lorenzorhoades··on French bar owners arrested for offering free WiFi but not keeping logs
Well... Sending out a letter can get lost in the junk mail,. I'm sure the other establishments got this message though.
lorenzorhoades··on How Big Oil Misled the Public into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled
No, but I kinda understand why I was downvoted.
lorenzorhoades··on How Big Oil Misled the Public into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled
Controversial uninformed opinion:

Recycling is a major cause to the Homeless epidemic. Roads, brakes, weight are major causes to pollution. Heavy cars (IE. Super dense lithium, nickel, cobalt) will cause more pollution.

lorenzorhoades··on How Big Oil Misled the Public into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled
i've heard this before. It was in regards to people washing their clothes.
lorenzorhoades··on How Big Oil Misled the Public into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled
Are you talking about Tacoma/ Ruston Area?

I agree with you. Recycling is stupid; weirdly enough it's a major contributor(? Totally not the right word) to homelessness.

Secondly, it's allowed to be 'disposed of' internationally. Who knows what the Chinese and Indians are doing with it.

Instead of CRV at the consumer level, we should have susidies or direct payments to suppliers for reusing plastic. All the plastic that isn't 'intrinsically valuable', ends up safely in a landfill.

lorenzorhoades··on LSD Chemist William Pickard to Be Released from Prison
Like Australia, but more expensive and brutal.
lorenzorhoades··on The end of the Arab world’s oil age is nigh
Government investing in technology is great. Wish we did more of it.
lorenzorhoades··on Consider getting a “DIY” degree online instead of a traditional CS major
i've seen this comment a couple times on HN and find it funny. My classes and lectures were mostly about what was not in the book and if you tried to read the book and take the test you'd get around a 50%.
lorenzorhoades··on The end of the Arab world’s oil age is nigh
I think you nailed it. However 'Planning for failure' breaks down in a future with economically viable carbon capture. What happens when nations are 'un-aligned' in how much carbon should be in the atmosphere/ the total globe. If it makes India a rainforest with a certain level of carbon, but makes the US a desert, how do you decide the optimal level of carbon PPM?
lorenzorhoades··on The end of the Arab world’s oil age is nigh
Elon and other CEO's in the transportation space owe alot of their success to the Obama administration. Massive loans to a variety of electrical car makers and the privatization of space access in the US.
lorenzorhoades··on Zoom closes account of U.S.-based Chinese activist after Tiananmen event
Tesla canceled Zoom due to these privacy concerns expressed in this article. We use Microsoft Teams now and it's much better. Everyone already used it as an instant messenger before this and since it's part of the Outlook ecosystem i've found that it's much better. It's also saved a ton of useless meetings that run really long because i can just call someone straight through Teams instead of setting a meeting.
lorenzorhoades··on Childhood's Work for Sale (Runescape)
I've often thought of selling my Runescape account and have even posted it before. However, every couple of years I hope on and have a couple of hours of pure joy of reminiscing before not touching it again for a couple years. I would suggest not selling it as that couple hours is worth more than money can buy.
lorenzorhoades··on Photographers, Instagrammers: Stop Being So Selfish and Disrespectful
Some say Hemmingway killed himself over his dispair for introducting the world to the running of the bulls festival. It seemed idyllic, and amazing in his book - Went there in 2014, and it's a bunch of tourist getting absolutely shit faced, and trying to mess with the bulls.
lorenzorhoades··on Too Many Companies Drain Value from the Economy
The solution is clear; ban lobbying. Why are you allowed to fund individuals running for office? That's called bribing, and it's illegal. BigCompanyX literally gives these people money in expectation of regulatory loopholes, and favoritism. Make a date prior to the election cycle where you have to register to run for office. From that date forward, allow no 'donations' or whatever they call it to come from individuals or corporations. Allow these people to run based on merits, not capital. Why are some of the great minds of our days not running for office?
lorenzorhoades··on Why Google+ Failed
The OP has obviously never used Instagram, which for my generation is much more popular than Facebook. Almost every reason listed for Google+'s failure, is a feature of instagrams massive success.
lorenzorhoades··on Mathematics all-in-one cheat-sheet (2013) [pdf]
I mean, thats essentially the apple app store right? Just with torrents and documents instead of apps? So like a freely distributed google docs, but for everything. That movie you downloaded a week ago got a better version, the sci-hub article you downloaded last week has commentary from the author or has been disputed, That microsoft office (excel, word, onenote) you've been working on with a group has a long revision history and automatic version control. You could even download the 'latest version' at 'run-time'; when you double click to open the document. There's a company, or atleast the very start of one in these ideas.

Elon Musk has LA? hahahaha
lorenzorhoades··on Blue Moon
There seems to be alot of hate here that blue orgin is not 'shooting high enough'. This will get 'America' back to the moon and this is a great thing! Congrats to Blue Orgin team, and I wish them all the luck.
lorenzorhoades··on Blue Moon
Thats capitalism... And due to capitalism Amazon has launched on of the most efficient infrastructures in the world. Their warehouses and logistics systems are state of the art. Launching a Space Company is a GREAT THING. It puts pressure on SpaceX, as competition has proven over the years to be the father of invention and innovation. Of course with growth comes externalities such as a increase global footprint. However, these things are judged in a silo. Without Amazon, there would not only most likely be another "Amazon", but in the unlikely scenario that it is not aggregated long term with one centralized company, a vast meriad of mom and pop shops would have a much larger footprint and be much less efficient. I hate all the anti-corporate tendencies that have been prevailing on hacker news lately.
lorenzorhoades··on Up to one million species are on the verge of extinction, U.N. panel says
I'm confused on why people actually care about global warming. That planet is in whats called a 'glacial age' on the historic time table of the earth. Yeah, we are rapidly depleting the ice caps (So what?) Yeah, we are slowly warming the earth. (So what?) yeah places like south florida are going to be underwater, and will potentially cost hundreds of billions (So what?). The point is, growth sacraficed now will have tremendous impacts on the future, as the law of compounding returns rings true here. It's pretty obvious that electric cars are much better than internal combustion, oil is a finite resource with tremendous political turmoil and complications sourounding it, and not to mention the costs of logistics while renewables are getting cheaper and more efficient by the year. People in the future will laugh at what we debated as a non-issue. Also, to be honest who cares about all the other animals? The same people who complain about climate change killing the polar bears are the same people who eat other animals. It's all rather laughable.
lorenzorhoades··on I Sell Onions on the Internet
This was an amazing read. Not only do you sell onions on the internet but you are an amazing writer! I had to stop and comment before I dived into what else you've written.

I copied the quote “take the path to Nothing, and go Nowhere until you reach it.” and got it turned into a canvas to hang above my desk.

lorenzorhoades··on Battery Reality: There’s Nothing Better Than Lithium-Ion Coming Soon
This is exactly what they are attempting to do with solid-state batteries. Again, the whole point of the article is that Lithium Ion batteries will continue to improve and with the vast economy of scale, will continue to be a cost effective option
lorenzorhoades··on Zuckerberg’s Rules Would Hurt Everyone but Facebook
The only problem I see here is Facebook is offloading the 'hard problem' of algorithmically dealing with such massive data that requires top-notch machine learning algorithms to be able to detect sentiment at 'Facebook level Scale' to a massively more technically inept party. Look up how much money it cost to do the ObamaCare website, then tell the same party to develop an algorithm that Facebook, one of the biggest technology company's in the world, is having a hard time solving. This problem is only going to get harder and harder as the amount of data created is rising.
lorenzorhoades··on Tesla – Introducing V3 Supercharging
These comments remind me of how much a bubble hacker news is. None of my friends would know what the hell a neural network was, and would laugh out loud if they heard that comment.
lorenzorhoades··on Tesla Model Y will be unveiled March 14th
you can make a 1000KWH car, and still be much less efficient than a 250KWH car. Range and speed is what matters not KWH. Aerodynamic, efficiency of enerygy conversion, etc.. comes into play.
lorenzorhoades··on You Don't Need to Quit Your Job to Make
I love these comments on Hacker News - Someone briefly skims the title and the first couple sections, and then makes some snarky comment about how unrealistic the article is. For some reason, these comments are almost always the most upvoted as well. You do have 8 hours of free time a day, and the whole point of the article is learning how to most effectively utilize those things. The article even has a name for all the things that get in the way like laundery, dinner, relationships, etc.
lorenzorhoades··on Mars One, which offered 1-way trips to Mars, declared bankrupt
> a lot more low-lying fruit that is being neglected in terms of improving our overall odds of survival.

Can you elaborate? You talking politically?

lorenzorhoades··on Mars One, which offered 1-way trips to Mars, declared bankrupt
Do you believe this would be worth it? Do you think our society does not have sufficiently advances technology to start a self sustaining colony in the desert? I think it would be absolutely trivial, and i'm pretty sure someone has already planned this out and decided against spending the money.
lorenzorhoades··on Mars One, which offered 1-way trips to Mars, declared bankrupt
As you have admitted in your post, that there is a none zero chance of humans becoming extinct. Don't you think it would be worth it to have some non-zero portion of the population and global budget working on ensuring our survival? Also, there are many commercial benefits that can be realized, not just idealistic ones. Mars has alot of deturium which could prove useful in fusion, it's lower delta V makes it a prime logistical hub for mining the astroid belt, etc etc. Read a plan for mars, and i think it will change your perspective.
