lostpixel··on Show HN: Trail Router – generate running routes that prefer greenery and nature
Looks interesting! Have you considered providing a way to sync routes directly to Running watches?
lostpixel··on Being Multi-Cloud with Cloudflare
This is an interesting point, and I think one that anyone considering this approach should consider. The way we segregate multi-cloud is the delivery of primarily our front-end app. Depending on if you are in an EU or US region you will be redirect to an API instance and then have direct connectivity of that API, this is mainly due to regulatory requirements.

As a 2nd data point check-out https://www.backplane.io/ - from Blake Mizeranyt the (former) technical lead of etcd

Nice spot, we have moved the link up to the top of the post such that people can jump directly to the CF blog link.
lostpixel··on Ask HN: What's up with the BillForward hiring post?
If curious, it was a Columnar Transposition with Billforward as the key!
lostpixel··on Ask HN: What's up with the BillForward hiring post?
My mistake, seems like whitespace+html+copy+paste to the HN poster went wrong here. We too have been trying to get it back to its former state ;)

Will make sure I get an accredited third party to review before posting the next one!

If anyone is in London/SF hit me up for a beer or three :)

lostpixel··on Lessons learned from using Docker Swarm mode in production
I know it's counter to your question, but it really is quite trivial to containerise a java app, for example:

  FROM openjdk:8u92-jdk-alpine
  COPY file.jar file.jar

  CMD java -Duser.timezone=UTC -cp file.jar com.foo

and to stay on-topic, you can run java apps in mesos without a docker wrapper :)
lostpixel··on Ask HN: Where can I buy real software companies?
Worked next to the FE guys in a startup space and they are certainly hard working guys and know there stuff. Would recommend chatting to as well.
lostpixel··on Balanced payments is shutting down
This is indeed very sad news. We at BillForward (YCS14) found the Balanced payments platform for ACH very well designed.

Plaid and Stripe certainly have caught up and both and offer good ACH alternatives. Best of luck to those migrating. Happy to chat with anyone who is interested in help with gateway independent ACH payments and subscription management. I'm on ian AT billforward . NET

lostpixel··on HiredBox – Ask the right questions in your technical interviews
There is a lot interesting stuff going on in the hiring space, I like that this has a human touch - uber-for interviewers.

have you thought of working with something like https://clarity.fm/?

lostpixel··on How Does a Debugger Work?
As someone who used to play with debugger implementations a bunch it's nice to see some articles digging into this.

Only feedback I would give is to remove the shadow on your text, I had to manually disable the shadow before I was able to read :).

lostpixel··on Ask HN: What companies offer an API as a product?
A bit meta, but companies use someone like Sheet Labs to offer API's as a product.

I half-remember they tried to do a subset of this with some LISP/SCHEME, but it didn't pan out too well.

lostpixel··on BillForward (YC S14) Wants to Change the Way You’re Charged for Subscriptions
Stripe is great if you want to build it yourself but when you start doing more sophisticated things, multiple pricing plans, tiered pricing, fixed-terms etc your development team will have to spend a lot of time building these tools internally.

BillForward also aims to provide more infrastructure around metrics and general management of subscriptions.

lostpixel··on Show HN: Sheetlabs – Turn your spreadsheets into APIs
Interesting, quite neat that you can share the data between organizations in a permissioned manner. Pricing is interesting, you may want to consider a usage based model rather than flat fee.
lostpixel··on Show HN: Subscription Billing for Developers and Startups
we do :)
lostpixel··on Show HN: Subscription Billing for Developers and Startups
As pointed out by dan_bk we provide a bunch of features above the plan based subscriptions Stripe offer.

If you think you are going to be selling your product with usage based pricing, or want to use tiered pricing then we can add value from what you get with Stripe. Feel free to drop me an e-mail at ian AT billforward . net and can talk through you use-case.

lostpixel··on Show HN: Subscription Billing for Developers and Startups
Hi, thanks for the feedback on messaging.

What we are trying to do is enable companies to have a single billing platform that grows with them from simple flat priced subscriptions all the way up to subscriptions which have multiple components and pricing strategies.

For example some of our customers sell their subscriptions with 3 or 4 components, for example international calls, local calls, 4g usage, 3g usage etc. Inside each of these units they give discounts the more you use. For example up to 100 minutes of X is $1 a minute, whereas anything above 100 minutes X is charged at 75c a minute.

lostpixel··on Show HN: Subscription Billing for Developers and Startups
Hey there, one of the BillForward founders here.

Our goal is to enable any company to bill how they want without hassle or constraints of building out a full subscription stack. Billing models such as tiered/volume pricing and usage billing can get complex but we make them very simple to use. You can often implement these features in places such as Stripe et al but often the minutiae becomes complex. We built the product that can scale from a simple flat price all the way up to composite price plans with tiered/volume pricing.

drop me a message offline and we can discuss! cheers
lostpixel··on Show HN: BillForward – Subscription billing platform for startups and developers
Hey! nice to hear from you again :) Thanks for the great feedback...

Good call on the mission critical aspect, we spent a lot of time of that side of things - so even more reason to highlight.

I think we have a few blogs posts lined up which discuss technology, as you can imagine we use quite a few things. As a quick overview we use some relational and no-SQL dbs, a bunch of Java with some Hadoop and Cassandra thrown into the mix :). Node.JS and AngularJS for the front-end servers.

Thanks for feedback. Will fix typo :)
lostpixel··on Show HN: BillForward – Subscription billing platform for startups and developers
OP here: Good question. We sit one layer above Stripe in the payments stack - we are payment gateway agnostics. When you need to manage many different pricing plans/upgrades our goal is to help you scale your subscriptions.

For example if you have a Stripe plan where you charge $5 a seat, but want to reduce the cost as the volume increases or you want to diversify the way you sell, maybe the subscriptions includes a usage charge billed monthly.

Interesting that this has popped up on here. I have been recommending it to a few friends in Europe, very aesthetically pleasing design.
lostpixel··on Shortcat - Keyboard productivity app for Mac OS X
Very nice. On your readme page you mention that with sublime text nothing works. I presume the onus will be on Sublime text developers to make their tabs available to the assit API?

EDIT: On further inspection of README this is somewhat covered. /sleepy
