Until Boring Company sets up multiple pickup points with Loop and Hyperloop tunnels; then will arguably be a max 20-30 minute ride.

The dynamics of travel will dramatically change multiple industries, save for if the status quo establishment and industrial complexes through regulatory capture prevent the rapid expansion of the paradigm shift in transport that Boring Company is rapidly developing; the technology of which Elon needs for his Mars colony, and so it'll happen and be developed as far as is determined to be necessary to maximize its utility and safety.

loceng··on The Untold Story of How US Spies Sabotaged Soviet Technology
This reminds me of the Avro Arrow - the beginning of the gutting of Canada's technology and innovation development: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Canada_CF-105_Arrow

One day the US President met with the Canadian Prime Minister at the time. The next day the PM scrapped the program, ordered all schematics and documents of the aircraft be destroyed.

The something like 40,000 engineers mostly then got jobs in the US.

loceng··on Dear AI Companies, instead of scraping OpenStreetMap, how about a $10k donation?
I noticed too that now that the old dinosaur incumbents in various industrial complexes can no longer compete, they want to get rid of non-compete clauses - so they can instead poach talent or at least those who had access to the latest technologies and process of actually innovative companies.
loceng··on Open source AI is the path forward
To me it will be most interesting to see who attempts to manipulate the models by stuffing them with content, essentially adding "duplicate" content such as via tautology, in order to make it have added-misallocated weight; which I don't think an AI model will automatically be able to determine, unless it was truly intelligent, instead it would require to be trained by competent humans.

And so the models that have mechanisms for curating and preventing such misapplied weighting, and then the organizations and individuals who accurately create adjustments to the models, will in the end be the winners - where truth has been more honed for.

loceng··on Is Cultivated Meat for Real?
Regardless if there is voluntary long-term adoption of such technologies by a relatively free market vs. regulatory capture that leads politicians to arguably poorly-wastefully investing in technologies and companies pulling from the public coffers politicians have been entrusted with protecting; instead of the company and their technology, their offerings, gaining "votes" by consumers one-to-one buying the products, giving them profits and building more competent investors' confidence that the startup/technology is a actually good bet; of course the VC industrial complex has the whole hype up process for pump and dump, onto the public markets, so end consumers may become invested into bad investments if their stock broker and them aren't aligned properly incentives wise.

There's already a battle between mass produced and arguably unethical-inhumane living conditions/processes of the chicken industrial complex vs. small-organic farm raised chickens [of which overall arguably is losing and will remain suppressed even if it's what consumers prefer due to things like economies of scale and government subsidies that stack in favour to industrial complexes], and so adding a cultured "meat" into the food industrial complex landscape becomes more of a competitive battle between the existing handful of centralized incumbents and this new method of producing "food" [whether healthy or not] - which has the lowest manufacturing-distribution costs, and is policy structured to allow the general-mass population of people to have enough money to afford more than what is the cheapest.

There is also arguably a war within this industry, and perhaps foreign bad actors who may also be attempting to destroy our food production hoping for various outcomes, whether causing a reduction in supply and so an increase in price-profits, or other; I'll let your own creativity and imagination take you there, extrapolate further if you're connected to and spent much time already integrating the shadow.

P.S. The above of course isn't specific to Israel, many, if not most governments seem to do this to various degrees to "support" industrial complexes.

I could have been more careful with my language: it's the ones at the top, the ones positioning themselves to take lead positions and/or being positioned as useful puppets, manufacturing and weaponizing an ideological mob that doesn't care about or follow critical thinking to actually find out what the truth is, and how urgent or not urgent climate change is or how severe and how easily mitigable human impact on climate is.

Are you familiar with the concepts of manufacturing consent, fear mongering, regulatory capture, turnkey authoritarianism, tyranny, etc?

loceng··on Puerto Rico files $1B suit against fossil fuel companies
And unfortunately the people pushing for using anti-oil energy policy are implementing it it appears to gain more control over the general population, and to implement more authoritarian policy.

The fastest and non-violent way to achieve the most efficient results is through the relative free market, education and voluntary adoption - and through purchasing power, but not through forced purchasing power - nor nonsense tax policy like the "CO2 tax" on all fuel - and therefore all products and transport involved with production and distribution of all products vs. only having a CO2 tax specifically on products from countries who's CO2 emissions are increasing or skyrocketing; penalize weighted based on actual emissions; whether CO2 emissions are actually harmful or not, CO2 can be released without releasing polluting particulate - of which CO2 isn't pollution itself.

Edit to add: use your words folks.

loceng··on Scientists discover a cause of lupus, possible way to reverse it
Did you ever do an Igg food sensitivity test-food panel to check if there were any inflammatory Igg markers from specific foods you were eating? E.g. they can test for 200+ most common foods, which you would of had to have eaten within the last 2-3 months for the Igg markers to still be present - otherwise they breakdown and obviously won't be detected.

To note, you need to eat high fat meat in order to properly digest the meat.

It's possible to also be allergic to certain types of meat, e.g. there's a protein in duck that bothers me.

Another factor to seriously consider is if consuming high quality organic meat vs. whatever else.

Also, meat requires a lot of energy to break down due to its [nutrient-calorie] density - of course you get back much more energy than it consumes, but it is an intensive process, so if there are other foods you're eating that are causing irritation then digesting meat could be problematic - and so then while of course reducing or stopping eating meat will then stop symptoms, it's possible that if removing the other foods that may be causing problems would then allow the meat consumption without causing any problems.

There's really been no properly done research on diet.

You just proved my point with your second sentence - that everything in the future will come.

And bringing things more expediently is the actual opinion here, unsupported, where arguably it actually slows down not only progress but the value of that progress not being as widely distributed as it otherwise would be.

loceng··on Judge dismisses DMCA copyright claim in GitHub Copilot suit
Everything in the future is novel, so that's a moot qualifier.

Everything requires attention to be seen, once somethign becomes "obvious" is fully determined where you're looking and the scope you're zoomed in on.

E.g. "matter is solid" until you zoom in and realize matter is mostly made up of space.

loceng··on Judge dismisses DMCA copyright claim in GitHub Copilot suit
Of non-obvious inventions. My argument being all inventions are obvious once attention is applied to that area and scope.
loceng··on Judge dismisses DMCA copyright claim in GitHub Copilot suit
This kind of argument makes me feel like it also supports the abolition of patents: eventually multiple other people will come up with the same obvious solution, which becomes obvious once a person spends enough time looking at a problem.

“Your boos mean nothing to me, I've seen what makes you cheer” - Rick, Rick & Morty

P.S. You realize that ad hominem is only used by those who are immature?

loceng··on FDA Expands Approval of Gene Therapy for Patients with Muscular Dystrophy
I think we need to begin to use specific names when talking about approval processes, rather than just lumping everyone under the same "FDA" brand. E.g. Are certain people in the organizational structure have a history of fraud being detected, drugs being recalled vs. others who were involved perhaps at every step of oversight and 0% of the drugs approved with their involvement have never had recalls?

Not being specific with language appears to, whether purposefully done or due to a lack of discipline, add a prominence or add a label or brand on top of a pedestal - maybe deserved to be done so by some of an organization's people - but then others new to an organization with unknown track records, their work then will ride on the coattails of an institution with a certain reputation (whether accurate or not, whether deserved or not).

Edit to add: Have a contrary opinion worth anything? Prove it by sharing it in writing.

loceng··on Canada lists Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group
My reply - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40734834 - here I wrote more detail in a comment higher up that give some credibility to the idea-sentiment, even if factually the Freedom Convoy was never officially classified as terrorists - in short they did [illegaly] have the Emergencies Act invoked against them which gave them perhaps the same or even more powers to be executed against peacefully protesting Canadians [of which even a judge said they could continue their protest in Ottawa itself, where it can't honestly be called an "occupation" that the mob wants to attempt to demonize the largest peaceful protest in Canadian history - as part of Trudeau's effort to guilt by association paint them all as "dirty" Nazis - using the "disgust" tactic on them].

Re: "The Nazis' Big Lie was in the Weimar Republic being illegitimate. (Lying, and then making anyone who corrects the lie out as an enemy of the party was another common tactic.)"

Perhaps the big lie, starts as, that the Freedom Convoy are dirty Nazis - having the leverage and reach, power, of the state-funded media like CBC et al - to propagate and train-teach people to believe that, to then avoid anyone associated with the Freedom Convoy - or

For example, have you heard about the National Citizens' Inquiry and testimonies that have been being collected, on video and published, starting in 2023 and continuing in 2024? These testimonies include whistle blowers from various Canadian government institutions [medical and otherwise] - and also CBC - as well as those who were harmed/permanently injured by the COVID mRNA shots [and gaslit by the government institutions]: https://nationalcitizensinquiry.ca/

The Emergencies Act was a law previously called, renamed, from the War Measures Act.

There was a post-POEC commission required to be held within a certain period of time of the invocation the Public Order Emergency Commission (POEC) - where it was the person, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who invoked the act - who selected his long-time family friend to be the commissioner of said commission, Rouleau, to conclude whether invoking the Emergencies Act was valid or not; conflict of interest should immediately come to mind for everyone, along with then questioning the integrity and legitimacy of the POEC - if going by good faith.

Commissioner Rouleau concluded it was valid - but also concluded that any reasonable person could come to the completely opposite conclusion that he did, giving no backbone to his conclusion - but definitely producing the narrative talking points and conclusion that state-funded media then heavily propagated to all Canadians.

In the actual Canadian courts however, once it went through the actual judicial system that was bound by law and where the non-government lawyers actually had the tools of the courts to use - and where the judge/commissioner couldn't play favourites - where the judge wasn't assigned by Trudeau himself, where Rouleau wasn't a filter/shield in place having to approve any witnesses (etc) and that were asked to testify, while allowing improper processes that aren't acceptable in normal courts for very good reason [like dumping 1,000s of pages of evidence, on the desks of the lawyers prosecuting the government, the day before certain witnesses would be testifying] - the courts found that the Emergencies Act was illegally invoked, that it didn't meet the very clear prerequisites-criteria to determine if it was a national emergency or not.

The fraudulent nature of the POEC process listed above was far more egregious than this, however most who have already been convinced the Trudeau government are honest and with integrity, already scoff and dismiss the courts findings, and so there's little point to point to sharing the even more blatant corruption of law and order processes by the government and its lawyers-representatives.

Re: Terrorist-financing act & intent

The current Canadian government in power (a coalition between Trudeau-Liberals and the NDP party, giving them the power of a majority - the NDP playing "good cop" as part of their theatre for Canadians who aren't aware of more than the shallow level of what is presented them in state-funded media) didn't succeed specifically in defining the Freedom Convoy under the Terrorist Act, however it was clear that the intent-hope of the Liberal-Trudeau political party was in fact wanting to have the Freedom Convoy labeled as a terrorist group was their intent-hope; this is the epitome of guilt by association - eliminating the fundamental "innocent unless proven guilty" rule of law, if I may be so bold point out.

E.g. Chrystia Freeland during the POEC had notes brought into evidence while she was testifying, where I can't remember if now if it was 1) her notes, or 2) the notes of the head of RCMP (our national police force's name) stating that she wanted the Freedom Convoy classified as terrorists - so then they could be treated as such under the current law; Freeland, the current Finance Minister of Canada, and Deputy Prime Minister - the #2 to Prime Minister Trudeau - same position as the US' Vice President - where she who has practically no education or experience in regards to finance.

But that's moot really because as they invoked the Emergencies Act - found to be illegal by the courts [not by their long-term family friend] - they had at least the same ability by actions they could execute on under that law to seize assets/property like money-bank accounts, etc. So if the government had the same capabilities allowed under a terrorist-finance act, and used some of them - that's akin, just as bad, right?

The vast majority of people have only seen the narrative talking points propagated by the state-funded media like CBC and the politicians toeing this Trudeau-NDP line, who've been doing their best to suppress the voices of their political dissidents; now where they're attempting to suppress the political dissidents and dissident political party (the Conservatives) from releasing the names of the known Liberal-NDP politicians that our intelligence agencies confirmed willingly and/or willfully blindly accepted help knowingly from the CCP; the common understanding is if these were Conservative politicians, or if the majority were Conservatives, then these names would have been published immediately - but CSIS (our version of CIA) whistle blowers previously released intelligence that China-CCP previously helped Trudeau and other party members win in at least the last 2 elections.

loceng··on Ask HN: Freelancers, how do you get work?
Upwork also plays favourites to agencies - there appears to be some sort of non-transparent relationship there that they don't want the general public-marketplace knowing about, but if you use Upwork long enough you'll hit its various boundaries and faults; I'm guessing they don't disclose this in their public documentation to shareholders - as would match the other unethical-shady pattern of behavour I've experienced on that platform.

Re: "The only thing it says about me, however, is that I've seen a lot of anti immigration arguments made that were actually just people being racist."

Indeed, causation vs. correlation - and that reactivity and assumptions is a fundamental issue for society, where people get worked up emotionally and then react based on that - and in the worst case scenario that boils into physical violence; of which authoritarians, tyrants, and bad actors will use to weaponize and direct an ideological-angry mob to help meet their own goals.

Re: "... it's seems a bit crazy to suggest that you, a Canadian, spent $800k on US health care because of immigration."

Because I didn't suggest that, another assumption you made; you know what they say about making assumptions - "it makes an 'ass' of 'u' and 'me'. I added the flooding of immigrants as an additional factor/supportive argument to the untenable situation comment - that flood making things far worse, when there was already a major family doctor/general physician shortage here.

But yes - I plan to make it as crystal clear as I can - including by ideally working with and getting comments from the various doctors and associated organizations/institutions; hopefully voluntarily - but perhaps through official complaint processes when possible to require oversight and a conversation.

Over the years I've written a lot but my pain level is still too high - although knock on wood there may only be 2 more major sources that can be addressed, and then my concentration and executive function may then improve enough where I can start to properly compile and organize my writings into a book, to thoroughly outline exactly the path and challenges I encountered.

You'd probably be a great person to proofread my book draft, if it ever gets done, so I can see what assumptions you may make between unrelated-disconnected statements - so I can try to be more clear; I'd even pay you.

Thanks for sharing.

There are blind spots regarding problems that you're unaware of since you haven't experienced them.

Glad your and your mother's situations were simple enough for a relatively quick resolution.

I wonder if your mother could have benefit more from a stem cell treatment, but that perhaps only a knee replacement was covered - even if the knee replacement would have cost the system more money overall.
