lofties··on Ask HN: In these uncertain times, how do you handle anxiousness
> Seeking treatment for depression or generalized anxiety is more similar to seeing a doctor for some poorly understood malady like ME/CFS or IBS. No one really understands what's going on or why

You're not wrong, but we gotta start somewhere.

lofties··on Ask HN: In these uncertain times, how do you handle anxiousness
Your opinion might be unpopular but it shouldn't be. I'm quite well off, have friends, an overall good life, but at the same time was a miserable sack of shit.

Until I talked to a therapist. Initially we spoke every week, now I talk to her about once a month. We talk about everything. What bothers me at work. What bothers me in the world. Things that are going well. Things that are unfair. And she's an impartial advisor on how I can handle and deal with my feelings.

Going to a therapist has turned my life around for the better, and I feel dumb for not going earlier.

If we break our bones we visit a doctor. If our teeth hurt we visit a dentist. And similarly when we feel depressed we should talk to a therapist.

I hope OP finds the help he needs.

lofties··on Show HN: Unreal Speech – Text-to-Speech API
I'm going to argue yours is not better. I preferred the AWS example, which was no doubt cherry picked, over all of your voices. Especially during the transition between sentences there is an audible glitch in the audio, whereas AWS transitioned smoothly.
lofties··on Bitwarden: Generate a Username
Can confirm that the self-hosted version does indeed have 2fa seeds behind a paywall -- that being said though, storing both passwords AND your 2fa seeds in the same app feels like a security antipattern.
lofties··on Automate Public Certificates Lifecycle Management via RFC 8555 (ACME)
The big difference here is that their ACME server is part of Google Cloud. Google Cloud is a paid service and in the 5 years of using it, I cannot remember any gcloud service being deprecated, without a similar alternative being introduced. (e.g cloud image registry being replaced with artifact registry)

Which mean it will most likely apply to most people: the average is the average for a reason.
lofties··on Building a no-code toxicity classifier by talking to GitHub Copilot
Think of GitHub copilot as StackOverflow on steroids -- a quick way to write code when you're not sure how to achieve what you're trying to do.

After all, "How to parse a CSV file in Python" is longer than "csv.reader(file)" but without knowing that "csv.reader" exists, you have no other way but to tell Google what you need.

Netflix needs to realize, if it hasn't already, that it's not a technology company, but a production company.
lofties··on Exiled from the Metaverse before it even started: Facebook bans are for life
I want my account back, I even said so at the end. But I also want to let people know that, despite having access to some high level people inside of FB, I most likely won't get my account back.

So it's two-fold: I want people to know they can get banned, at any time, for life, without much of a warning. And two: you might depend on Facebook more than you'd like to, so plan accordingly.

I really hate that I can't talk to James anymore. I didn't even bother to swap email addresses.

lofties··on Exiled from the Metaverse before it even started: Facebook bans are for life
You're 100% right. A few years back you could sign up for business accounts which were seperate from your personal identity, but 2 or 3 years back this practice was cancelled and you had to start linking your business account to your personal account.

Also having two facebook accounts is not allowed by their TOS. That's the first thing our partner manager asked me: "do you have multiple accounts by any chance? That often gets people banned".

lofties··on Exiled from the Metaverse before it even started: Facebook bans are for life
I've done and created a second account, which was reduced to a limited account the minute I linked my secondary phone number. Probably used that number on my old account already, so they were quick to strike it down.

I could not link a phone, but I need to link my phone number if I want to get access to more advanced functionality such as running ads, pages, et cetera.

Surely there are a thousand other ways I could sign up again -- but to be honest I don't want to jump through those hoops. I just want my account back. And since that isn't happening, I hope my tale serves as a warning for people never to rely on Facebook as they can take your access away if their bots think you're suspicious.

lofties··on TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false
Oh that's a great one! I have a thermal receipt printer (can recommend anyone to buy one, they're amazing) that is 80 characters wide. Would definitely screw up the formatting if it ever encountered this situation. (and no further validation was performed on the uppercase'd string)

Great post, very fun project.

A while back I wrote a blogpost[1] about using PNG chunk functionality to "hide" a arbitrary data in PNGs without it affecting the way a PNG is displayed. I'd love to see this being used together with this project.

lofties··on Compute Engine Predictive Autoscaling
And the downscaling in my experience takes too long. Sometimes it feels it's done this way on purpose to rake in a few extra hours of compute pennies. It starts adding up... imagine if you have a million customers and you can suddenly charge them an extra few dollars per month.

We have an interal bug bounty program! But it's more of a retainer when you think about it. We basically transfer a six figure dollar amount, in 12 monthly installments, to our developers. Then in return when they find a bug they bring it to attention and fix it. It works pretty well!!

Spyware is not a prank. Let's not come up with vague definitions of what is, and isn't acceptable.

Coworker has remote access to other coworkers machine and is abusing this trust to install spyware, setting a president for other "jokes".

Sorry man, I don't see anything funny here.

lofties··on Pure Skill Minesweeper
It sounds to me like you installed spyware on your coworkers computer. What kind of company were you working at where people see this as a joke instead of a security breach? And let's not forget the trust coworkers have in you not to fuck with their machines.
lofties··on The code I’m still ashamed of (2016)
Some background, I work for an ad-tech startup. We provide workflow and performance optimizations on top of Facebook and Twitter ads.

A few years back we managed to draw the attention of a pretty big agency who at the same time was in the news because one of their employees killed themselves over the work pressure. Now, this company has ten thousands employees so we never gave it much thought, but later we learned that the account we scored was actually the account of the employee who killed herself. The employee was of a similar age to me at the time, and the company approached us the day after the news of the suicide broke.

Although it's not in similar vein, it made me feel like shit for a few good days and I still think about it whenever the Agency is in the news or someone mentions it.

lofties··on A $43,859.00 Refurbished Mac Pro
I was curious as to whether this indeed would be possible. But the CPU (W-3275M) itself starts at $6k, the Vega's are $8k each, I can't find any catalogue prices but each slab of ram comes in at around $600 which puts us at $30k. Not unthinkable that the remaining hardware can add another $5k to the bill and you're looking at a $35k machine.

You can probably replace some of these with consumer grade parts, but I'll be impressed if you can create a machine with two titans, 28 cores, and 1.5tB of memory for under $10k.
