huge undertaking graphically, and you pick up what things are quickly.

Sadly, the UI (and I use the term loosely) is still, well, awful. The menu system makes no sense (sure, you can memorize where something is, but that's not what I mean), and the keystrokes seem to be randomized across menus. As others have said, there's actually a pretty good game under there these days. It's just horrible to interact with.
