louwrentius··on Lawmakers Introduce Multiple Laws to Curb Flock After 404 Media Coverage
The idea that a for-profit company is allowed to scan licence plates and make this data available and searchable without restrictions seems ludicrous to me.

In The Netherlands, we do have ANPR camera's but they are run by the police and there are strict rules about data retention (no hit on a licence plate means drop the data). ANPR cameras aren't used as dragnet surveillance. The NL situation is not perfect, but it's on a different playing field.

With the absolute unregulated situation in the USA, the outcome has been predictable: cops stalking people and innocent people jailed for weeks due to mistakes.

I love Benn Jordan's work, including the video where they went to a Flock office building, filming employees. They didn't like being filmed, but it did not teach them a lesson unfortunately.

If you (still) work for Flock, don't think of yourself as a moral, decent person.

People should also know that Jeff Geerling is anti-abortion (even after r@pe), anti-contraception and anti-homosexuality. I wouldn’t go if I could and I love homelabs. Your politics matter, especially now.
louwrentius··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Palo Alto by Malcolm Harris - a re-read about the history of Silicon Valley, highly recommended.

That's a very long post to state that you still hold your positions as stated more than 10 years ago.

You are still anti-abortion (even after rape), anti-contraceptives and anti-homosexuality, right?

Disclosure: I wrote that blog post but with sources.

If people are technical brilliant but they hurt people I want nothing to do with them.

My remark was to inform people so they can make up their own mind what to do or support.

At no point did I talk about government intervention or something like that.

Just civilians being informed to make choices they want to make

Frankly, personal politics matter a great deal to me. I can't look away.

I don't support people who advocate for policies that hurt and kill people (mostly women in this case). That cause tremendous suffering.

I can't support such people in any way, even if their personal politics have nothing to do with their work or whatever event they plan.

People can believe and support what they want, but they should not be free of consequences for such beliefs: exclusion and boycots.

louwrentius··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
It's insane to me that the fastest Mac chip is almost a fifth faster than the fastest Intel chip for a fraction of the power budget.

> I pointed Claude Opus 5 at a C codebase I've been working on for years and it immediately found five serious bugs

These 'serious' bugs aren't important if you've been working on this code base for years and only now they pop up. I suspect - although I'm guessing - that probably a hobby project.

Frankly speaking, although this comment is very dismissive about the opinion blog article - assertively stating that this isn't a well-thought-out post - it seems to me that the personal anekdote is irrelevant and that the blog post in question still fully stands.

Nice Work! Take note of the usage of aluminium extrusions, if you're not familiar with them, take a look, they are very handy and not expensive. I've built a 10 inch mini rack with them, really handy.
louwrentius··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
I really wonder why Nvidia would do this.
louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
> But, I am fairly certain for trivial tasks, or bureaucratic tasks AI has lessened my cognitive load (data point of one).

That can't justify the 1+ trillion invested in AI, right?

> Money is the means by which we facilitate exchange. But in reality, the energy in the universe is ginormous. > Is AI bad for the environment or is it the way we obtain energy bad for the environment?

I find this dishonest, we know that it's running on natural gas mostly and it's thus contributing to climate change + harm for communities. There's no way around this.

louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
This isn't how it works. Hundreds of billions are spend on existing NVIDIA AI hardware that must first be recuperated. This kind of speculation doesn't make sense to me.
louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
The 2025 paper showed how people could fool themselves. How easy it seems that you fool yourself.

The 2026 paper admitted it's different and has issues.

> A lot of software projects don't make money directly. Our company makes money.

That's an evasive answer and you know it. It's about AI making an impact on the bottom line, justifying it's cost.

> A lot of software projects don't make money directly. Our company makes money. This would have cost thousands of dollars paid to a contractor previously with unclear results so yes it's 100% justified.

Thousands of dollars is pocket change even for a small company. That's not the kind of impact AI is supposed to have. You see why I'm not convinced? You also don't talk about the unsubsidised cost of AI nor the negative externalities.

louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
1. Does this make money

2. Does this warrant the unsubsidized cost of AI?

3. Does this justify the harmful externalities of AI?

I don't need personal anecdotes. I want evidence that organisations make more money, get more efficient (and so on) due to AI. Please cite a paper.

louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
Where’s your proof? No anecdotes plz.
louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
Taking your anecdotes at face value for a moment (which I should not), how does this benefit of AI you describe justify the nearly 1 trillion dollar investment?

Do you think that your perceived increased productivity offsets the true, unsubsidised cost of AI?

louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
This mostly reads like wishful thinking about the future, that's not a basis to make decisions on right now.
louwrentius··on I think you might be fooling yourself with AI
Thank you.
louwrentius··on Ask HN: Who is quitting? (July 2026)
Quiet quit aka : do the actual amount of work you are are paid for and don't let yourself get ripped off due to 'pressures'.

The chassis is not connected to ground, tbh. Not really.
louwrentius··on The AI Mirage or Why I Think the Hype Can't Sustain Itself
All that output needs to be checked, thus why making mistakes faster doesn't seem valuable. How do we determine mistakes are made in the first place. Is it determined by people?
louwrentius··on The AI Mirage or Why I Think the Hype Can't Sustain Itself
That word 'some' does quite a bit of heavy lifting.

Because there is a ton of work that people tend to perform that falls out the scope of that 'some'. And a lot of work requires alignment with other people, and so on. LLMs don't have agency, despite people hyping 'agents'.

louwrentius··on The AI Mirage or Why I Think the Hype Can't Sustain Itself
LLM by their nature can't really replace people. Companies found this out from experience, as they fired and rehired people multiple times, you've seen the articles.
louwrentius··on The AI Mirage or Why I Think the Hype Can't Sustain Itself
About the - humans aren't accurate either - 'argument'. Why replace people with something objectively worse and more unpredictable?

I haven’t found a solution for a single DC power supply I can connect to the systems. Maybe I have to solder something together myself.
