lol636363··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
Here is a more balant racism experience I had. On a date night, we sat next to another couple. The guy was really not happy, he started talking just loud enough for us to hear that Trump will round up all Muslims and immigrants and ship them out. Then he started singing that his cousin is Navy Seal and he likes to kill Iraqis, Afghanis, and all the dities. His date kept telling him to shut up. He asked waitress to change tables, I think.

We tried our best to ignore and have a good evening. This is the only incident in last 4 years but never experienced anything like this before especially in upscale restaurants.

Mostly attitude changes. Like if our group of mostly brown people with kids is at a festival, security gaurds or cops would all of sudden hangout next to us. We would just laugh it off and cops are not rude or anything. But I rarely noticed cops hanging out near us when we are in mostly white group.

Another thing, a little worse service especially at upscale suburban resturants. Now brown/desi people are known to be cheap when it comes to tips, so that does have some effect on the service. However, before 2016, we rarely got bad/slow service. But it seems we had more issues at resturants in last 4 years than before. (Btw I always tip decent 20% standard and more depending on the service)

From cool I meant people now openly sterotype minorities especially on Facebook. Both young and old. Like friends complaining that they didn't get a job because company was trying to hire a black woman. And, in fact, I have heard from multiple of my Republican friends that a Black Woman is the most powerful person in the US. (Ofc, I don't believe that)

lol636363··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
Policy wise he probably didn't make any bad decisions. But his words have made it okay to be racist. As a minority, I experienced more minor forms of racism in last 4 years than in last 20 years before. He made it cool to be racist. He made my life slightly more inconvenient. And I am sure if I didn't had high paying job I would have suffered more balant racism. Trump is evil human and I am glad he will gone soon enough.
lol636363··on Leaders focus on doing the right thing, managers focus on doing things right
It seems most managers just want a thing done. It is really engineers who do the thing right.
lol636363··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
There are a lot of stories of people paying for Google Services getting locked out too.

Personal experience, once I created an Adword ad using one of the image that Google Ad creator had suggested. It was nothing, just a woman in bikini. It was approved and then rejected with warning that I violated their guidelines. I wanted protest but thought probably not worth it. This could have perma banned me from Google, I stopped using AdWords.

lol636363··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
This is the post I needed to start cutting out Google as much as possible. Not because I want to go 100% Google free but having too many Google services means that you are more likely to inadvertently violate one of their terms.

1. Remove Google Analytics and Adsense. Especially Adsense seems high risk.

2. Remove free apps from Play Store

3. Stop uploading public videos on YouTube

4. Stop sharing files through Google Drive

5. Use only my own domain for emails that are forwarded to Gmail.

6 Stop storing passwords in Chrome.

Only reason I want to keep Google is for Gmail, calendar, Nest Thermostats, Nest Doorbell.

Photos are already backed up in Apple Photos in addition to Google Photos.

lol636363··on Intake of saturated fatty acids and risk of coronary heart disease
That was my first thought that wine drinkers tend to richer, so live longer. But when I looked deeper, those studies actually controlled for various factors including income and education.
lol636363··on Ask HN: When and why do you choose to use a desktop client vs. a web client?
I prefer web clients because I don't want bloatware on PC. Only when desktop client has some feature that I really need and I trust the company, then I install desktop client.
lol636363··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
Knowingly buying stolen property is illegal and may result in jail time.

Unknowingly buying stolen property still comes with a risk that if LE ever find it, they can take it away from you without compensating you.

I had my TV stolen and sold to a pawn shop. Detectives found it at local pawn shop and they recovered it for me. These laws exist so that when one is engaged in business, they have to do reasonable due diligence that they are not dealing with stolen or illegal goods.

lol636363··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
This is not collective punishment. There are already laws where children have to give up inheritance because it was created with illegal activities. There are laws against illegal dumping of dangerous chemicals. It is not too far fetched idea that existing laws can be used to recover some of damages caused by this.
lol636363··on Ask HN: What was your “Fuck this shit I'm out” moment?
Yes
lol636363··on We studied what happens when guys add their cats to their dating app profiles
Yes, women seems to be attracted to guys with dogs. As a guy, I have a dog, every time I take him out to dog park without my wife, I get hit on.

But dogs are so much work and they are needy. If I had to do over, I would get a cat. My friends with cat can take wknd trip without taking or boarding their cats. Sometimes, they have no idea where their cat is.

My guess is having a dog is not about masculinity but it shows that this guy can handle responsibility and needs of others.

lol636363··on Friends/family are getting destroyed by Covid conspiracies its pissing me off
People believe first then look for proofs.

I know people who still refuse to believe that the earth is spehere. Especially, when religon is involved they won't even believe their own eyes. Someone actually said that the way universe appear is because God is testing us.

But you can convince them by making them feel good and hit on their emotions. It feels dirty salesy marketing bs. But apparently it works on us.

I have been telling some conspiracy theories to help some friends. I don't think they believe me, i wish i can make cool videos. The theory I say is that COVID19 is made by government to save money on social security. Wearing masks is messing up the government plans so that's why they are so against it. Etc.

lol636363··on Ask HN: What was your “Fuck this shit I'm out” moment?
Wasn't there a thread recently about Glassdoor hiding negative reviews if companies pay up for advertising.
lol636363··on Effects of Time-Restricted Eating on Weight Loss and Other Metabolic Parameters
That's what I said.

Calorie as a measure sets upper limit of maximum energy you can extract from a given food. If you want to gain 1lb of weight, you will need to eat at least 3500 calories. If you want lose 1lb, you have create deficits of at least 3500 cals.

lol636363··on Effects of Time-Restricted Eating on Weight Loss and Other Metabolic Parameters
No, all calories are same. This is in the domain of physics or chemistry.

But of course if you get all your calories from simple carbs, you will be deficient in other important nutrients like vitamins.

However, deficiency of certain nutrients may cause body to slow down or increase metabolic rate.

lol636363··on Cameras and secret trackers reveal where Amazon returns end up
30% seems really high. And I say that as someone who returns items more than most of my friends. My estimate is about 3-4% of items that I have returned over last 15 years of online shopping. And my friends think that is too high and guilt me for abusing the system. But maybe I should not feel as guilty.

The reasons I return items is usually false advertising. I used to spend hours reading reviews and product specs before buying. But now I don't have time to sift through reviews. And of course, fake reviews make it harder.

So all I got is maker's ads and if ads are lying then I don't feel guilty returning an item.

It seems most people have an attitude that if a buyer got duped with false advertisements then it is buyer's fault.

lol636363··on IBM is splitting itself into two public companies
You don't need MBA to have MBA mindset. A lot of computer science grads use their degree to get foot in the door and then move into management positions.

At IBM, to do anything you need to get permissions from 5 different semi-tech approvers. They have not done any real work in a while but read a few blog posts and come up with their own policies that contradicts each other. It is a pita to want to produce high quality code.

And that is just middle management. All those people higher up can define tech words but hardly anyone can actually explain the definition of those tech terms.

lol636363··on Ask HN: People who stick to Windows, why?
Trading softwares. But I use VPS and RDP.
lol636363··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
Just want to add some more context. When I say she is liberal, she is indeed liberal. Her feed is full of BLM and LGBTQ causes. She has made donations to many of such causes too. She is the nicest person and worries about other people's issues. Gets really sad if there is a sad event in news, no matter where.

I think the problem is people have certain blindspots. Media can help you see these spots. That's why she is hyper aware of causes that the American media cares about.

In terms of caste, she grew up with certain beliefs but it is not something American media has shed any light on it.

She watches Bollywood movies but don't think they watch anything else from India. And I don't really see Bollywood dealing with caste issues seriously.

That's why she doesn't even understand the question when I ask why caste is so important. Also my wife stops me before I can dig any deeper.

lol636363··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
Unfortunately, no. My wife's best friend is Hindu from Upper Caste. (Brahim) she was born in the United States.

She always been so liberal and open minded. Most of her friends are Muslims. She is barely religious.

But whenever it comes relationships, she brings up caste. She married into upper caste, she was very worried about caste of the guy. If her sister is dating a someone from a different caste, she brings it up and says something like that dating him is like dating a Muslim man. You will not marry him, just have fun. She talks about it with us as if it is totally normal.

Then one of her husband's friend is lower caste Hindu who converted to Christianity. She uses deragotry terms (Malloo?) for him when he is not around.

While I haven't had any deep conversation with her about caste but few times when I asked why she obesses over it, she says it is not just caste but totally different culture. Which to me sounds bullshit.

lol636363··on A brown man laying down on NYC subway floor, helped by white guys
As a brown immigrant, I have known many brown people who assume that all white people are racist. It would be shocking to them if a white person helps them.

Not saying this applies to you and it is good to share these stories in our communities.

lol636363··on Tell HN: My HN app is rejected by Apple for showing Covid-related submissions
This is one the reason why I am glad I do web development instead of mobile apps.
lol636363··on Ask HN: How have you successfully managed upwards?
Product Owner
lol636363··on Ask HN: What technology to chose for a web app in 2020?
You can keep backend in Django and switch frontend to Vuejs
lol636363··on Law allows police to seize and sell cars of non-lawbreakers, keeping proceeds
In another case, they took family's car because teenage daughter was driving under influence. How is parents to control their children when they borrow family car.
lol636363··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
Thanks!
lol636363··on Ask HN: Is a SaaS provider expected to have a trademark in every country?
Also if you are able to successfully trademark Transistor FM and then sue transistor.fm, the suit is unlikely to go anywhere since transistor.fm can easily show they have been using that domain before your trademark. And you may also lose it. Disclaimer IANAL.
lol636363··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
Sounds amazing but it might be hard to focus. In my country, there is no pension. Healthcare is an issue, my wife works for hospital but my health insurance is so much better than hers. We will switch to hers but this pandemic make us a little nervous.
lol636363··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
I really tried to dedicate myself to my day job but I work in a large IT corp where most people are apathetic to their jobs. Even my managers told me to take it easy, And that's when I tried my best to accept the culture and save my mental energy for personal projects.
