loganmarchione··on Audiobookshelf: Self-hosted audiobook and podcast server
If you're not looking to sail the high seas, I highly recommend Libro.fm. They have had almost any audiobook I have ever wanted (e.g., Andy Weir's books in English are only available on Audible), and you can choose a local library to support with your purchase.

I subscribe to their monthly plan, $14.99/month, which gets me 1 credit per month. If you buy one audiobook a month that's $14.99, using that credit, it pays for itself. I really like using my credits on expensive audiobooks, like $25 or something (I'm basically getting the book at a discount) and then I buy cheaper audiobooks using my credit card.

You can stream your purchased books with their app, but I download the files (everything is DRM-free) and move them into Audiobookshelf. Most of their older books are just ZIP downloads of MP3s, but newer books come in M4B format (one large file with chapter markers). Both work flawlessly with Audiobookshelf.

If you buy an audiobook on Audible (e.g., Andy Weir), you can download the AAX file from Audible and use a converter to convert the file to M4B (this strips the DRM and makes it work with Audiobookshelf). This is in a legal gray-area, depending on your jurisdiction.

loganmarchione··on Popular Linux orgs Freedesktop and Alpine Linux are scrambling for new webhost
So far, the Equinix Metal shutdown affects Freedesktop, Alpine, WireGuard, and Flathub. Why can't these organizations use VMs? Is there something special about bare-metal services, or has Equinix not offered their VM service to these organizations?
loganmarchione··on Tinystatus: A tiny status page generated by a Python script
Asking because I genuinely don't know, but why not use Python's `urllib.request` instead of `ping`?
loganmarchione··on Tinystatus: A tiny status page generated by a Python script
Man, this is cool! I would love if each tile would be clickable! I have a homelab and this would be a great landing page to be able to give out to family to see the status and links to all services in the house.

loganmarchione··on Elegant open source project tracking, Trello like but self-hosted
I switched to Planka after Focalboard went community-supported[1], but failed to appoint any community leaders. So far, I'm very happy with Planka for my needs at home.

There are more self-hosted options in this link[2].

loganmarchione··on Firefox on the brink?
Mozilla also just posted their State of Mozilla 2022 (this includes financial statements). From what I've read, it seems that expenses are up and revenue from search deals is down.

Genuine question. What is justifying Mozilla Corporation CEO Mitchell Baker's salary?

What problems did you have?

I've stuck with InfluxDB v1.8. I dislike the new Flux language. I know there is a way to do InfluxQL queries using InfluxDB v2, but I haven't set it up yet.

loganmarchione··on Ask HN: Is having a personal blog/brand worth it for you?
Definitely! I think it comes down to a few things:

1. You need the same username/handle on all platforms (e.g., your domain name, your twitter name, your github name, etc...). This is easier if you have a weird name.

2. You need to consistently update your content on these platforms (e.g., no one will care if you have a blog with a single post from 10 years ago)

3. You need to identify a reason for the blog (e.g., is it for work, or is it for fun?) and know your audience.

4. Your "brand" lets you control what people see when they Google you. However, if you're trying for a more professional appearance, don't blog about politics, religion, etc... because you'll be bound to upset someone at some point. Also, don't write controversial Twitter posts.

I've been blogging for almost 10 years now [1]. I only write a few articles per year, but they're always about things I'm working on. I work in IT and try to apply things I learn at work to my "homelab", and then write about it. This actually landed me a DevOps job because they saw that I used Ansible, Terraform, Docker, etc... and was proficient enough to write about those tools. When I asked in the interview, they mentioned my blog and github content as reasons why I was chosen over other candidates.

I personally use Jeff Geerling [2] as my inspiration. His "brand" has blown up recently, and while I'm not trying to get YouTube famous, I think he has great posts, creates great public code (ansible playbooks and docker containers), etc...

PS - I also blog using Hugo on a VPS. I run Debian server and let unattended-upgrades do my maintenance. I use a GitHub action to publish my code to the VPS, so once I commit, I'm done.

loganmarchione··on Nginx Modern Reference Architectures
I don't think any large corporations are using Caddy. Everywhere I've worked has used Nginx for any high-traffic applications.

As a side note, I'm looking at Traefik in my homelab and it's honestly difficult because I'm so comfortable with Nginx.

OP here. Yes, I'm starting to get that from reading these comments. Does everyone who uses a Mac with an external display also purchase the Magic Trackpad?

> On window snapping: why on earth would you want to obscure your desktop with two huge panes?

OP here. I typically have a browser with documentation on one half, and a terminal/IDE in the other. I'm on an external monitor, so I want the space.

OP here. This is why I wrote the article.

OP here. This is exactly why I want snapping (I'm using a 27" 1440p monitor)
