lowkeyokay··on The economics of all-you-can-eat buffets
They might not have enough money to just put it in index funds and live off the dividends. So they have to work, and the business pays their wages
lowkeyokay··on How is search so bad? A case study
The ‘Google is an advertising company’ is said often on HN. I agree to some extent but, doesn’t that imply that every newspaper company is also just an advertising company? Google solves a real problem and this works well, for them, with an advertising based revenue model. Do they compromise their search to that end? Probably. Do newspapers? Hopefully not, but maybe. To me, that doesn’t make them advertising companies. Apologies if this is pedantic.
lowkeyokay··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
You definitely have a way with words.
lowkeyokay··on Tech industry layoffs rose 351 percent in 2019. Is a recession looming?
While I agree layoffs don’t equate recession they are often a precursor. Of course hirings should be considered too. Layoffs > hirings is almost always a bad sign for the economy.
lowkeyokay··on Ask HN: First time working from home; what to do or not do?
Do not check HN
lowkeyokay··on Twitter to decentralize something
PiedPiper solved this
lowkeyokay··on I ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
I have never experienced it being slow. Been using it for at least two years
lowkeyokay··on Ionic React
My company’s main app is built with ionic. Started with v 1.x and is now on 4.11. I love it but, our app was mostly aimed at mobile. It has since become much more desktop focused and we often have to create our own components. (Which is really easy using Stenciljs, also from ionic). Here’s some things you’ll need to work out:

Datepickers. The ones provided by ionic are strictly for mobile. I think they are planning to do a desktop version but I have waited 4 years for that.

IE 11 support. Forget it. Luckily it is less and less important but if you need I wouldn’t bother.

Desktop style menus and lists. Possible to create but is not included.

Ionic are improving dekstop features but it still mostly aimed at mobile. If possible, try creating one of the most desktop centric parts of your app and see how far you get. If mobile use is not important at all you might not get many benefits from using ionic.

lowkeyokay··on Are We Living in a Computer Simulation? Let’s Not Find Out
I think of it this way: We are already running simulations of the universe with very simple models. Imagine 1000 years from now what type of models we could be using. Perhaps models where every known law of physics is precisely modeled. Then let it run from Big Bang and fast forward 14 billion years. Maybe the simulation would create some lifeforms. Even if that was not the intention.

If that's not too far a stretch then maybe some civilization exists where their top notch model will create the world we experience. Maybe they don't care or aren't aware that the simulation simulate life. Maybe they just care about how the universe evolves, and we are a biproduct of that.

lowkeyokay··on The SaaS Opportunity of Unbundling Excel
I don’t think Excel is ever bashed for its primary use case. It’s when someone starts building complex, multi user applications things start to go wrong. It almost always becomes an entangled mess. And good luck to anyone taking over when the creator leaves. I’ve been both the creator and maintainer of such Excel applications, and I do not miss it.
lowkeyokay··on Password expiration is dead, long live passwords
But Slack then must rely on the security of your email. If the site is dealing with sensitive information like credit cards, this could be a no go.
lowkeyokay··on Web Components could replace frontend frameworks?
It can be a performance boost because it only updates the part of the DOM tree that has changed. Not completely unlike React’s virtual DOM
lowkeyokay··on Rudder issue that plagued the Boeing 737 throughout the 1990s
And is probably a reference to the Pinto Memo - a cost-benefit analysis performed by Ford in 1973 [0]

lowkeyokay··on Four-day week trial: study finds lower stress but no cut in output
Exactly! I think of this every time this subject comes up and I always come to think of the scene from Something About Mary [1]

[1] https://youtu.be/rnso4nfdM9w

I also think the productivity gain or lack of loss comes from excitement and a feeling of responsibility for having the extra day off. It's mentioned in the article

>“The biggest concern from an employer point of view is ensuring that the full-time introduction of the policy doesn’t lead to complacency, with the risk that people’s productivity will slip back,” Barker said.

“To guard against this happening we’ve spent a lot of time making sure every person in every team has their own plan as to how they’re going to maintain and even improve their productivity.”

I think this makes sense but, as time passes and 4 days becomes the norm the feeling of excitement and responsibility will fall and output will follow. If everyone has a 4 day work week we will probably be as lazy as we are now in our 5 days.

lowkeyokay··on Why Captchas have gotten so difficult
Well google’s traffic CAPTCHA’s main purpose is to label a huge data set for Waze. At least it must be a huge beneficial (to google) side effect. Am I wrong?
lowkeyokay··on Ask HN: Is web development still a viable career choice?
If you are worried about Upwork's reputation, choose Toptal instead. I have no connection with them other than having worked with freelancers from them a couple of times. They've been great. I have also come to know one of their devs personally, and he had only good things to say. He is now employed full time by a company for whom he used to work for through Toptal.

However, having six months of experience, Toptal might not hire you. As someone already posted, I'd advise you to find a team and gain some experience. Having a deadline, and a customer with very high expectations - perhaps set by your initial promises - is sure path to a very stressful worklife. Don't do it.

lowkeyokay··on Ask HN: What technologies did you learn in 2018?
Been using Ionic for 4 years. I think v4 with just TSX + Redux has been really good. I’ve good things about Angular 6 but TSX is just much more intuitive to me.
lowkeyokay··on Microsoft Edge and open source collaboration
I have seen this many times during development. Noteworthy sites that cause problems are, well, Microsoft sites: portal.azure.com - problems downloading publish profiles. SharePoint - too many to mention
lowkeyokay··on Apple now strives to design and build products that last as long as possible
From my experience iOS runs quite decently on 5S and on 6, my current phone.
lowkeyokay··on B.S. In Artificial Intelligence – Curriculum
Definitely misread that title...
lowkeyokay··on Apple becomes the first $1T company
That’s debatable. There are a number of ways to calculate GDP. One is the sum of value added, as in the value of the end product minus the value of input. Another is the total sum of income from labor and assets. Since it includes time spent it is not really net profit but it’s not turnover either. It’s some hybrid but, I would say it is closer to net profit.
lowkeyokay··on LIDL cancels SAP introduction after spending 500M Euro
I think it has to with peoples inherent lack of discounting sunk costs. “We have already spent X amount. We must make sure it isn’t wasted, so let’s spend Y more and see if that’ll fix it”. At least they pulled the plug.
lowkeyokay··on Goldman Sachs model to predict World Cup game results didn’t come close
If anything, this is a clear illustration of poor use of probabilistic prediction. When used for investments you have many outcomes. If the model is any good, you will most of them right. In the World Cup you have very few. Even if you count all games played. Definitely not excusing Goldman Sachs here, they should have known better than to try to predict this. There was only a tiny chance this could be great advertisement for their model.
lowkeyokay··on The Hidden Cost of Touchscreens
I still miss a physical button on my phone to take a picture. Haven’t had it since my Nokia Windows Phone.
lowkeyokay··on There was a time when search engines were a thing, and it seems they still are
I think that’s pretty far fetched. Such a spike would most likely be the product of an already very well known rumour.
lowkeyokay··on The 640K memory limit of MS-DOS
Those were the days...I remember getting a brand new game, loading it and getting "You need at least 587 KiB of conventional memory to run this game". Check the autoexec.bat and config.sys for anything I didn't need. Do I really need to use the mouse? No. Remove the mouse.com. CTRL-ALT-DELETE. Became very familiar with that combo. Type MEM. Still only 577 KiB..What else?

LOADHIGH and DEVICEHIGH - Now we're in business! 595 KiB - Awesome!

Oh no. My dad's coming home and he won't allow me to mess with the config files. What did I change...

Then I learned about boot disks. And with DOS4/GW all problems were gone.

Never knew the technical reasons for the limitations but this article brought back a lot of memories.

lowkeyokay··on GitHub Is Microsoft’s $7.5B Undo Button
What I’m missing from GitHub is an easy way to search for repositories by subject. Say you need to create a user admin front end you should be able to find that easily. I always end up using Google or DDG instead. Maybe MS can fix that. (insert Bing joke here.)
