low_tech_punk··on I genuinely don't understand why some people are still bullish about LLMs
OP highlights application problems, and RAG specifically. But that is not an LLM problem.

Chat is such a “leaky” abstraction for LLMs

I think most people share the same negative experience as they only interact with LLMs through the chat UI by OpenAI and Anthropic. The real magic moment for me was still the autocompletion moment from the gh copilot.

low_tech_punk··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
The problem with en and em dash is that

1) they are too hard to type.

2) using them without surrounding thin space or hairspace breaks the horizontal rhythm and draws unnecessary attention to the punctuation; but thin and hair spaces are equally hard to type

3) Most people write markdown with mono space fonts, making these dashes and spaces indistinguishable.

low_tech_punk··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
Apple needs to admit, a product is either new or improved. It is never new and improved.
low_tech_punk··on Sesame CSM: A Conversational Speech Generation Model
OpenSeasame would be a great project name!
low_tech_punk··on Show HN: I Built a Customer Feedback Tool
I'm curious how the lifetime pricing model work for you as a founder. Are you able to bootstrap this yourself and stay within budget with all the compute and hosting cost?
low_tech_punk··on Mistral OCR
This might be a contrarian take: the improvement against gpt-4o and gemini-1.5 flash, both of which are general purpose multi-modal models, seem to be underwhelming.

I'm sensing another bitter lesson coming, where domain optimized AI will hold a short term advantage but will be outdated quickly as the frontier model advances.

low_tech_punk··on Is software abstraction killing civilization? (2021)
I'm curious too. I want to understand "Figma is destroying the design world on unprecedented scale by normalising bad UX, UI and product management found in Figma itself".
low_tech_punk··on Is software abstraction killing civilization? (2021)
I think this post is related: We are destroying software (https://antirez.com/news/145)

I don't disagree that software engineering is not as rigorous as it was. But software has also spread into much wider area, allowing many more people to participate as programmers, all thanks to abstractions.

I'm drawn to the romantic/pure/spartan aspect of low level programming too but I also need to make a living by solving problems in practical and scrappy ways.

low_tech_punk··on The impact of AI on the technical interview process
I think the issue is that the font used by the author does not support fraction pixel sizing. I changed the body font size from 1.2em (16.8px) to 16px and the issues are gone. I'm curious too as for why it happened. I'm guessing the font was originally designed for Japanese, not Latin. See: https://fontmeme.com/fonts/m-plus-rounded-1c-font/
low_tech_punk··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
I'm actually glad AI use is revealing misalignment:

If the AI is so good at it, why are we still hiring human to do the job? It just shows how the interview process is not measuring the right thing to start with.

low_tech_punk··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
We are approaching a singularity where we actually want to hire the cheating tool, not the cheater.
low_tech_punk··on Show HN: TypeScript/React/Vue Window Layout Manager (Tabs, Floating, Popouts)
Looks like a very high quality library, great work! I wonder if it will eventually support auto truncating tab titles when the tabs fill up the horizontal space, just like how chrome display large number of tabs.
low_tech_punk··on AI means the end of internet search as we've known it

Despite fewer clicks, copyright fights, and sometimes iffy answers, AI could unlock new ways to summon all the world’s knowledge.
Maybe a better title would be AI menas the end of knowledge as we've known it
low_tech_punk··on Why we built Vade Studio in Clojure

Because Clojure treats data as first-class citizens, we could build our own lightweight conflict resolution system using pure functions that operate on these transactions.
What does it mean to say Clojure "treat data a first-class citizen"? I understand FP would treat function as first-class citizen, but the statement seems to mean something different.
low_tech_punk··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
but you might have to change it back to main when the next president shows up.
low_tech_punk··on Show HN: Atlas of Space
The visual design details make it feel like the navigation system of Elite Dangerous! Well done!

A sound effect would be nice. Just an idea.

low_tech_punk··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
UW's slogan is "Be Boundless". This is the polar opposite of that.

UW has missed a great opportunity to show its current and future students and faculty that innovation is valued there. Their management decision will shutdown the minds of so many brilliant hackers, as we have already witnessed with the OP's decision to back down. I really hope the school can re-evaluate their decision and more importantly, the faculty should support the students, as they are together pursuing the goal of learning by doing. That's what higher education should offer, not conditioning people into rule makers and rule followers.

low_tech_punk··on RWKV Language Model
Thanks! The 0.1B version looks perfect for embedded system. What is the key benefit of attention-free architecture?
low_tech_punk··on Zasper: A Modern and Efficient Alternative to JupyterLab, Built in Go
I wish the author considered https://wails.io/ for UI. Why all the effort with Go and ended up with Electron?
low_tech_punk··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
Going off a tangent, I wonder if the market reveals survival bias: companies and products that did respect privacy practice (e.g. by asking explicit permission) were not able to harness enough user data to compete with other bad players, and as a result, any company would eventually end up like Facebook or go out of business.

Sadly privacy is not a marketable feature, or at least it does not have the ROI as Apple originally believed. I feel the only way to level the play field is to reconsider our regulation framework and treat privacy as a fundamental benefit for consumers.

low_tech_punk··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
This is what Meta Portal could have been. It's not about going high tech and fancy UI. It's the human kindness that makes tech beautiful.
low_tech_punk··on Show HN: FTWA – Turn any website into an app
How's this different from chrome browser's PWA install? https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/9658361?sjid=105106...

I believe the PWAs will correctly show up in the OS native app launchers.

low_tech_punk··on Building a single-page app with Htmx
The author swyx is the founder of https://smol.ai/ It's either a typo out of habit, or an intentional reference
low_tech_punk··on Building a single-page app with Htmx
Glad to see you here swyx. I think the issue you outlined is acknowledged by the htmx's authors and addressed in the Morph Swaps documentation: https://htmx.org/docs/#morphing

What is ironic though, is that the morphing algorithms are similar to what modern SPA frameworks do, except that it can be addressed without introducing new concepts such as vdom, zones, signal etc.

I agree that the island architecture is limiting when it comes to large scale application with state shared across multiple areas in the UI. I'd be curious to hear others finding success in building apps.

p.s. I appreciate the smol island :)

low_tech_punk··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
Funny timing. StackBlitz announced Bolt.new (https://bolt.new/) today with multi-file edit, emulated filesystem, arbitrary npm installs, and is open source. I feel ChatGPT is still chasing after Claude 3.5 artifact.
low_tech_punk··on Bolt.new by StackBlitz
System prompt: https://github.com/stackblitz/bolt.new/blob/main/app/lib/.se...
low_tech_punk··on Bolt.new by StackBlitz
This feels like Cursor + v0. From the GitHub project README:

Claude, v0, etc are incredible- but you can't install packages, run backends or edit code. That’s where Bolt.new stands out:

1. Full-Stack in the Browser: Bolt.new integrates cutting-edge AI models with an in-browser development environment powered by StackBlitz’s WebContainers

2. AI with Environment Control: Unlike traditional dev environments where the AI can only assist in code generation, Bolt.new gives AI models complete control over the entire environment including the filesystem, node server, package manager, terminal, and browser console. This empowers AI agents to handle the entire app lifecycle—from creation to deployment.

low_tech_punk··on Bolt.new by StackBlitz

low_tech_punk··on WordPress.org bans WP Engine
Really saddened by the FOSS landscape. Docker, Terraform, Redis, and now Wordpress. Aside from who’s right and who’s wrong, the sheer drama and rug pulls make it feel like the beginning of an end to open source as a viable business model.
low_tech_punk··on Figma Instance Considered Harmful
We can bring another OOP idea: loose coupling, strong cohesion.

Inheritance can be useful when it captures a single shared aspect across multiple designs. It becomes unwieldy when it captures multiple shared aspects where each aspect may need to change independently.
