lossyalgo··on I gave Opus 5.5 one prompt and six hours to visualize Invisible Cities
Yeah for now, this week, on that model, all of which are constantly changing. I would love to know actual cost of running those inferences on such hardware, including electricity, training, etc. i.e. what we should be paying. I can imagine that job would cost multiple hundreds if they were charging enough to actually be profitable companies.

> ...that capability just appears.

For now, while we are still riding this wonderful subsidized AI gravytrain, but how much will it cost in tokens/$$$ next year when investors finally want a return on their investment? Or if the AI bubble pops? I doubt running 7B models locally will suffice, even at the rate of improvement we are seeing.

And how much will it cost next year when all these companies IPO and need to pay back all that insane debt?

Cool idea! I won't paste my prompt here to avoid letting LLMs train on it but here's my attempt:

lossyalgo··on Colorectal Cancer Is Rising Among the Young, Even Kids and Teens
I don't think GP is making that claim, rather, they are claiming that IF the hypotheses in the article (with 2 linked sources) are in fact the causes, then it will be difficult to change those things.

> ...but it's hard to live a better life for most as the above is just the norm now.

lossyalgo··on Colorectal Cancer Is Rising Among the Young, Even Kids and Teens
I would hope/assume all doctors would recommend less sitting/more walking as well as eating more fruits & veggies and less ultra-processed foods.

I would also assume it's obvious to most readers here that GP's guidance don't necessarily have to be the reasons for increased prevalence of colorectal cancer, but they would at the last help decrease chances of other health-related issues.

Thanks for fact-checking me. It used to be 49% and it was only the "share of profits under the old capped-profit structure".

Probably depends highly on location, company and type of lock. I needed to get into my mailbox after losing the keys. They wanted 150 for literally 5 minutes with a screwdriver (lesson learned!). Of course I'm paying for those years of experience as well as the drive over. I was able to talk them down to 120. Oh and it was during the weekday! I also did research prior and called a few places, they all basically said the same thing: "depends on the lock but probably minimum 100".

Why do we need to throw AI at everything? It's a huge waste of resources for a problem that is/was easily solved by uBlock Lite (and other alternatives).

The truly absurd part is that datacenters are barely being built and those that are built can't be turned on because they don't have enough power. Satya Nadella admitted recently that they have warehouses full of unused hardware because they a) can't get datacenters built and b) don't have enough power i.e. this whole RAM scandal is a bloody joke. If OpenAI goes bust (their financials are a huge mess and lots of red flags - they might not even survive to IPO!) and then what will happen to all those "inked" deals to buy all that RAM?

Got a 7-year old QNAP NAS recently and wanted to try Jellyfin. Installed, running, indexing... 6 hours later NAS is no longer reachable. Nothing worked so had to hard reboot. Afterwards the Jellyfin service wouldn't start anymore. Installed Plex (via app store) and 2 weeks later everything is indexed and streams to multiple devices, though I did have to google a few times to fix things related to crashing while transcoding and playing subtitles. It was literally 2 toggles in the UI. The only irksome thing is it doesn't let me play audio files (which could be related to the crappy built-in Plex app on the cheap projector). I also wish there was a way to disable all the (paid) cloud offerings, I want it to be LAN-only.

To be fair, Jellyfin page doesn't list my NAS as being supported, so I had to "manually" install it (a couple commands and clicks).

lossyalgo··on What happened to nerds?
Related (for the non-grey/whitebeards who saw Revenge of the Nerds): Calling someone a nerd used to be fairly demeaning. Today I would say it swings between okay/acceptable and funny/cool, depending on the social circle.
lossyalgo··on What happened to nerds?
And yet even more nerds than ever are devoting themselves to AI. I just wonder - to what end?
