lostmymind66··on $15 Minimum Wage Would Leave 1.3M Jobless, Lift as Many Out of Poverty
Raising the minimum wage is only a band-aid. Within a few short years, inflation picks up and your $15/hour won't really go as far anymore.

Australia and Scandinavian countries are good examples of this in action: high minimum age, but everything is ridiculously expensive.

It's much better if we provide education, so people better themselves and increase their value in the workplace.

I feel like this is only used by the politicians, who don't really care about people getting out of poverty, and want people to not only vote for them (for getting a government-enforced raise), but be dependent on them for life.

lostmymind66··on Norway turns criminals into good neighbours
Norway is surrounded by countries that share many of the same beliefs and culture and itself is mostly a mono culture. This will not work in countries like the US or the UK.
lostmymind66··on A Government Guide to Keeping Insulin Unaffordable
If the generics are $25, then I don't see a problem. It's cheaply available and this article is wrong.
lostmymind66··on King's College London breached GDPR sharing list of activist students with cops
Let's flip this around. If these were 'nazis' would you feel the same way?

In the US, alleged nazis are doxxed and given to the press, police, and anyone else and nobody seems to care. I don't think I've seen on complaint here on HN.

My point is that we should care about everyone's privacy..not just the people that you agree with politically.

lostmymind66··on Amazon: Carbon emissions from our Australian bit barns aren't for public viewing
What we really need to invest in is Nuclear energy. It's clean and efficient. But the liberals in the US will always be against it. Who knows, we might not even have an issue if so many communities around the US had been against it in the 80s and 90s.

The other sad fact is that after all we do to prevent CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere, it won't stop humans from emitting it. I predict the next thing will be population control.

lostmymind66··on The Tyranny of Trendy Ideas in Academia
I still disagree. Many issues usually fall into 2 or a few sides (abortion, taxes, gun control, etc), so statistically, it's fairly easy to come up with your own opinion on any one issue and match the mainstream.

There are also many people that go to the extremist views because they want to be different. They are guided by the mainstream and choose a different side, just so they can feel like a rebel. I don't really consider this independent thought.

lostmymind66··on A Government Guide to Keeping Insulin Unaffordable
It's unaffordable because there is a monopoly on Insulin. Why is there a monopoly? Because it takes decades of work and close to a billion dollars to get a new drug through FDA approval.

We need to work on bringing these costs down, so more companies can actually compete. Government regulation schemes will only reduce the amount of companies willing to go through the process and give us less choice in the end.

lostmymind66··on The Tyranny of Trendy Ideas in Academia
Just because you came to the same conclusion as the mainstream population, doesn't mean your are incapable of independent thought.

"That doesn't mean such a person won't be wrong as much as anyone else, but they're not necessarily more wrong than conventional wisdom"

Conventional wisdom usually is a result of many generations passing down wisdom and knowledge down to the next generation. It's not always correct, but I will give it more credibility than extremist views, which are almost always incorrect and based more on emotion than facts.

Extremest views are also usually held by younger people, which immediately should be put up to more scrutiny, simple based on a lack of knowledge and life experience.

lostmymind66··on Amazon: Carbon emissions from our Australian bit barns aren't for public viewing
You can't point fingers at the US when the pollution is so bad in your cities that you need to wear gas masks or risk lung cancer in a few years.

It seems nobody really wants to solve the problem and instead wants to just blame the US/Europe, while ignoring the biggest polluters on the planet.

You can't tell me this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollution_in_China

Is not causing enormous amounts of damage to our environment and planet.

lostmymind66··on Amazon: Carbon emissions from our Australian bit barns aren't for public viewing
What's also sad is that China and India regularly pollute the atmosphere (and cover it up) with impunity and are left out of all discussions of climate change because somehow 'developing' means you aren't responsible for your actions.
lostmymind66··on Employee sends his own job to China so he can surf the web
What a waste of your life. Why do this only to look at Reddit all day? I would have at least done something productive, learned something new, etc.
lostmymind66··on Amazon can be held liable for third-party seller products: U.S. appeals court
The amount of counterfeits on Amazon these days is astounding.

I was a legitimate seller about 10 years ago and I had a competitor buy one of my products and complained to Amazon that it was a counterfeit. My account was suspended and I had no recourse. To this day, I can't be attached to any seller account without it being put under review and eventually banned.

At this point I had 100% positive feedback and I spent lots of time to please all of my customers. My money was held for 90 days and it nearly bankrupted me.

I learned two things from this:

1) Don't base your entire business on a third-party platform. They become your boss and a single point of failure.

2) Fuck Amazon. I hope they get broken up and destroyed by the US government. They abused their third-party sellers for years and then when they couldn't extract enough profit anymore, they were systematically put out of business and pushed out.

lostmymind66··on CEO pay is out of control and there is no justification for it
This is up to the individual company or shareholders, so there doesn't need to be justification.

In the free market, salary is worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay.

lostmymind66··on Ask HN: At 9 cents/GB downloaded, how can any company afford cloud computing?
Cloud hosting is for companies that have money and don't want to worry about managing everything themselves. You can get much better rates elsewhere.
lostmymind66··on Joe Rogan Experience #1315 – Bob Lazar and Jeremy Corbell
A very interesting listen. I'm still not sure if I believe all of his stories.
lostmymind66··on US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries
WW2 was about conquest and they were invaded by the Russians. Being neutral didn't really save them from the attack.

When push comes to shove, neutral countries eventually need to pick sides or they will be taken over.

lostmymind66··on Facebook Fined 1M Euro over Cambridge Analytica Scandal
It's pretty sick that so many people care about this now, but didn't care at all when Obama ran a similar campaign in 2008 (I think both are just as bad). I read countless articles lauding him and his techniques as the future of running political campaigns..when it was just the same old spammy techniques.

Facebook knew what he was doing, allowed it to happen (because Zuckerberg supported him), and then closed it off for future politicians..and it was brushed under the carpet.

I guess the moral of the story is that if you are a Democrat and big corporations and the media like you, you can get away with murder.

lostmymind66··on US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries
Canada, like many other countries around the world, enjoys the luxury of being protected by the US and doesn't have to spend as much money on defense.

During WWII, do you think appeasement would have worked?

The reason many evil countries aren't bombing the US and Canada is because they know they would be obliterated by the US military due to past campaigns.

lostmymind66··on We should start working less to prepare for automation
With this logic, should we stop working altogether to prepare for death?
lostmymind66··on What I Learned Co-Founding Dribbble
I think the issue with social rules like the above, is that they seem kind of childish and would make me feel like I am in elementary school.

In the real world, some people are annoying and you should learn how to cope with it instead of having artificial rules to defend against it.

None of the issues in this list are really that offensive or disruptive of the regular work day. If I worked at a place that had these rules, I would quit.

lostmymind66··on [dead]
Allowing people to defecate and urinate on the streets with impunity, is not really doing anything.
lostmymind66··on Instagram Is Trying to Curb Bullying. First, It Needs to Define Bullying
Bullying has been redefined as anything critical you have toward any action of a specific person.
lostmymind66··on Is This the Death Rattle of Mail-Order Meal Kits?
I'm surprised this hasn't happened already. mail-order meal kit companies are not profitable. All of them have been burning through cash from the beginning.
lostmymind66··on Ask HN: Does a Freelancer Need a Resume?
yes. I am a freelancer and use a resume and code samples to get jobs.
lostmymind66··on TV is the most common way for Americans to get local news, but fewer watch
As I've gotten older, I started watching the local news before I go to bed.
lostmymind66··on At Work, Expertise Is Falling Out of Favor
It's falling out of favor with our politicians too. People care more about a person's gender and sexuality than if they can actually do the job.
lostmymind66··on ‘Pre-bunk’ game reduces susceptibility to disinformation
The problem is that real reporting costs money and the bottom fell out of the industry awhile back, so what we now have is lots of people repeating what they saw on Twitter or Facebook and making up the rest..which is passed off as 'news'.
lostmymind66··on A plan to phase out fossil fuel production in the US
The problem is that there is no real solution. All of these plans involve ripping fossil fuel dependency out by its roots and just hoping that we have something to replace it.

The end result will be skyrocketing prices that only the wealthy can afford and a broken economy. I can't imagine any politician even thinking about sponsoring this as the devastation will be linked to them by their political rivals for many years to come.

It's only being used as a talking point right now to get votes.

How are we going to replace gasoline based cars in the US, when there is no infrastructure setup? We should concentrate on this first.

lostmymind66··on Deepfake Videos Could Destroy Trust in Society – Here’s How to Restore It
Who needs Deepfakes? There are images from 2015 circulating Twitter today that claim the current administration is putting kids in cages.

It just states it as fact with no proof and thousands of people believe it.

lostmymind66··on The Sham of Shareholder Capitalism
"The idea that somehow shareholders are at the centre of corporate concern is shown to be a sham, yet again, by this."

I disagree. Most publicly traded companies are at the whim of their shareholders. If the stock price takes a dive, they need to make changes immediately to remedy the situation.

"In essence, we have a form of capitalism that claims to be for shareholders and yet that is clearly a sham. No wonder it is not working."

How is it not working? We live in the best time with the lowest poverty rates in the history of humanity. I can open up an account to trade on the stock market today with very little money.
