loloquwowndueo··on Exploiting Volvo/Eicher's fleet platform to gain control over all users/vehicles
How so? Sources?
loloquwowndueo··on How to Block Some of the Bots
Just a personal blog, and I have to admit it had a misconfiguration that was my fault - nonexistent urls would redirect to the index. Still, dumb scraper bots would 1) not realize there was a redirect loop and kept trying every possible url, and 2) they were doing so aggressively enough that it brought the site down a couple of times. A well-behaved crawler would have slowed down and noticed the loop, never had issues with crawlers for years until the advent of ai.

> WordPress with a cache can handle on the order of 1k requests per second on the cheapest VPS money can buy. An actual proper static site would likely 10x that.

Yes we know - I still had my site knocked out a couple of times by overeager bots. They can be really abusive.

Lotus symphony.
loloquwowndueo··on Zero roadkill as Amazon canopy bridges secure 15,000 crossings
No. Works predated Office by 3 years at least. The first versions of Works ran under ms-dos.
loloquwowndueo··on Zero roadkill as Amazon canopy bridges secure 15,000 crossings
Microsoft doesn’t belong in this list after they trademarked Windows, Word, Works (remember, Microsoft Works is an oxymoron) and others.
loloquwowndueo··on NPM's release cooldown is security theater
Depending on those vaunted “security researchers” to take point and find all vulnerabilities in all packages is also fairly naive. That process costs money and produces a fairly valuable result - why would they give it away for free? So this will inevitably evolve into targeting only the high-value most popular packages and the exploiters will retreat to the long tail of less-popular ones. Lower payoff? Sure, but beats zero payoff.

I have zero astigmatism and dark mode is hard to read as letters look all blurry.

Not 100% independent then. You still depend on your isp.

There’s no obvious way to switch to normal (aka “light”) mode. Dark mode is very difficult for some people (me included) to read.

If you must default to dark mode that’s your choice but I’d love to see a light mode toggle somewhere prominent.

Thanks! I’m clearly not aware.
loloquwowndueo··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
It’s interesting that you mention Garmin - they’re a good example of pivoting from your original market (standalone gps units for cars) once you see a nimble competitor eating away at it (gps-enabled smartphones). Garmin would be dead if they had held fast on the standalone GPS market.

Disable JavaScript. A site abuses its privilege to execute code in your browser? Take the privilege away. Extensions like uBlock or no script can do this.
loloquwowndueo··on CD sales growth outpaced vinyl in the first half of 2026
> Vinyl records are still too hard to put on

Nonsense. Me and my bro happily put records of fairy tales and Disney movie adaptations back in the 80s on our crappy portable record player (don’t you dare call this thing a turntable). Harder than a cd? For sure. Too hard for a 5 year old? Certainly not, as long as you don’t mind the record itself facing some rough handling. Which they survived just fine, anyway.

What’s your beef? The name? Because I’ve been super happy with porkbun but damn, that name… and then the official-sounding ones like network solutions are quite shady. don’t judge a registrar by its name I guess.

Ew at the bit about letting AI write your commit messages. Don’t bother - if you didn’t take the time to write it why should anyone take the time to read it. I’ll just ask my AI to extract the intent from the actual code if I need it.

loloquwowndueo··on How to Write an Email
Default structure

Subject: [Action, Decision, Update, Risk]: [topic]

[First sentence: the ask or punchline.]

[Two to five lines of facts, with names, numbers, and dates.]

[Recommendation or next step.]

[Owner and deadline.]

Dollars to donuts the next generation of AI models will use this template as is, humans will forget to replace the placeholders and you’ll start getting a ton of emails with some of the placeholders verbatim.

loloquwowndueo··on The great blogging collapse: What happened to 100 successful blogs?
I mean sure but is your wiki public? If not, that’s one extra step to access your content. If it’s public then it’s basically a blog right?
loloquwowndueo··on The great blogging collapse: What happened to 100 successful blogs?
Dunno man, sometimes I blog stuff I want to remember (how to do task X or Y, some arcane ffmpeg incantation, recipes, etc) and when I need it, it’s easier to find it in my public blog which is accessible from anywhere, vs. it being a file buried in some computer I have to sit in front of, or somewhere in a shared drive I have to authenticate to, etc.

For some things there is value in them being publicly accessible even if nobody but me cares or uses them.

That’s still running on a server.

(Sorry, I guess “serverless” is not a buzzword I’ll ever understand)
