lostlogin··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
> your NAS is going to spend the whole week rebuilding

I’ve got a Synology that’s mostly full of 20TB drives. As you say, adding a drive takes about a week. Expanding the array is even longer.

lostlogin··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
> I hate counterfeiting

There is a good book about Konrad Kujau who forged heaps of stuff before faking Hitler diaries and the getting caught. It’s worth a read.

A line that’s stuck with me (and is hopefully remembered correctly) ‘there are efficient documents and inefficient documents.’

Someone is thinking of the children.

He has been propping up coal.

> If you set partisan politics aside for 90 seconds

You realise that government agencies including the pentagon have been gutted, and filled with conmen and frauds?

It would be funny for the rest of the world if we didn’t also have to pay for the people America elected.

lostlogin··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
I do that with a Leaf. I did have to change a tyre after 4 years, and last week I filled the wiper fluid.

> The main difference here is that Russia is not funded by western nations

Incorrect.

The west still buys Russian gas. Half of Russian gas exports go there.

https://energyandcleanair.org/august-2026-monthly-analysis-o...

> No nation in the west will hesitate to condemn Russia's war crimes

The US doesn’t condemn Russian aggression, and try get the current administration to say that Russia invaded or is committing war crimes.

lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
That’s the problem though - the article has an example of the AI screwing up the homework and the students don’t notice even when warned.
lostlogin··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
For sure Russia oppressed Ukraine. The Holodomor was genocide.

The building of the subway wasn’t done by an independent Ukraine though, it was done under the rule of the USSR.

lostlogin··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
I think I’m missing your point?

The USSR didn’t bomb it’s citizens all that often did it?

lostlogin··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
> or even save transmission of a couple communicable diseases

There is probably an upper bound to the ‘saves infection’ effect of the increases speed and resulting greater commuter spacing. As the speed goes up people will want to hold the hand rail, and collect each other’s diseases.

lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
> Most students don't care about learning, they are here for grades

It’s a virtuous circle though, as many universities are there for the money, so it’s a beautiful exchange.

lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
The article mentions study content that AI has got confidently wrong. That’s going to be some crap markings.
lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
> You can use LLMs to grade.

The article gives examples of LLMs being wrong. An AI grading of an AI submission would presumably give a good mark, to a wrong answer.

lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
I’m wondering if this is the way, but more faculty time is needed for assessing. So education costs go up.
lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
> oral presentations.

These can be written by AI. Or do you mean something more like the defending of a thesis?

lostlogin··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
> I am teaching some math courses, and I see how LLMs disrupted all standard approaches, and I don't know what to do.

I wonder what the financial cost of AI will be to teaching? Does teaching get more expensive? More things need to be supervised, more things need to be presentations or in person?

lostlogin··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
> Kyiv subway stations are also air raid shelters

When building them, they probably didn’t expect to be hiding from Russian attacks.

lostlogin··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
According to the video from clan, speeding up escalators above about .75m/s results people leaving gaps between each other, so the speed increase is negated by a volume decrease.
lostlogin··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
That video is surprisingly interesting.

Thank you.

Not a lot. But being anti <X> and letting anyone know is imposing your views on others.

> There is an assumption but no explanation how kicking long time residents out of their homes due to tax pressure is a benefit to the community

One benefit of an equal property taxation system would b having workers close to the city centres where they work rather retirees.

lostlogin··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
The effects have got to be pretty intense.

‘We need new shit! Let’s raise taxes.’ While not having to pay them yourself.

lostlogin··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
That's taking a middle line I guess? I think Trump would pick a a more Russian friendly tone.
lostlogin··on An airport cooled by natural ventilation
Thats correct, but warm air that is moving cools you more than the same air when it's still.
lostlogin··on An airport cooled by natural ventilation
It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing. Too many buildings are build with complete neglect of the environment, with huge swathes of glass facing the sun. Then we have huge chillers try to compete and bring down the temperature. A little consideration goes a long way.
lostlogin··on An airport cooled by natural ventilation
But in small doses it smells great.
lostlogin··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
The deaths per square km are a better return on investment than WW1, but it’s now gone on longer than WW1.
