lotusleaf1987··on IPhone share of phone market: 5% volumes, 20% revenues, 55% profit

lotusleaf1987··on Apple Planning Major Product Launch For Retail 10th Anniversary?
I can tell you right now with 100% certainty that's not even an option.
lotusleaf1987··on Apple Planning Major Product Launch For Retail 10th Anniversary?
I don't really know what the normal level of secret activity is at Apple stores.

Why would Apple release an iConsole and not just add those features to the AppleTV?

lotusleaf1987··on IPhone share of phone market: 5% volumes, 20% revenues, 55% profit
In other words, you probably didn't read the article and would have made this conclusion despite whatever facts were presented.
lotusleaf1987··on Apple Planning Major Product Launch For Retail 10th Anniversary?
It's probably just a Macbook Air refresh. The MBA uses Intel Core 2 Duo and the Core 2 Duo's have been completely discontinued, with only a few being manufactured until the end of Q1 2011:http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2010/2010060901_Intel_to_disco....

Apple will have to move to Sandy Bridge at some point in the next year. Some may argue Apple is special and Intel will continue manufacturing things for them, but they have to move all their fabs to the 32nm process.

Also, the iMac and Macbook Pro were both refreshed recently getting Thunderbolt and the Sandry Bridge line.

lotusleaf1987··on Lodsys explains in-app patent warning letters sent to iOS developers
They have an army of lawyers, I'm sure they could find something.
lotusleaf1987··on Lodsys explains in-app patent warning letters sent to iOS developers
Of course there are loop holes in the the suggestion I made, it wasn't meant to be a cure-all solution, but rather to point out there are many many more pragmatic ways to go about software patents. I agree that the original inventor should be protected to an extent, but the current system is broken and needs reform.
lotusleaf1987··on Rumor: Microsoft To Buy Nokia For $30 Billion
Then why would anyone bother licensing Windows Phone 7? It doesn't make sense, they'd be directly competing with their own customers.
lotusleaf1987··on Lodsys explains in-app patent warning letters sent to iOS developers
Apple should just sue them back so hard no one will ever think to try this crap again. I prefer them not to pay these scumbags a dime, it would set a precedent that would only encourage more trolls.
lotusleaf1987··on Lodsys explains in-app patent warning letters sent to iOS developers
So basically an exact opposite of Intellectual Ventures? The problem with this is that people are still wasting energy, money, and time defending themselves. We need to get to a point where people can do their jobs without having to be paranoid that their going to get slammed with a lawsuit for some obscure and vague patent.

I think patents should be issued on a use it or lose it basis: if you do not make attempts to at least produce or license the product, you should not be allowed to horde it's IP and you it to extort others. Non-practicing entities, aka patent trolls, should be made illegal in general if they aren't making attempts to license their IP.

lotusleaf1987··on Ask HN: At what point does being a loyal early hire become a poor choice?
David Adams, you're exactly the type of boss to avoid. If you're paying me less than you know I'm worth and hiring other people who contribute less and are less important, but are being compensated more--then that means you disrespect me as an employee and an individual and are taking advantage of me, knowingly, which makes it far worse.

"et them know that you feel you're not being adequately compensated, and you've been thinking of starting a job hunt, but that your sense of loyalty dictates that you let them know now"

I absolutely would not do this. Wait until you have other offers, if you play your cards now they could withhold giving you a reference or not as good of one as you truly deserve since they know it will be to their detriment.

Do what is best for yourself, not some startup which has clearly illustrated, by the facts presented, that it does not value you as an employee. Someone else will, go find them--you owe it to yourself.

As jfarmer said above: the kind of company that takes advantage of you when you're ignorant isn't the kind of company you want to work for even after you're fully-informed and can renegotiate a better deal.

lotusleaf1987··on Honeycomb Has A Fighting Chance Against The iPad
I disagree, but I respect your opinion. I think the tablet market will ultimately look more like the mp3 player market: Apple has a head start, it's a better platform for developers (in terms of tools and profits/revenue) in general, iTunes lock-in keeps customers loyal to Apple, iPhone/iPad universal apps and app compatibility makes iPhone users even more likely to purchase iPads, many exclusive apps being cross promoted (Infinity Blade, Final Fantasy, HBO GO), and pricing--iPads are still cheaper than comparable tablets.

But I think the most important thing is that Apple has retail stores, whereas phones are sold by the carriers.

lotusleaf1987··on Ask HN: At what point does being a loyal early hire become a poor choice?
|Looking for a job though already feels like being disloyal.

Not to be offensive, but you're brainwashed. You should be thinking about yourself. Why are you sacrificing your career, happiness, quality of life, and opportunities to a company that sounds like they're using/abusing you--low pay, no equity, bad work environment.

If they're so dependent on you, then you should be compensated accordingly. Your value to the company and your pay are directly related.

lotusleaf1987··on Ask HN: At what point does being a loyal early hire become a poor choice?
Stick with it until you find another job, especially now that you can leverage the experience and everything you've learned. A paycheck is better than none at all so I'd wait to find a replacement before you quit, also it's usually easier to find a job when you're already employed.
lotusleaf1987··on President Obama Wants You--In Jail
This is absolutely the type of stuff that should be flagged--linkbait, politics, off-topic.

How can anyone take an article seriously when the title is so intellectually dishonest, hyperbolic, and factually untrue? Please keep this stuff on Reddit.

They were making on XServe and specifically said they were only discontinuing it to focus on their core products--ie consumer products.

WebObjects, meh, if that's the biggest fault you can point out in Apple then they're doing fine.

lotusleaf1987··on [dead]
That's delusional and never going to happen. Companies don't just give away money.
lotusleaf1987··on [dead]

lotusleaf1987··on Dropbox Lied to Users about Data Security, Complaint to FTC Alleges
Seconded, I dislike the evasiveness I detect and the corporate speak. It ignores the actual problem, which to me opens up even bigger problems when you just stick your head in the sand.
lotusleaf1987··on [dead]
How can they even claim something like that and get away with it? Silicon Valley, Hollywood, Central Coast/Napa vineyards, agriculture production, services, travel industry, world-class hospitals like the Mayo Clinic, Stanford, UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, and on and on.

There are only a handful of places I can imagine would be better for business.

lotusleaf1987··on [dead]
Why can't California collectively shame Google/Apple/Intel and others into paying more taxes? They're obviously headquartered here but pay no taxes in California because they just off-shore the profits and claim incorporation in Delaware.
lotusleaf1987··on Netflix Co-Founder: It isn't lying if you believe it
Translation: intellectual dishonesty is worse than ignorance.

I loved that book by the way. 'On Truth' was good too, but 'On Bullshit' is definitely better.

lotusleaf1987··on The Ballmer Days Are Over
You get my point thought regardless of the example, Oracle doesn't make phones, and Samsung doesn't make game consoles.

Here is a quote from Jobs: People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.

And can you give an example and cite how Apple tried and failed to enter B2B?

lotusleaf1987··on The Ballmer Days Are Over
Windows 7 is a decade behind OS X.

Why does Apple need to worry about B2B? They sell consumer products--iPads, iPhones, iPods, Macbooks--that's where they make the bulk of their revenue/profits.

The idea that it's valid to criticize Apple for not having enough B2B is like complaining that Fender doesn't make flutes. It just isn't their business.

lotusleaf1987··on The Ballmer Days Are Over
It's a pretty ignorant criticism to complain that Apple doesn't do enough B2B, that's like complaining General Electric doesn't do enough pharmaceuticals--it's not even in Apple's business scope to worry about B2B, they make consumer and prosumer products. I treat idiots with the respect they deserve.
lotusleaf1987··on The Ballmer Days Are Over
>Everyone heaps platitudes on Jobs but the reality is he has no understanding of or interest in business needs. On the other hand, you can make an argument that Ballmer has performed quite well on this front.

Yeah Apple definitely doesn't need all that cash they're raking in.

Move along please, point to something substantive and back it up with evidence before you arrogantly dismiss Steve Jobs. He has valid criticisms such as how will he be replaced? But what you said, absolutely is not backed up by all the available evidence. You then go on to praise Ballmer? Bizarre.

They're being murdered because of our own un-pragramatic religious and ideological interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. I agree with the right to bear arms, but there should a limit. A hand-gun with a limited magazine seems reasonable, an assault rifle with armor piercing bullets and an extended magazine doesn't.

In 2005 when the assualt weapons ban was lifted the cartels were able to get their hands on a cheaper and better source of weapons. The balance of power shifted more to the cartels as they were able to get better weapons. We should be helping Mexico because the cartels are beginning to look like an insurgency.

Edit: If you're downvoting me can you at least try to explain why it's not our fault that our weapons sold in the US are being used to murder civilians and contribute to a narco-state? Felipe Calderon even said this as recently as yesterday on Bloomberg.

lotusleaf1987··on Satellite Images of North Korea Prison Camps Find 200,000 Living as Slaves
I've similarly joked that for the 3 trillion we're spending on Iraq and Afghanistan we could've just flown planes overhead that dropped porn, pop music, fast food, junk food, Xbox/PS3s, iPods/iPads etc. It would've been much cheaper, more effective, and worked much faster.

Who's going to want to be a martyr when you're Tivo'ing something at home microwaving a Hot-Pocket?

Vice Guide has a great documentary available streaming on Netflix. It was so depressing/surreal/horrifying all at once.
