lowlevel··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?
My recollection is no one could figure out what it was or how it worked... and yes, no one to figure it out with.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Why is iOS 11 such a mess?
I feel about the same... they're usually on top of chip design, power efficiency/etc, but quality of the software lately seems really questionable. They have been getting too aggressive with pointless stuff and losing sight of the basics.
lowlevel··on Show HN: Codekeeper – Source Code Escrow for Developers
Maybe I’m just a dummy but you should probably explain source code escrow as the first topic in your faq. I think I know what it entails but Im making a lot of assumptions...
lowlevel··on How Should Business Schools Prepare Students for Startups?
Make them work excessively hard for no reward and leave them worse off when they ex... oh.
lowlevel··on Emacs is sexy
No it isn't.
lowlevel··on How SSH got port number 22
I had always just assumed 22 was picked because it was next to telnet/23. Seems like an obvious choice anyway... I guess it being just a single query to the IANA and a single response to make it official is surprising.
lowlevel··on What programming languages are used late at night?
They've given the answer to 'Which programming languages are used late at night by people coming to StackOverflow for help.' Interesting I guess, but flawed from the start.
lowlevel··on The History of Computer RPGs
I also found this fascinating. I never really saw CRPG being used as an acronym however I have always and always will specify "computer based role playing game" where appropriate vs cerebral role playing games involving books, cards or thoughts/conversations.

There are some errors in the text here and there but hopefully we can all nit pick it to death before the hard cover version goes to print.

lowlevel··on Ask HN: Anybody who left IT?
Sorry about your luck bud... I'm feeling about the same... coming up on 20 years of borderline abuse/burn out.
lowlevel··on HPE to buy Nimble Storage for $1.09B
HP needs to stop buying things.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Who productively writes code on their smartphone? How?
Cathode, ssh, vi.
lowlevel··on Nikola Motor Company
I'm 100% sure this is a complete scam. I'm also sure the person behind it is fairly young and inexperienced in the art of ripping people off.
lowlevel··on iPhone SE
I have no reason to suspect this isn't the case, but does anyone know if the iPhone SE has the same glass as the 6s?
lowlevel··on Usborne 1980s computer programming books for kids become free downloads
Oh wow! I remember borrowing these from the library when I was a kid! Awesome!
lowlevel··on Why does the the human mind ignore the second "the"?
I feel this has something to do with with the way the brain processes the images from both eyes filtering out overlap/differing perspective from each eye to make a single image. The second the seems to be more noticable to me if I close one eye... Of course now that I know its there that is probably skewing the results...
lowlevel··on OneDrive Changes
Sounds like a death knell to me... Certainly not interested now. I can see cracking down on abuse, but changing the deal for everyone involved is probably the wrong move.
lowlevel··on Helping my students overcome command-line bullshittery (2014)
I have trouble taking this complaint seriously. If the platform's interface paradigm is such a hinderance just sheild them from it as much as possible by providing pre-configured environments or use a different platform. There is tremendous value in knowing how the command line work, how the systems work and how they are configured whether you are talking about Unix, Windows, AS/400 or whatever. If you skip this, you are likely to be eaten by a grue.
lowlevel··on New Pacman for Atari 2600
This is mind blowing... I'de say about 7 million people who purchased Pac Man for the Atari 2600 were ripped off. (Myself included.)
lowlevel··on Introducing Google Cast for audio
A full 10 years after AirTunes. Yay.
lowlevel··on Google is shutting down OpenID 2.0
Just wait until they shut down gmail.
lowlevel··on Wire – Modern Communications Network
No video and no win32/64. Skype wins by default.
lowlevel··on Bringing SSD Performance to the DIMM form factor
Mind blown.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Which laptop brands are worth shortlisting for Windows work/development?
I've been buying HP's higher end notebooks for a number of years now. There have been some build quality issues, mostly cosmetic.. but they are repaired promptly and correctly, and turn out to be fairly reliable machines at least for the first 3 years of use. (EliteBook, Zbook)
lowlevel··on Show HN: Keyboards Club
Ahmetsulek... the website link for TextExpander goes to the wrong website... and there is no way to contact you on the site. Awesome.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: My app is being bullied on Google webstore, What to do?
There are going to be a few dicks at every party. You can't really avoid that out here...
lowlevel··on Fish vs. Fish in Street Fighter II
This is best thing I've seen all year.
lowlevel··on Word Perhect
I can only seem to scribble out one character and not entire words. Useless.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Is it possible to have forum type community running without a database?
You could build it on text files, but it's still a database... so I think the answer is a pretty clear no.
lowlevel··on Kindle Unlimited
We're sorry. Kindle Unlimited is currently only available for US customers. Please visit us again when it is available in your country. (figured)
lowlevel··on Expect – A tool for automating interactive applications
Yeah, me too. I don't think I've needed anything like this since... I don't understand why it's news all of a sudden.
