loloquwowndueo··on DHS is using obscure law to snoop on journalists, non-profits, unions
Sweet summer child.
loloquwowndueo··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
lol windows doesn’t need AI to be the dumpster fire it’s always been
loloquwowndueo··on 25,000 Lbs. Of Chicken Products Recalled in 5 States: USDA
I wonder who they’re going to blame and tariff for this.
loloquwowndueo··on Get your Windows license refund
You can but the price is the same.
loloquwowndueo··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
I’d have sympathy for the pre-Microsoft GitHub. For the thing they are now, backed by a top-5 company with trillions of dollars? Cry me a river.
loloquwowndueo··on It's Not the End of Programming
You don’t have to wait! Quit and go do something else!
loloquwowndueo··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You say it like a 35% approval rating is a good thing. It is not.
loloquwowndueo··on IBM Simon (1994): the original smartphone, explained in its own ad [video]
Ahh correct, I forgot about that. And do I remember correctly that Handspring was founded by ex-Palm employees to produce PDAs with licensed PalmOS and a cellular modem/phone built in?
loloquwowndueo··on IBM Simon (1994): the original smartphone, explained in its own ad [video]
Psions were PDAs, not really in the smartphone arena until their OS (EPOC?) became Symbian and started appearing on Nokia phones.

Same for Palm - it wasn’t until the Treo series that they started trying to make inroads in the smartphone field.

I had both Palm PDAs (a V and a tungsten 3) and a psion (diamond Mako), fun times with portable computers.

loloquwowndueo··on Incident with Pull Requests and Issues – Resolved
Generosity lol. They get a ton out of GitHub, not the least being all that sweet sweet code to train their AIs on.
loloquwowndueo··on How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story
Laser printers were expensive AF for poor guys just out of college looking for a job.

My BJ200 ca. 1993 had awesome print quality, comparable to a Laserjet II, if you used slightly glossy paper (so the ink wouldn’t bleed) and you waited a bit for the ink to dry on each sheet.

loloquwowndueo··on How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story
Chewy! Yay
loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Glad you went for this analogy. It’s like an AI producing a board with a beach umbrella nailed on it and four wheels, and saying “meh it’s good enough for transportation, human car designers are doomed”. It’s functional, right?
loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
> There is no such thing as "correct" style and architecture. You should know that if you have 31 years of experience.

And you should know that this is not accurate. But at this point this has devolved into a dick measuring contest, which I refuse to do. Have a good day.

loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
AI is like eating cardboard.
loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I’ve been programming professionally for 31 years. With all those guardrails it writes functional code - but I would still not call it good. But hey to each their own.
loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Analyzing? No. It’s just being sycophantic. Try it on code that’s actually correct - it’ll go all “oh you’re absolutely right” and wreck it anyway.
loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
It’s really good at writing bad code - something that superficially works but is badly architected, abstracted, or wrong in a subtle way.

Only a novice would look at ai code and say “wow this is good”.

loloquwowndueo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
It’s likely it missed some crucial subtlety that will come to bite you in the ass down the line.

That’s the thing with AI - its responses sound plausible enough to non-experts but time and time again I see experts in any given field being able to identify AI content by pinpointing subtle but crucial errors. That’s one of its dangers - it gives you enough confidence to shoot yourself in the foot.

loloquwowndueo··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
First word of the alert : EARTHQUAKE. What do you do?

There are no tsunamis in Mexico City haha

loloquwowndueo··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
You always need to act on it. Get an earthquake alert? Run outside. You can go back if it was a false alert.

In Mexico City the seismic alert gives like a minute (sensors are on the coast off Guerrero 350km away). Communities closer to the usual epicenter get almost no warning.

loloquwowndueo··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
Get off my lawn.
loloquwowndueo··on Where was Mythos when WordPress fell?
https://wp2shell.com/

But the phrase/meme is this: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/where-was-gondor-when-the-wes...

So it’s just something rhetorical, “Wordpress fell” is probably an exaggeration for dramatic / meme fitting purposes.

Btw I googled all this, didn’t use ai even. You could have too!

loloquwowndueo··on Show HN: I'm a 15 Year Old Wannabe Engineer, This Is a Cycloidal Gearbox I Built
Being pedantic, in many countries, engineering disciplines are regulated and you can’t officially call yourself an engineer until you’ve complied with some requirements etc.

So there’s kind of a guild in many places.

loloquwowndueo··on The Cold Email
I’d rather see neither but if I must choose, formal it is.

I ignore cold emails anyway.

loloquwowndueo··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
Sorry for my crappy phrasing! I mean in the current building spree for AI, not in general.
loloquwowndueo··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
USA is not building anything. Private companies are. And unlike regular infrastructure projects (housing, transportation, energy) this won’t really benefit the public at large when it’s done. It’ll just enable companies to churn out more slop, faster, and reel us further in.

Or to put it another way, a semiconductor, car or airplane factory wouldn’t really count as “infrastructure”, would they?

loloquwowndueo··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
Do you have any cameras that support openipc you’d recommend?

I need surveillance cameras (outdoor mostly) but the cheap ones I found are a horrid proprietary mess. I even bought and returned one after the setup was complex and invasive.

Basically all I need is access to the live stream from a raspberry pi where I can store and process the video.

loloquwowndueo··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
Ortholinear, surely?

Which one do you use/have now?

loloquwowndueo··on KOReader
You must have a newer kindle. Koreader was basically my best bet once mine (2012 vintage) stopped being supported by Amazon. Native epub support plus other goodies. I’m sure you’re aware that emailing an epub to your kindle converts it to mobi before sending, potentially mucking up the formatting.
