lordgilman··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2023)
Aidentified | Data Engineer | Remote (USA) | Full-time

We map personal relationships and present them in a way that helps sales teams find leads. There's a lot of heavy data engineering work that has to be done and you'd be part of the team doing it. Our data stack is PySpark / Python on EMR (AWS) and you'll be spending most of your time in it.

See https://www.aidentified.com/ for more product info.

If interested, send a resume / cover letter to dgilman at aidentified dot com.

lordgilman··on Features I'd Like in PostgreSQL
64 bit XIDs might land in PostgreSQL 16 https://commitfest.postgresql.org/41/3594/
lordgilman··on Features I'd Like in PostgreSQL
The overhead would be terrible. If implemented, you'd put the syntax in your queries, but a GUC or some such would turn off validation, it'd be off by default (because of that overhead) and you'd only turn it on for local dev and for testing.

The underlying issue, mixing up the cardinality of one side of the join, isn't a super tricky one to identify, especially once you've seen it once or twice or seen what the buggy output looks like. Every intermediate SQL developer has run into the bug and has fixed it. The vision I have for the feature is more like a set of training wheels for developers who are earning their SQL scars. And it's also probably not a terrible idea to document exactly where you are expecting the full M x N cartesian join results when you do want them.

lordgilman··on Features I'd Like in PostgreSQL
(Author here) This is also a neat idea but wouldn't help with subqueries, views or other computed relations getting joined on each other which is a major motivation of the validation proposal.
lordgilman··on Features I'd Like in PostgreSQL
(Author here) I think the purpose of the large result limiting is to avoid swamping the terminal with output. The whole set of --i-am-a-dummy features is to give a saving chance to the hackers who are typing away without any forethought into a prompt in autocommit mode. Using transactions, copy and pasting complete queries, having your coworker double-check your work etc give you enough foresight that you'll not have a need for it.
lordgilman··on Ask HN: Self-hosting in 2023: Nextcloud on Linode, or...?
I've been on TornadoVPS (formerly prgmr.com) for ~a decade and it's been fine. They lack the ability to do lots of storage like you may need for this project. If you can configure Nextcloud to use s3 or a competitor's clone for storage I think that would be a reasonable, measured exposure to Amazon/Google/Microsoft and you'll get to take advantage of their high reliability where you really need it.

lordgilman··on Jack Dorsey texts Elon Musk, March 26, 2022
California is a government too, separate from the federal government of the United States, and it hasn't been shy about regulating tech companies. I don't think this jump to foreign governments is substantiated.

lordgilman··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of releases/deployments of dozens micro-services?
I can't say my experience echoes your comment. I'm a former employer of a financial services (billing) company built around a mainframe code base started in the 70s. We probably qualify for the sort of business you had in mind with your comment.

We did four releases a year, across the entire organization (so mainframe and more modern platforms), on Saturday nights/early Sunday mornings. There was plenty of testing but there was still plenty of errors only found on the day of, and rushed to fix in the wee hours or daylight hours of Sunday morning.

The only thing that seemed to correlate with release quality was the overall risk of the release, i.e. the complexity and number of new features written during that quarter.

lordgilman··on Changes to Homebrew adversely affect Python development
As mentioned by the other poster they were both source distributions at first, followed by binaries later.

The pain is a bit lost to memory, but even as a long-time MacPorts user I understand why people wanted to switch. If everything has to be built from source you also have to build all your build-time dependencies from source, even weird ones for building docs or whatever. The behavior of MacPorts then (and still unchanged today) is to upgrade to the latest versions of all dependencies when installing or upgrading a requested package. So even if you had zlib sitting around if an update was pushed to zlib you're going to be building a new one. A lot of packages were forced to autoreconf because the Mac was still gaining popularity and a lot of source distributions didn't have ./configure scripts that supported this or that Mac-specific or MacPorts-specific functionality. So now you have to download and install whatever autotools you need to do autoreconf. And of course MacPorts ships a separate package for autoconf 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and individual packages can depend on specific major versions of autoconf, so even if you had an up-to-date autoconf 1.4 you're still getting an upgrade to autoconf 1.3 if your package happened to ask for it.

It was ugly. Homebrew's initial insistence on requiring the re-use of system packages cut down on flexibility (you can't get a new zlib, you have to wait for Apple to ship one) but greased a lot of wheels people did care about. But as time has gone by both systems have improved on their faults and are in a better place than before. This particular bug sucks for the people affected but I think that the Homebrew people will eventually figure this one out, even if it means making their system more MacPorts-like. Like they have been for the past ten years. ;)

lordgilman··on Changes to Homebrew adversely affect Python development
MacPorts is installing Python just fine here, fwiw. There's a package for each Python 3.x version so you can have whatever random versions you need installed. They can be used in virtualenvs easily and they don't break when you have to install an update for a 3.x.y release.

lordgilman··on Improving how we deploy GitHub
I really don't think this is a "fundamental notion in Git." They ship git-patch-id to do what you're trying to do and frequently used internal tools like git-cherry use it. It's also not a true statement for LKML-like workflows that are landing patches off of mailing lists with git-am or git-apply.

I'm sort of at the mercy of the WUSTL database, they only give one state for respondent and petitioner. I caught a few more cases with regex, but in the case of this one where the name of the case has only two states I didn't catch it.
