lokl··on New Concerning Variant: B.1.1.529
According to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard, as of now, Sweden has had 15,145 deaths; Norway has had 1,050 deaths; Denmark 2,863; Finland 1,309. With populations from Wikipedia (10,402,070 for Sweden; 5,402,171 for Norway; 5,850,189 for Denmark; 5,536,146 for Finland), this yields deaths per 1,000 people of:

Sweden 1.456 Norway 0.194 Denmark 0.489 Finland 0.236

Saying Sweden has "just survived" doesn't capture these numbers well, I think. If this is "embarrassing" for anyone, it's Sweden, but I wouldn't use the word embarrassing. It's tragic.

lokl··on Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry?
No, I steam mine. For 22 lb, 2:10 at 400 °F on a rack above water in a foil-sealed tray. Cooks fast, difficult to dry out if you overcook it. I remove the skin first, cover in an herb-olive oil paste. If you want crispy skin, I suppose you could cook it separately (cracklings).
lokl··on Hetzner Apple Mac Mini Offering
I moved personal projects to Hetzner from Linode several years ago, due to significantly better pricing for the RAM I needed, and I haven't had any problems. I am using a few of their "cloud" shared servers (https://www.hetzner.com/cloud) and backups, can't speak to other services. I'm not doing anything CPU or IO intensive, though.
lokl··on Cloudflare R2 storage: Rapid and reliable object storage, minus the egress fees
Thanks, I am familiar with Pages, but I would like to know whether R2 can also be used for this purpose, in a similar fashion as S3.
lokl··on Cloudflare R2 storage: Rapid and reliable object storage, minus the egress fees
Can you use R2 to host a static website as easily as you can with S3?
lokl··on Ask HN: Desktop Robotic Arm?
Thanks, but it looks like this does not have 6DoF.
lokl··on Ask HN: Desktop Robotic Arm?
Likewise, your comment should have more upvotes. This is a very interesting approach.
lokl··on Ask HN: Desktop Robotic Arm?
Looks like it might meet my needs, thank you!
lokl··on Ask HN: Desktop Robotic Arm?
Thank you and good luck with the RBX1 Remix, looks interesting.
lokl··on Ask HN: Desktop Robotic Arm?
Thank you, this seems like a very important point. Which arms did you use (if you're comfortable sharing)?
lokl··on Ask HN: Desktop Robotic Arm?
Thank you, DIY options are attractive because of price, and it's impressive there are even 6DoF projects, but many seem to lack the repeatability I am after (or their repeatability isn't clearly stated). If you have personal experience with one, I would be interested to hear about it.

lokl··on GitHub Copilot regurgitates valid secrets
Training on code that unintentionally has vulnerabilities is a problem, but I'm even more worried about bad actors intentionally putting code with vulnerabilities on GitHub with the hope that it will become training data. Bad actors might learn how to disguise code to sneak it into Copilot (if disguise is even necessary) and introduce backdoors, etc. It could be especially dangerous because of the "stamp of approval" Copilot has from GitHub/Microsoft. People who would not copy/paste code from the web might feel a false sense of security using Copilot.
lokl··on GitHub Copilot regurgitates valid secrets
When I say "malicious code," what I really mean is some well-known patterns of malicious code, not all malicious code in general. Just like we are surprised about "secrets" being regurgitated when we mean "API keys."
lokl··on GitHub Copilot regurgitates valid secrets
In light of this, unless there is evidence to the contrary, I'm going to assume it will also regurgitate malicious code.
lokl··on GitHub scraped your code. And they plan to charge you
How does Copilot avoid training on malicious code? There might be bad actors who would love to have their code scraped for this...
lokl··on Another 0-day looms for many Western Digital users
There's no indication EasyStore is affected, right? Assuming not using any WD Backup software.
lokl··on Show HN: Multiverse.plus – what if blogging was more collage-like and colorful?
I like your goal "to make 'blogging' more expressive and visual, possibly to break a piece off and reboot it, now that it's fallen out of fashion." I have the impression that, with some of your other projects, Kicks, you are trying to do this for all the web, not just blogging.

However, for my taste, this feels a little too close to Tumblr, which I don't think achieves "expressive and visual" in a deep sense. I hope that you will continue to explore and find more ways to differentiate yourself.

Misc. feedback:

I like how you present small blocks of text, but large blocks of text seem cramped sometimes, difficult to read.

The backgrounds are killing me. Perhaps, each background could have a solid-color fallback and readers could toggle to only display the solid fallbacks?

"Composed on today" -> "Composed today" (likewise for "yesterday")

I hope this doesn't come across as negative. What you're doing is very interesting to me and I look forward to seeing where it goes. It just hasn't fully achieved your stated goal, yet, in my opinion.

lokl··on Ask HN: Anybody Started a Research Institute?
Have you considered using the facilities and proximity to academic infrastructure to host academic conferences instead of full-time research? That might be a more realistic way to attract top talent when you are first starting. You would obviously want to do this in discussion with relevant nearby academic institutions, but being able to offer free accommodations for attendees + maybe some travel expenses could help to lure people for a week event, and a conference with the right attendees coming together can definitely benefit academic research.

A similar option would be to host classes or seminars on cutting edge research, taught by one or a few top researchers and attended by post-docs. Not full-time, but a way to start.

If researchers find it beneficial, if it's a conducive environment and the financials are right, if you master the role of "host," then you might be able to increase the number of conferences/seminars per year and, eventually, with a high-enough frequency, add full-time support staff and longer-term functionality (e.g., researcher-in-residence) that can lead to year-round activity.

Maybe this is a slow approach, but even one well-run conference can be beneficial and you'll be able to learn how to do this and make connections along the way.

lokl··on Ask HN: How would you store 10PB of data for your startup today?
You wrote, "data needs to be accessible at all time ... less than 1000ms" latency, but this does not tell the whole story about accessibility/latency. Does your use case allow you to do something similar to lazy loading, where you serve reduced quality images/video at low latency and only offer the full quality on demand/as needed with greater latency? For example, initially serve a reduced-resolution or reduced-length video instead of the full-res/full-length original, which you keep in colder storage at a reduced cost? Depending on the details of what is permissible and data characteristics, this approach might save you a lot overall by reducing warm storage costs.
lokl··on How People Get Rich Now
How People Find Fulfillment Now

The post we actually need. I want to know about innovations in this space. Who has a disruptive way to bring fulfillment to lives at scale, using blockchain or whatever other buzzwords you need to attract investment. Because that's what's actually worth investing in. If you're starting a company to get rich, you're missing out on life.

lokl··on How much Polish is there in Yiddish and how much Yiddish is there in Polish?
Prussian and Austrian areas were not part of the Pale. Pale was a subset of the Russian Empire.
lokl··on How much Polish is there in Yiddish and how much Yiddish is there in Polish?
This is false. "Pale of Settlement" refers to part of the Russian Empire and, while some of what is today Poland was then controlled by the Russian Empire, other parts of Poland were under Prussian or Austrian control (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partitions_of_Poland).

lokl··on Interview with CEO of rsync.net: “no firewalls and no routers”
Thanks for sharing this.
lokl··on Show HN: LitiHolo – a desktop 3D hologram printer that makes true holograms
Very interesting, but the 1 mm hogel size is a bit disappointing. Do you think you can improve this? How much?
lokl··on Interview with CEO of rsync.net: “no firewalls and no routers”
I wish I had a personal use case where the pricing of rsync.net made sense. It looks like a great service. For now, I use Backblaze Unlimited. I realize they are not the same service, but Backblaze works for my personal stuff and the price is great.
lokl··on Explore the Bayeux Tapestry Online
I recently saw the tapestry in person and highly recommend the experience even if you are not very interested in this time period, region, or tapestry/embroidery (as my companions were not). Probably the best museum audio guide that I have ever heard and the object that most benefits from having an audio guide.

Watermelon.

"Average color" is not really what I want.
