lonelappde··on Zoom plans to roll out strong encryption for paying customers
Free users should get time-budgets or group size limits or video resolution limits, not be spied on.
lonelappde··on Zoom plans to roll out strong encryption for paying customers
This is horrific. The surveillance state has infiltrated ACLU. How is such a brazenly anti-liberty person tolerated at the ACLU?

Even if you take his perspective, why is child porn OK in the enterprise?! Especially after Jeffrey Epstein?!

lonelappde··on Zoom plans to roll out strong encryption for paying customers
Why would it cost 75% premium?
lonelappde··on GPT-3: A Disappointing Paper?
Have they deployed a demo? It's hard to talk about something that no one can see.
lonelappde··on Apple Mail randomly becomes the frontmost application in macOS
This smells like a feature built 10+ years ago, before notifications existed in Mac OS X, that never got upgraded.

That's how apps "notified" back then.

lonelappde··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
Why not just migrate the resources?

Spin up new instances, load data from snapshots, get back to work.

lonelappde··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
Why do I need 30?

1 rack in a datacenter is plenty for a database backed web app with a million users.

lonelappde··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
IBM charged the customer for each server.
lonelappde··on A bug in macOS 10.15.5 impacts bootable backups
Is Time Machine or other backup tools affected too?
lonelappde··on Can 1/3 and 1/3 = 2/6? It seemed so
That's totally wrong. It's not OK to add ratios. It's OK to add populations.

You can't add 1/3 and 1/3 to get 2/6 if the first 1/3 was reduced from 3 of 9 and th second was 1/3. Well, you can, but that only works in the degenerate case where the items you add (actually, average) are equal and there's no point in adding in the first place.

Hmm? Highway means "public road" (and sometimes private) pretty much everywhere, legally, since before the US existed.

"Freeway" is the term for the kind of road that has "highway" in its official name. Also "parkway", from the era when there was more landscaping around freeways.

lonelappde··on HBO Max taking on Netflix with human curation instead of relying on algorithms
Disney+ with Hulu, Netflix, HBO, Apple+, Amazon Prime, Starz, adds up if you want full coverage.
lonelappde··on Google Profanity Words
Is this accurate? How is it tested?
lonelappde··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
Yes for Firefox mobile.
lonelappde··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
Did you like Google News content better? If not, why wasn't content quality a reason to switch before?
lonelappde··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
What about the URL bar?

For average non techie users, the URL bar isn't particularly helpful. They use page content. And AMP pages do show the original page domain name.

lonelappde··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
Correction:

The original URL is provided by the Share button on the right. But it's not a link. (To visit it, you'd have to copy and paste back into the browser. You can't share a link to the app you are shared from )

So the URL is available as always, but the link is not.

lonelappde··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
Why edit url? For non images, the original URL is in the page content.
lonelappde··on MasterClass is seizing its moment
Like Colbert's truthiness, MC is educationaliness. Infotainment.
lonelappde··on MasterClass is seizing its moment
The lesson to learn is that stardom is about branding (marketing/advertisers) and being the boss of workers, putting your name on it to fake authenticity and singular genius in what is a team effort.
lonelappde··on Software will eat software in a remote-first world
In 2002 the inventor of Microsoft Office (Charles Simonyi) took his $billions and left to create a company to replace programming with an Office-like app. In 2017 the company (Intentional) was acquihired back into MS after failing to generate a profit or popular product.
lonelappde··on Software will eat software in a remote-first world
Also, scammers using VOIP (plus extremely sensitive ADA rules around treating disabled people nicely and never doubting people who claimed disability) ruined the deaf-serving text-to-telephone gateway. Fortunately that problem was mostly solved by the Internet mostly killing voice phone.
lonelappde··on Software will eat software in a remote-first world
2001 was Mad OS X Cocoa. 2020 is JavaScript. The standard for UI was higher then, but was lost to the almighty god of cloud-based web apps.
lonelappde··on Software will eat software in a remote-first world
Even more simply, if something took a person year to write, it will take at least a person to maintain in perpettuity, as bits rot, especially after the profit authors disappear.
lonelappde··on Ask HN: Has anybody shipped a web app at scale with 1 DB per account?
You roll the feature out incrementally to the users who are ready. You build backwards compatible features. Basic software engineering.
lonelappde··on Hydroxychloroquine Update
defyccc is barely this side of Alex Jones with their conspiracy theorizing absurd caricatures:

They invented a theory that CO2 is called a "greenhouse gas" because farmers use CO2 in fertilizer, not because it increases temperature like a greenhouse and then without any source attribute that theory to climate scientists.

Because the Lancet has a bad reputation for publishing poor quality research:

Edit: I'm not saying denyccc is good! I'm pointing out that Lancet is bad too. Lancet has killed more people with its decade long defense of the Wakefield autism vaccine hoax than all the good it has done with its legitimate research.
