lovedswain··on Ask HN: Where do you find potential customers to validate your idea / MVP?
> The process of building an MVP includes the process of figuring out distribution.

As blindingly obvious as this is, I've never seen it put quite so concisely. Fantastic. I could've cut short so many bullshit discussions this way

lovedswain··on A new Cloudflare Web Application Firewall
Sorry, you don't get to market to folk who're willing to read the words "Magic Quadrant" and post that shit to HN at the same time. Pick your poison! We're a technical crowd, remember? Shudder. I wonder if the CloudFlare folk will be returning to their offices wearing suits when lockdown is over.
lovedswain··on PHP's Git server compromised, moving to GitHub
Trying to sneak that diff in was a hugely wasted opportunity, it sticks out like a sore thumb. If they were going to commit anything, it should have looked like a legitimate change. Another option might have been to wait until just before a release and fiddle with the tags or the newly opened QA branch (if any).

Check out https://freedom-to-tinker.com/2013/10/09/the-linux-backdoor-... for another attempt, that one at least requires careful review to notice the problem

lovedswain··on The Western Digital WD Black SN850 Review: A Fast PCIe 4.0 SSD
This article is clearly garbage, just from looking at the first graph: https://www.storagereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Sto... .. that DB benchmark is most certainly bottlenecked on something other than IO, the full result range (including the one laggard drive) fits in a 1.6% range

lovedswain··on Migrating Millions of Concurrent WebSockets to Envoy
What has WebRTC got to do with me personally? Please try to speak to the topic, it makes for better reading, and threads much less likely to lead in the wrong direction.

> If you do both STUN and TURN it works on most networks

TURN requires clean outbound UDP/TCP connectivity which is far from ubiquitous, there are numerous corporate firewalls where "CONNECT <x>:443" is the best that could be hoped for, and even in some of those, where if the resulting connection did not include an obvious SSL handshake the connection would be immediately reset.

lovedswain··on Migrating Millions of Concurrent WebSockets to Envoy
It's possible to implement all of this without inheriting the additional infrastructure and networking complexity WebRTC brings along with it, not forgetting WebRTC still relies on centralized components to coordinate. Don't use WebRTC unless you really need the features it offers, routers in many scenarios hate it and even where they allow it, the combinatorial explosion in possible configurations to support and diagnose between peers is a problem nobody should willingly invite unless they can't achieve a solution any other way

With WebRTC you give up the nice ultra-low-common-denominator "outbound port 443/TCP needs to work" requirement and replace it with "UDP networking generally healthy, possible to establish port mappings, possible to maintain stable port mappings over time, possible to not have mappings go away due to lack of traffic" etc etc

lovedswain··on Grumpy Cat NFT sold for nearly $80K
Given the huge amount of free coins floating in the system from the prehistoric days, chances are the guy who created this is also the guy who bought it, or a close friend. That was even already shown to be the case for the massive sale last week -- the purchaser was the owner of an NFT startup.

The entire thing is a scam designed to get time in the news. Never forget what kind of folk you're dealing with in this space: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OneCoin

tl;dr UPS maintenance was performed by a vendor the day before the fire. Fire department used a thermal camera to isolate source of fire, it seemed to originate with 2 UPSes, one of which was the recently maintained UPS

lovedswain··on Fire declared in OVH SBG2 datacentre building
> In the case of Roubaix 4, the Datacenter is made with a lot of wood:

> Finally, we have other photos of the floor of the OVH "Roubaix 4" tower. It is clearly wood! Hope it's fireproof wood! A wooden datacenter ... is still original, we must admit.

> In France, data centers are mainly regulated by the labor code, by ICPE recommendations (with authorization or declaration) and by insurers. At the purely regulatory level, the only things that are required are:

> - Mechanical or natural smoke extraction for blind premises or those covering more than 300m2

> - The fire compartmentalization beyond a certain volume / m2

> - Emergency exits accessible with a certain width

> - Ventilation giving a minimum of fresh air per occupant

> - Access to the firefighter from the facade for the premises are the low floor of the last level is more than 8 meters

> - 1 toilet for 10 people (occupying a position considered "fixed")

lovedswain··on ClickHouse as an alternative to Elasticsearch for log storage and analysis
> you can't simply dump semi-structured data (csv/json/documents) into it and worry about schema (index definition) + querying later

Unless you love rewrites, you can't simply dump semi-structured data into ElasticSearch either. Seen multiple apps with 5x or worse ES storage usage tied to 'data model' or lack thereof, and fixing it inevitably means revisiting every piece of code pushing stuff into and out of ES.

I love ES but this notion of schema free is dumb, in practice it's a nightmare.

lovedswain··on Bitcoin may be optimally positioned to become preferred currency for world trade
Optimally positioned, as most mining happens in China and the only other candidate is the Yuan? :)

I wonder if the Citi analysts knew of the mining farms installed in Iran by Chinese businesses in order to access cheap electricity. If Bitcoin's value is derived solely from narrative, it's going to be great to see how the world reacts to that story finally turning up in the mainstream press.

lovedswain··on Bitfinex and Tether required to end all trading activity with New Yorkers
> If it didn't, there's no particular reason multi-billion dollar

This is true in theory but in practice it seems much more commonly false. Even in vastly more mature and liquid markets, straightforward arbitrages can persist for years and in some cases decades, even after an inefficiency becomes public knowledge

lovedswain··on Bitfinex and Tether required to end all trading activity with New Yorkers
The most damning detail I've seen comes from US treasury TIC reports, which fail to reveal matching bond ownership inflow to the country that is the reputed host of Tether's segregated bank account.

It is possible that Tether holds funds in some kind of strange non-interest-bearing account, but that seems highly unlikely. Another possibility is that the primary bank is actually a wrapper around some overseas correspondent bank where the funds are really held.

Occam's razor: a company selling a 1:1 hedged coin should have absolutely no difficulty whatsoever proving on a daily or hourly basis that all coins are verifiably fully hedged. It should literally be the company's prime directive, and in this particular case, especially following the endless stream of controversy. The fact they haven't managed to convincingly achieve this even once in 7 years is all I need to know.

The whole thing stinks terribly. Good luck for those who invest in it, but I'll be there if/when it blows up to quietly feel smug about it all
