local_issues··on The era of cheap streaming is officially over
Isn't that just Cable but shittier and more expensive?
local_issues··on The artists reclaiming AI from big tech with the help of cats, bees, drag queens
Is this a joke?
local_issues··on Braille Is Alive, Well, and Ever-Evolving
Fun fact! Unless you have no eyes or no optic nerve, you'll basically always see something. Even 100% blind people can still see shadows, movement, the sun, etc.

Most of the "blind" definition is around driving and reading.

local_issues··on Efficacy of infant simulator programmes to prevent teenage pregnancy
Condoms don't really work at scale so far, compliance isn't great and even when it is they break. Same w/the Pill, it's a bit better but has shitty side effects.
local_issues··on Living Wage Calculator
That's the downside of this. If my political group advocates for a minimum wage of $100k, and I put out a tool that says you need to make $100k or you'll die, then I am a very good boy and will receive many Twitter likes, as well as possible citations in Slate and Vice.
local_issues··on Efficacy of infant simulator programmes to prevent teenage pregnancy
How does this compare to offering IUDs to a third group?
local_issues··on Efficacy of infant simulator programmes to prevent teenage pregnancy
This study took place in Australia.
local_issues··on WeWork goes from $47B valuation to ‘substantial doubts’ about its future
It's a cliche because it's true - it's very easy to grow by selling a $1 for 50¢. WFH, Covid, etc obviously helped kill WeWork but they had a long time to reach profitability before 2020.

This is a great read, the public display of his wife thanking his mother was ... something. - https://www.propertyweek.com/insight/the-cult-of-wework/5098...

local_issues··on Google launches Project IDX, an AI-enabled browser-based development environment
This is like the 60th version of these. Software work has become enormously more complicated in my career/since the aughts.

We’re fine.

local_issues··on UPS driver pay and benefits deal in US to be worth $170k a year, firm says
Good. Thats a tough job that society depends on. I have a few friends who do it and they’re proud of the work and that they can support their families.
local_issues··on Your computer should say what you tell it to say
I agree with you, but I don't see a big attack on freedom of religion, assembly (post COVID) or movement lately. Freedom of Speech is under massive, coordinated attack by gigacorporations and https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/please-just-fucking-tel...
local_issues··on Ask HN: What are the big/important problems to work on?
The issue isn't capital or demand, it's the insane Single Family regulations and the NIMBYs that defend the status quo to the death.
local_issues··on Your computer should say what you tell it to say
The EFF stands alone in its commitment to actually speaking truth to power. The ACLU has become just another arm of the DNC, same with the SPLC etc - repeating CNN-esque talking points. Same with the NRA - milquetoast arm of those in power.

The EFF will go after orgs that fund it, which requires true compunction.

FIRE is a good replacement for the ACLU, FYI. And John Brown Gun Club is becoming a better NRA.

local_issues··on Mexico seeks to solidify rank as top U.S. trade partner, push further past China
Indians and East Asians are sprinting to the Right because of this, DEI, and the movement to neuter schools. It’s not a huge thing yet - i still see a truly enormous amount of second gen Boba Liberals - but it will be.
local_issues··on Ask HN: What are the big/important problems to work on?
The rise of the far right is in large part due to mainline society failing to "Uplifting the many men falling out of society", "Protecting children and their parental rights", and "Reversing the declining trust in institutions (media, public health, DOJ, etc)"

The Left doesn't believe these are issues, but are instead moral failings or the result of a reduction in privilege by cishet white men. Their statements to that effect have pushed ~a dozen of my friends from D to R voters.

local_issues··on Ask HN: What are the big/important problems to work on?
The housing crisis.
local_issues··on Compilation of claims/reports of LK-99 replication efforts
Huh? Those are people trying to pump garbage. This is people excited for a huge breakthrough.

Life is so much more beautiful and wondrous if you're willing to be vulnerable. Let people be excited.

local_issues··on Compilation of claims/reports of LK-99 replication efforts
But this is so much fun! Reddit isn’t fun, and the energy here is just lovely
local_issues··on Serial murders have dwindled, thanks to improved technology
Absolutely is in NYC.
local_issues··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
That would make sense if we were speaking German. But we, and they, are not
local_issues··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
Please refer to us with our chosen demonym, it’s just basic manners.

I could dunk on Germans by referring to them as Nazis then acting indignant when they protest, but I won’t, because that would be bizarre and make me look insane

local_issues··on America’s Most Tech-Forward City Has Doubts About Self-Driving Cars
Could also be called “America’s most fucked up region intent on killing the Golden Goose”
local_issues··on Can focusing on class instead of race solve our country’s equity issues?
You are describing neoliberalism, the economic system which has lead to the most prosperity in human history.
local_issues··on Oral cancer drug kills 100% of tumors in vitro and in animal models
The story is beautiful, too: https://nypost.com/2023/08/02/new-cancer-hope-as-pill-kills-...

Named after a girl that died. Resulted in fundraising for Neuroblastoma, and this medicine.

local_issues··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
The Disney USA logo vs Disney China logo meme is always relevant

If you are ok with being a hypocrite, you can push a strong narrative in the US while challenging literally nothing in China/Saudi Arabia.

local_issues··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
What's US-American? You mean American?

Is this one of those weird things where Germans try to dunk on Americans by calling us USians?

local_issues··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
I agree but I also think that comedy is too risky for Netflix. Look at the Chappelle shitshow, and that was over something that was agreed on by ~100% of America 10 years ago.

There's always someone willing to crybully, so why bother? And, counter to that, if there's always someone offended, why not be Sam Hyde? Offend everyone, fuckit.

local_issues··on China’s Latest Problem: People Don’t Want to Go There
I'm a big fan of Chinese culture but I'm absolutely not a China bull.

If India can stay on this track, the next few centuries will be theirs for the taking. Demographics are in their favor, democracy is shittier short term but very stable long term, China's growth is slowing, and India engineering is world class.

I think we'll see China like Brazil - a country that had a shot, and spent it, and is now permanently middle income; a regional power.

local_issues··on China’s Latest Problem: People Don’t Want to Go There
Sad. Chinese cuisine is arguably the best in the world, and I've heard the streets are finally clean and the air is getting better. Despite those both being major issues in India, people still go there in droves, so maybe politics > experience?

Would love to go to Chengdu either way.

local_issues··on Google’s Plan to DRM the Web Goes Against Everything Google Once Stood For
Google and it's employees are, combined, one of the largest DNC donors. This will never, ever happen.
