lonelappde··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
After digging in his heels repeatedly on Friday against a tidal wave of opposition, Ammon found a "how to apologize" book and banged out an apology, while still devoting paragraphs to defending his mistake and selling his origin myth. Even his well researched apologize reeks of narcissism not respect.
lonelappde··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
"we" can stream the music to each other. But not on Spotify.
lonelappde··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
Sex crime wasn't the half of it. He went to jail for racketeering using his music to fund violent crime, and he's only free to whine publicly about music now because he weaseled out of prison on medical release due to the pandemic. Society owes him nothing.

lonelappde··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
Another song feelS s quote relevant in light of this comment thread: "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you".

A racketeering rapist in a different country being delatformed isn't relevant to the President of Poland blocking criticism of his misbehavior from appearing in the media.

They have editorial independence. At most they have financial dependence.

And Trump's attack on VOA is failing because VOA is protected from him by law.

lonelappde··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
This person directly funded a violent criminal gang with his music revenues. Not just having sex on the side.
lonelappde··on Open Letter on “confidential” dealings in Facebook [GDPR] case
What gives Ireland the right to preempt every other European country in GDPR enforcement? That's a horrific conflict of interest.
lonelappde··on Most book clubs are doing it wrong (2017)
> can be difficult to become a member of a club if you didn't get in one at the right time.

That applies to all repeated social events, doesn't it?

Unless it is something that has an annual "new class", but that's also a "right time".

lonelappde··on Most book clubs are doing it wrong (2017)
Is that shared?

Also: why people to to college instead of just the library.
lonelappde··on All the Letters
You forgot where you were going:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

lonelappde··on In-person services may never operate strictly in-person again
Rear Window wasn't about how great it was to live in that apartment. It was about someone stuck in an apartment escaping by watching other people's apartments.
lonelappde··on In-person services may never operate strictly in-person again
There may be other solutions. What if instead of spending an hour commuting to the therapist, you spend half an hour ritually preparing your room for therapy? Hanging a curtain, switchin the lighting color, etc. What if you had a VR-CAVE-like projection system and you downloaded a "wallpaper" from your therapist for use in your session?
lonelappde··on With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
That's SNI for the article, but not Significant New Discussion in the comments.

I always wondered though, why not let these flamebait discussion topics stay up as a Honeypot to keep the other threads cleaner?

lonelappde··on With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
Take care not to conflate the "market" which applies when it benefits me over everyone else, with "fairness" which applies whenever it benefits me over everyone else.

Take care not to conflate the "market" which applies when it benefits me over everyone else, with "fairness" which applies whenever it benefits me over everyot else.
lonelappde··on New threat to the economy: Americans are saving like it's the 1980s
Can't eat money.

lonelappde··on New threat to the economy: Americans are saving like it's the 1980s
It's just as true to say that depositors create money or creditors create money. Perhaps more true to say that the FDIC creates money by insuring deposits.

The whole system creates money. And it's not some weird sort of stealing (unless a creditor defaults, of course), it's a lubricant and catalyst of economy, and why I don't have to maintain a herd of cows just for use in trading my computer software for your pickles. Money (currency) is only useful when it moves, so creating it is good for people.

Anyone can create money. If I write "IOU a chicken, redeemable by whoever holds this paper" on a sheet of paper, I just created money (but not US legal tender fiat currency)

lonelappde··on New threat to the economy: Americans are saving like it's the 1980s
Is that happening? USAmericans can't afford what they consume; the economics only add up when most the work is imported from subsistence workers and slaves.

(I almost said ”offshored" but Mexico and South America)

lonelappde··on Setting the story straight on quite a few issues
JWZ is a lot of things, but he's never claimed to be a nice person.
lonelappde··on Tuxedo Book BA15: AMD-only and Linux-preinstalled laptop
You've got it backwards.
lonelappde··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
I thought Google banned sideloading unapproved extensions on Windows and Mac.

lonelappde··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
Wouldn't a better solution be a pop-up that says "your browser has bad plug-ins. May I uninstall them for you?"
lonelappde··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
Step 3 doesn't happen usually. If it did, no one would be upset.
lonelappde··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
User friendly features are only incentivized in a competitive environment.

Until Firefox or Edge catches up in both performance and implementation compatibility to make Chrome-first sites work, extension support isn't incentivized

lonelappde··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
Is there a workaround for users? Old builds of Chromium?
lonelappde··on Why our economy may be headed for a decade of depression
Electricity is payment deferred during the pandemic.
lonelappde··on Pac-Man recreated with a GAN trained on 50k game episodes
How is that "not a physics engine"?
lonelappde··on Pac-Man recreated with a GAN trained on 50k game episodes
Game rules aren't copyrightable. The visuals are a copy but obviously fair use, and it's obviously trademark use, and Nvidia probably has a marketing partnership with NAMCO for this
lonelappde··on Pac-Man recreated with a GAN trained on 50k game episodes
OTOH if you told a current AI a ghost story it wouldn't be able to do anything useful with that info a pacman context.
