lostbit··on Astronomy Picture of the Day (timelapse with Earth rotating)
The idea of the video was to remove Earth rotation from the view. This removal was digitally made.

One of the original videos used in this compilation - with the traditional "sky is moving" feeling - is this one: http://vimeo.com/22439234. It's the best, in my opinion.

lostbit··on Ask HN: Who do you think has the most karma on HN?
I guess you're talking about the "no vote count" change.

Thanks for this. I've been wondering what was used to make HN for some time.

lostbit··on [dead]
One must remember that there can be a difference between an argument that is logical and one that is simply persuasive, although they can be one and the same.

I agree that we can use some persuasive-only arguments - that is: some type of informal fallacy - to justify a line of thought.

lostbit··on Internet: 2.6 jobs created for each job lost (PDF from McKinsey Study)
Conclusion:

In the 13 countries McKinsey studied, the Internet has contributed on average 3.4 percent to GDP, weighting more than agriculture, energy, and other better-established industries, and it adds considerable vigor to economic growth. Perhaps surprisingly, the brunt of this impact (about 75 percent) is from industries that are not directly linked to the Internet, except of course by their computers. This value comes primarily from increased productivity.

Understanding just how much the Internet contributes to national economies should spur government and business leaders to seek ways to optimize their participation in the global Internet ecosystem. Encouraging usage is an unavoidable first step in leveraging public spending, but leaders must also focus on providing human capital, financial capital, infrastructure, and the appropriate business environment.

lostbit··on Inspired by XKCD:903, Wikipedia steps to philosophy
Yes. It dates back to 2008. Interesting that someone got bugged by it that time and just now it took this dimension.
lostbit··on Google Correlate
A bunch of Portuguese words seems to follow a pattern with a big rise on 2008 and a huge drop following. Looks like something was wrong with the data. http://correlate.googlelabs.com/search?e=suporte&t=weekl...

I searched: suporte, cadeira, filho, barata, coelho, figueira, orkut.

lostbit··on 6 Unusual City Maps, Locals vs Tourists
It seems that locals at Berlin are not keen on taking photos of their own city.

What's that area center-right in SF that apparently no tourist likes to go?

lostbit··on That famous space shuttle photo: When is sharing stealing?
A system to reward the photo taker would be nice. In one minute, photo is taken and published. It sould take no more than another minute for news companies use the photo by paying a small standard fee to the person who made it available. It could be like a 'donate' button or a more serious fee just to provide some benefit to the person who was in the right place/time. Usually, they don't expect anything. Maybe a Flattr like system?

lostbit··on Kung Fu Tetris
Very neat idea. Kung Fu + AI + Vision Computing. There might be a chance that it could be played only with a PC and a Webcam, like the flash game Motion Bubbles, I guess.
lostbit··on Google I/O 2011 T-shirt puzzle solved
Is Morse Code really a puzzle? That's the first thing I think when I see dots and dashes, specially if there are "..." or "---".
lostbit··on DCA: A simple, unpatentable cancer treatment?
Yes... That's exactly where I ended too. The main page of the site, http://www.dca.med.ualberta.ca/, still points to the 2007 research/article. Maybe they didn't want to break the optimism.
lostbit··on DCA: A simple, unpatentable cancer treatment?
I also noticed the 2007 reference. However, further checking the Univesity site on News & Updates, one will find that it went further to Clinical Trials and a new article in 2010 shows interesting results for glioblastoma (a type of cancer).
lostbit··on Comments Are Dead. We Need You to Help Reinvent Them
I like the idea of having a single ID for Internet. It reduces the burden of creating accounts everywhere. The ID could be used in any site that would like a non anonymous comment or activity. A request for ID info could pop-up for an accept button. There are solutions in the market, of course, but they have not yet got critical mass, I guess. The Id together with karma and voting would help a lot to select interesting comments.

A lot of our browsing activity is not anonymous anymore, I can see the ads are tracking me! So why not use this 'system' for something else?

lostbit··on World IPv6 day
It will happen on 8 June 2011. I still have to configure my core access (routers, firewalls) to try to enjoy this day.
lostbit··on Show HN: Fast, free online meetings - use code "hackernews" to play
Maybe your competitor will be join.me. Do you know how it compares to them?

I created an account. It's a very neat interface. I'll try to use it in a meeting soon.

lostbit··on 5 innovative tech companies that got it wrong in the end
I worked at Nortel between 2000 and 2004. It was a great company. Their equipment for Frame Relay / ATM networks - called Passport - was really nice. It's amazing that we still can find their devices for X.25 networks (DPN) and a lot os companies still use it. They have been working for decades now. Eventually, all those beige phones of the Meridian PBX we could find in Hotels and Companies will disappear...
lostbit··on Ask HN: How will Microsoft-Skype deal affect the Linux client?
If they focus on market share coverage, I think they will maintain Skype for Linux the same way there is skype for other OSs (including mobile). At the end of the day, revenues are made through the paid subscriptions. The software is more a mean to get the service.
lostbit··on Could you get more done by leaving work early?
I usually relax after I did something relevant in the day, doesn't matter if it's in the first hours of work. At this point, the feeling of "mission complete" makes me loose focus and use the following hours to do non work related stuff.

On the other hand, I feel bad when I did many small things during the whole day but could not complete many of them. After the day is finished, it's hard to point what I did and the day does not seem to worth when this happens.

lostbit··on Google Music Service
We're sorry. Music Beta is currently only available in the United States

It bothers me when this happens... I end giving up to find proxies or other ways to reach the site.

I tought I could just paste the title in Morse code into your script/page, but I see it goes only the other way, right?

lostbit··on Why the US can beat China: The Facts about SpaceX Costs
Fine. This is definitely good news. It proves a company is doing a great job, it gives hope and inspiration to other business try to be innovative and bring back the American spirit. But what will happen to space programs if American economy goes into a harder crisis? People will probably vote not to launch anything, not to look at the sky, but to spend money on land issues instead. My big concern is regarding the end of the dollar as the world's reserve currency. That could bring many succesfull companies down, specially those on American markets only. China can be a big issue to America if it starts no to believe in dollar currency anymore. In this context, beating China on innovation at Space programs might not mean Americans won.
lostbit··on How does one get acquired
Have you tried? https://flippa.com/ http://www.dealasite.com/ http://www.websitebroker.com/ http://sitepointmarket.com/

At least Flippa was mentioned here some times. I don't know how theses sites deal with as 650k/year site, but you are trying many options, I guess...

There is also the old discussion about a site value: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=355627

PS. You could have added "Ask HN:" in your title. That would probably attract more people to answer you.

lostbit··on How fast is the Internet at Google? Mind blowing.
My Youtube connection has been strange for some weeks now. I'm in Brazil accessing Internet from very close to a core network (Terremark NAP). I started to notice the buffering after watching/listening to instant.fm by feross.

It's strange: sometimes a video downloads at 38Mbps - very fast - and some other it keeps buffering resulting in less than 1Mbps. I can see it with NetMeter (I love to always have a graph of my connection speed).

I analysed it a litte bit, all I could see was packet loss and retransmissions. It might be realted to the IP where I'm getting the youtube video, but I still have to dig it more.

lostbit··on Stolen Camera Finder
The photo itself is not uploaded to the site for checking. Only a few bytes with the serial and camera model/manufacturer are sent in a HTTP GET to stolencamerafinder.com. This makes it very light in traffic.

The site can expand the camera->owner database by searching photos with valid EXIFs on famous sites and correlating it to the user.

lostbit··on Hacker Newsletter
I've subcribed since the begining. I like the way the sessions are divided. I also passed the newsletter to friends I know that they would not follow HN everyday. I understand there is always some bias in any news selection but I believe Kale is doing very well!
lostbit··on My Latest Project - Share Music Instantly
Nice to listen to something new. I could not drecrease the video to something below 720p. Is this somehow fixed or a bug?
