londgine··on The new toll to drive into Manhattan won't change much by itself
I was in London recently, and I noticed that there weren't too many vehicles, and even though roads had only one or two lanes per direction, there wasn't any traffic in the city center. I asked some locals why that was, and they said that the tube from the suburbs was fast and frequent, and it was expensive to bring your car into the city. I hope the streets of NY will calm down, and then they can even start closing lanes and turning them into larger sideways, bike lanes, or trees.
londgine··on Neopets is still around
I was young when neopets was big, so I didn't experience all of the aspects of the game. but I do remember that when signing up, it asked my age. After answering truthfully, I was told that I need my parents to sign a document for me to play. I obviously wasn't going to do that, so then I learned one of the most important things about the internet, it is okay to lie.
londgine··on Norway rolls back EV incentives while boosting walking and cycling (2022)
In Tel Aviv Israel it is normally 90 or higher and humid. A large portion of the locals commute to work with bike or e-mobility devices. Most offices have bike rooms and showers.
londgine··on Diamond prices are in free fall in one key corner of the market
$3k is a bit much for me to feel comfortable spending at a store well known for selling Chinese knockoffs. Is there a way for a layman to test that the stone is indeed a diamond, and not something like lab made cubic zirconia?
londgine··on New York is about to crack down on short-term rentals on September 5th
Either that, or simply built more (or in NY case, higher) apartments. There is obviously a demand for both short term rentals and for long term rentals. Rather than building enough housing, NY decides to ban one and give it to the other.

This solution reminds me of the "careful mate, this foreigner wants your cookie" comic https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2656977204337311&set=a...

londgine··on Conferences are inadvertently excluding many attendees from foreign countries
It's a power game. Presumably less Americans visit places that require visas since there are enough places that don't. So Americans may not want to go to Europe as much. Currently plenty of European tourists go to America, so maybe that doesn't bother them as much. Pick a third world country like Jamaica. Americans can go there visa free, and Jamaica wants Americans to continue to come, so it stays visa free. However Jamaicans require Visas to go to the US, because the US had decided that it doesn't need to encourage Jamaicans to come to the US, enough already do.
londgine··on Select Parts of the Bible for the Use of the Slaves in the British West-India
One thing that I remember learning was about one of the Mexican native tribes (I think Aztecs). After their entire army was defeated by a few hundred Spaniards, the general was annoyed that the natives fought, so they enslaved everyone and had them demolish every single building in the capital. The enslavement was so bad that soon after that 90% of the natives died. Imagine that after losing a war, your job was to work yourself to death in order to destroy your entire national legacy.
londgine··on Why Japan has so many ‘never travelers’
The problem with many trains is that you have to book a specific time (like with airplanes) or else the price rises significantly (like with planes). The price is almost more than air flight. And in the US, passenger trains have to wait for other types of trains, making them artificially slower.
londgine··on Evening Club Bridge Is Dying (2015)
But it was replaced by a chess club. I assume that similarly intelligent people play chess.
londgine··on Woman Is Awarded $1.2B in ‘Revenge Porn’ Lawsuit
Presumably there is no way he will pay the full amount. So what can he do? I guess he'll have all of his assets emptied and then he will only work in places that will pay him in cash. I know that fathers who don't pay child support can be placed in debtors prison, but I don't think he can. Maybe if he moves to a foreign country that is nice to expats, and not too nice to the US, he could work and save up money there (Maybe UAE).
londgine··on Evening Club Bridge Is Dying (2015)
I might be missing something, but what was wrong with the game bridge? Why did the leader of the nation hate it?
londgine··on Texas questions rights of a fetus after prison guard who had stillborn baby sues
Nope, in Texas it is also illegal to murder a baby. In fact, murdering a baby is more illegal than killing a fetus.
londgine··on Why This “Zero Calorie Sweetener” Isn’t Zero Calories
https://www.tictac.com/us/en/products/tic-tacr-mint-flavors-... Similarly, tic-tacs are labeled as having 0 grams of sugar even though they are nearly 100% sugar. That is because their chosen serving size is 1 tictac, and 1 tictac is 0.49 g, which is 0.01 g below the limit for reporting.
londgine··on Airbnb Hosting Isn’t What It Used to Be
The owner's house is outside of Orlando, in a gated community. When I go traveling, I want to be close to where there are things to do. If you are willing to spend so much to go to Disney world, I would assume you also are willing to spend the money to stay in Orlando.
londgine··on Airbnb Hosting Isn’t What It Used to Be
I don't know if it's just me, but Airbnb recently stopped working for me on chrome. A partial website would load, with the basic images of a property, but I was never able to load more. I later discovered that Firefox works, so I use that, but not before planning my previous trip with booking.com . That was when I realized just how bad Airbnb's search is. With booking.com you can take an area of a map and sort by total price. With Airbnb you can only sort by price per night. but with cleaning fees varying a lot, that is pretty useless information.
londgine··on The time SUSE, the German Linux company, banned mentioning Jewish holidays
While this does look like a biased one sided post, a year passed and I couldn't find any response from SUSE. So I'm guessing that there is a lot of truth behind this. Although I'm not quite convinced that this is antisemitism, but rather anti-non-christian. I suspect that a similar post wishing Muslims a happy Ramadan would be taken down.
londgine··on USB-C Confirmed for the iPhone 15
USB C was designed in 2014. How did you have it on your Samsung device in 2010?
londgine··on USB-C Confirmed for the iPhone 15
Look inside the USB c port. Do you see a little bar sticking out, that is the breakable part
londgine··on USB-C Confirmed for the iPhone 15
The correct orientation perpendicularly to the edge of the phone. No one gets exactly 90 deg. The more you are off, the more likely you are to break or wear down something. That something that breaks is in the phone, not in the cable.
londgine··on USB-C Confirmed for the iPhone 15
I've had issues with my past 2 usb c phones. the female connector has a hidden male part in the phone. when you insert the cable incorrectly, it can damage that internal male part. it is much harder to replace that part then just getting a new cable. the lighting cable was a classic male connector to a classic female part
londgine··on YouTube will now show a blank homepage if you don’t have watch history on
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/df-tube-distractio... I use this addon because I was sick of the clickbait and nsfw homepage videos that I would get on incognito. I guess after this update I won't need it.
londgine··on Booking a Ryanair flight via an online travel agent might hold a nasty surprise
I used to like booking though kiwi, but last time I booked with them, I wanted to add a suitcase later, and I was unable to add it through the airlines website, since kiwi refused to expose what email address they used. The only way to add a suitcase was through their site, but that cost more than double.
londgine··on Visa-free travel to Europe for U.S. citizens to end in 2024,requiring ETIAS form
it's a document that needs to be prepared ahead of time, costs money, and can be denied. what is your definition of a visa if not this?
londgine··on Israeli democracy is fighting for its life – Yuval Harari
How else could it have been done? If the knesset passed a law saying that in 1 year the reasonability clause would be removed, would you be perfectly okay with that?
londgine··on Israeli democracy is fighting for its life – Yuval Harari
Using a bad tool for a good cause is still bad. Let's say that the Knesset wants to lower the SC salary, but the SC thinks that that salary is "unreasonably" low for the lifestyle that they deserve. Then they can simply cancel that law. And unlike with politicians, if the people think that that is a bad decision, they can't impeach any of them, nor can they have any influence into who the new justices will be.
londgine··on Israeli democracy is fighting for its life – Yuval Harari
I've been following the situation in Israel, and I don't understand why the reasonability clause is something good to have in the first place. If a law is being passed, the SC could overrule it by simply saying that it is unreasonable. That sounds like an awful reason. Now the SC has to actually show which of the basic laws the proposed law contradicts. This is how it works in the US, and that makes sense to me. What am I missing?
londgine··on IRS moves forward with a new free-file tax return system
I hope this will work for expats. America doesn't allow changing residency, and annulling citizenship costs upward of $1,000. Yet we have to pay taxes, and to avoid being double taxed in everything (but still double taxes in some) you have to use expensive tax software to file your taxes.
londgine··on Couples with joint checking accounts are happier
I have a question regarding a prenup. Maybe people here have good ideas. I know someone (she) who inherited a house in a hcol area. When getting married they made a prenup so that she would keep ownership of the house. They also had separate accounts but lived together and spit the bills, an otherwise happy marriage. Then came a time, after both of them earned some money that they wanted to renovate the house. That caused some issues, because if the house is completely her's, should he chip in for renovations? Together they have enough money for renovations, but she herself doesn't. They will obviously both benefit from the renovations, and he is willing to chip in. But I don't know what would be a good solution. Obviously this is someone else, so I won't get too involved, but I'm going to get married soon, and things like this make a prenup look like it doesn't solve problems, rather replaces problems with other problems.
londgine··on Twitter refuses to pay arbitration costs for 891 laid-off workers, lawsuit says
bankruptcy lawyers know how to get paid even when the company doesn't even have enough money for their debters and investors.
londgine··on WI governor gets creative with veto, increases school funding for 400 years
That sounds awful. Either a law should be passed so that the executive branch can enforce and make laws, or they should remove the Frankenstein veto.
