lowdest··on Chloroquine phosphate has shown apparent efficacy in treating Covid-19
More gin and tonic == less coronavirus. Got it. That's some specious logic I can get behind.
lowdest··on WHO says it no longer uses 'pandemic' category, but virus still emergency
I've got friends in Wuhan, one is a nurse. I talk to them on FaceTime and WeChat. Does not seem overhyped to me. It's obviously not doomsday but it's not going to disappear silently either.
lowdest··on AI thinks like a corporation (2018)
>They would go out of business in the first place paying for storage costs alone - let alone the access of everyone else to counter the rogue self-replicating.

These things reduce the total number of paperclips produced, and therefore would be accounted for by such an AI. The Universal Paperclips [https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html] game has a pretty good take on it.

lowdest··on Efforts to change the Japanese culture of extreme work weeks
15 is three whole weeks, not so bad. At some point my brainwashing was complete, now I'm on a race to accumulate maximum wealth before retirement. I spend a lot of my days off doing things that will increase earnings.
lowdest··on Ask HN: True Apartment Costs in SF?
If you'd like to start with a furnished studio in berkeley, I know someone with a vacant unit.
lowdest··on Ask HN: True Apartment Costs in SF?
$3500-4000 for a 1 bedroom is common, (I rent one) but it's also probably in a nice, modern, new-construction building. Mine is 15th floor with a view, so it's more than the bare necessities. Buildings like this have the best marketing budget, so you see them all over the internet. The less developed and less expensive areas will have a longer commute. You could live in the east bay and ride Bart in e.g. at $11 per round trip from Berkeley. Your company may provide a transit benefit so you can spend pre-tax dollars on your commute.
lowdest··on Hiring Is Broken: What Do Developers Say About Technical Interviews?
Current recommendations on discussion boards for job seeking are to complete 300 medium-to-hard Leetcodes in the 60 days before your interview. This is up from 200 1-2 years ago.

If you won't do it there are many others who will.

lowdest··on The Origin of Most Coal on Earth (2016)
Wood engineered to not rot naturally would also have a market, in addition to sequestering carbon.
lowdest··on Retirees Might Run Out of Money 10 Years Before They Die
5% nominal returns, then ~2% inflation and income taxes on withdrawal. That's going to require a high savings rate.
lowdest··on Ask HN: Would you leave your company for a raise of 20%?
Anyone who is surprised at this is either so wealthy they are out of touch or has not felt the creeping dread of an under-funded retirement account.
lowdest··on Dynamic Programming for Technical Interviews
I spent 2-3 weeks going through all DP problems on leetcode after work. I got that Tetris-effect where I was starting to hallucinate/dream DP problems and solutions as I would fall asleep at night.

I did this specifically for interviewing. As I've said before, these kind of interviews screen for unusual geniuses or people with the motivation to spend many hours studying, which are two types of acceptable hires.

lowdest··on Women who refuse to have children until climate change ends
The world is guaranteed to be terrible if educated, moral people slowly die off.
lowdest··on Galaxy Simulations Offer a New Solution to the Fermi Paradox
Isaac Arthur has a whole series of podcasts that cover all the current ideas around the Fermi paradox, which ones are more or less likely and why. Really interesting stuff. Here's a link to his Fermi Paradox playlist on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIIOUpOge0LulClL2dHXh...

He's also got a Soundcloud for audio-only format and a Facebook group.

lowdest··on Jack Dorsey has been buying $10k worth of Bitcoin a week
Right. One solution is to do buy crypto many years in advance, during good economic times. Whenever disaster strikes, it's best to have bought the insurance policy when the threat seems unlikely and far away rather than imminent.

Admittedly, I don't know what could be done with crypto to help the average Venezuelan at this point.

lowdest··on Jack Dorsey has been buying $10k worth of Bitcoin a week
Consider a Venezuela scenario. Inflating currency and limits on currency conversion and transfer to prevent money escaping the border. With crypto your money is already across the border.
lowdest··on The $2M Urinal: Why Hard Work Doesn’t Cut It (2018)
Succinctly, it's the same as telling a joke a second time to the same audience.
lowdest··on Recruit Is Japan’s Top Contender for Global Internet Domination
Recruit owns Indeed and Glassdoor, which are doing pretty well beyond Japan.
lowdest··on Money Machines – An Interview with an Anonymous Algorithmic Trader
Kelly sizing is optimal long term, but is highly volatile. A common practice is to size by a fraction of Kelly, to reduce variance and since risk of ruin increases fast after 1.0 * Kelly. It also allows room for error in the probability predictions, to avoid going over 1.0 * Kelly by accident.

I try not to worry about stdev and focus on the soundness of my process, but in practice I have money split into higher-risk where I try to be clever, and low-risk failsafe investments to raise the floor of the worst case scenario.

lowdest··on Money Machines – An Interview with an Anonymous Algorithmic Trader
I've spent a huge amount of time playing with similar stuff. The goal is to predict anything that you can make money on -- this can be obviously be price, but you can also try volatility, or predicting a probability distribution. Try relaxing constraints to find your signal: price ranges instead of exact prices, date ranges instead of exact dates. If you can output a probability, distribution, or confidence interval as well, that information can be used for position sizing (see Kelly criterion.)

If you start expanding beyond a small set of specific companies, don't forget to find data for delisted companies to avoid survivorship bias.

lowdest··on I interviewed at six top companies in Silicon Valley in six days
As I see it, the difficult algorithm interviews screen for people who are motivated enough to spend 100s of hours studying for an interview, or know this stuff for some other uncommon reason. Both types are acceptable hires.
lowdest··on To Cover China, There’s No Substitute for WeChat
>China’s use of cash rate is still much higher than the USA

Is this regional, or perhaps urban vs rural? On my recent trip, I didn't see anyone using cash. Everyone used their phone. I bought coffee with cash at a Starbucks -- all the cash in their cash register was in a single roll held together with a rubber band. It was used so infrequently that they didn't use the trays or separate the bills.

lowdest··on The blind mind: No sensory visual imagery in aphantasia
I have an unusually vivid imagination I think, but I absolutely see things that I imagine. I can also hear improvised music, voices, almost whatever I want.
lowdest··on Bitcoin Plunges to $3,738; Whole Crypto Scam Melts Down, Hedge Funds Stuck
This is the truth.
lowdest··on Bitcoin Plunges to $3,738; Whole Crypto Scam Melts Down, Hedge Funds Stuck
>literally 20 or more cryptos available on coinbase

False, there are exactly eight.

lowdest··on Bitcoin-Rigging Criminal Probe Focused on Tie to Tether
Yes, the underlying idea has always been sound enough to attract large investment without manipulation. Even if the legal and ethical true price is under $1000, that's still more natural growth than, say, an additional 20x added on by manipulation.
lowdest··on Carbon Removal Technologies
Trees ultimately burn or rot, releasing a large portion of that carbon back into the atmosphere. Cutting them down and burying them to grow more would be ideal, but takes additional work.

Someone want to engineer a tree with enormous, deep roots? Basically make the trees self-burying.

lowdest··on Large home libraries may have a long-term impact on proficiency: study
I was fascinated by D&D rulebooks when I was a kid. The systems captured my imagination as much as the fantasy aspect. Because of that, my vocabulary included excellent words like "melee", "flail", and "barrage" while I was still in the single digits of age.
lowdest··on Ask HN: 40+ Career Advice?
I believe the end of that joke is "they take them out and shoot them."
lowdest··on Privateer Holdings Hits the Jackpot with $12B Tilray Stake
Puts and calls are the two types of options contracts. They are created and trade in a range around the current price. Typically, this range is wide enough that it covers all moves of the underlying stock price. In this case, the price move exceeded what the professionals thought was even possible as a long shot bet.
lowdest··on The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences [pdf]
https://oeis.org/ It's easy to accidentally spend an hour browsing sequences. One of my favorite things on the internet.

If you're ever dealing with a sequence of numbers and wondering if there's an underlying structure, this is a great place to start.
