lobsterthief··on Show HN: I made an open-source laptop from scratch
I disagree; I did similar projects like this in high school (not exactly like this; his is a true achievement). I did very well grade-wise and had a high GPA but I bombed the SAT because I didn’t understand that you didn’t lose the same number of points for questions you skipped. So the ones I didn’t have time to answer I just randomly selected, which resulted in a poor score.

I found out later:

1. How SAT scoring works 2. That you shouldn’t take the last SAT of the year since then you cannot retake it 3. I probably should’ve taken the ACT instead

I wish they’d prepared us in school for this, but they were too busy training us for standardized state testing since that determined their own budget.

Could I have gotten into MIT? Unsure; back at 18 I didn’t know MIT existed and this was early Internet times. It would have been nice if my high school mentioned it as an option.

In my case at least, doing projects like this and getting good grades didn’t automatically turn into attending any college I wanted. Either way, I ended up with a great career.

Anyways, kudos to the person who made this project!

lobsterthief··on Amazon's AI crawler is making my Git server unstable
For Google, just read their publicly-published list of crawler IPs. They’re broken down into 3 JSON files by category. One set of IPs is for GoogleBot (the web crawler), one is for special requests like things from Google Search Console, and one is special crawlers related to things like Google Ads.

You can ingest this IP list periodically and set rules based on those IPs instead. Makes you not prone to the blackhat SEO tactic you mentioned. In fact, you could completely block GoogleBot UA strings that don’t match the IPs, without harming SEO, since those UA strings are being spoofed ;)

lobsterthief··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Remember we’re all in a tech bubble here. 99.9% of TikTok users don’t know what sideloading is.
lobsterthief··on In the belly of the MrBeast
I had a hobby electronics channel that was getting quite popular (~30k subs after ~15 videos). I burned out for a different reason: it’s hard to do this as a side gig. If I could’ve done it full time I would’ve continued doing so, but YouTube just doesn’t pay you enough despite each video getting >100K views. I paid zero attention to the algorithm and just focused on creating unique, creative, high-quality content that showed a level of effort was put forth. This “side gig” burned me out.

So it’s possible you would’ve burned out anyways, despite any algorithmic considerations.

lobsterthief··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
That one is fantastic.

Also, _Abandoned_, which is about the [less fortunate] Greely expedition.

lobsterthief··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
I am actively doing this as well
lobsterthief··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
Why?
lobsterthief··on Microsoft disguises Bing as Google to fool inattentive searchers
Sorry to break it to you, but yes they do.
lobsterthief··on Man trapped inside driverless Waymo car as it spins in circles
Maybe for you—we were devastated by two hurricanes last year
lobsterthief··on VW Group Collects Vehicle Movement Data
In my experience it’s really up to technical leadership to highlight what will happen if security flaws are ignored. If more senior leadership continues to ignore these issues, then it’s a culture issue and I wouldn’t stick around.

Surely it’s all about risk mitigation; some out-of-date NPM package with a minor flaw might cause the can to be kicked, but a major flaw with demonstrable consequences should get priority.

lobsterthief··on Switched Back to Windows After over 10 Years on Linux
I dunno, Windows XP was pretty great.
lobsterthief··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
I agree with all of what you said except this:

> idiot savants with vast and unreliable intelligence.

Remember, intelligence !== knowledge. These LLMs indeed have vast and unreliable knowledge banks.

lobsterthief··on Looking for the best forum software to start a new forum community in 2025
Discourse can be self-hosted as well
lobsterthief··on macOS menu bar app that shows how full the ISS urine tank is in real time
Such a sad tale. I’d love to watch a documentary about this.
lobsterthief··on The software you need for holiday overdecoration
Sounds like an inadvertent method of preventing non-Christians from living on that block.
lobsterthief··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
To be honest it needs a different name if it’s going to hit critical mass adoption with the average consumer.
lobsterthief··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
I see offers (or “ads”) for Google Ads inside of the Google Cloud Platform Dashboard all the time.
lobsterthief··on Ghost artists on Spotify
You can’t just reorder events and then compare them to the original event.

In reverse: Many dictators killed millions of their own people, but then completely stopped and began building roads for the people instead.

lobsterthief··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
Yes but remember we’re in a tech bubble and the average person still doesn’t know what ChatGPT is.
lobsterthief··on A 10-Year Battery for AirTag
Probably volume and type of toxic materials are the best metrics
lobsterthief··on Why we use our own hardware
It’s also human capital/resource allocation. We thought about spinning up our own servers at my last gig; we had the talent in house but that talent was busy building the product, not managing servers. I suppose it depends on what your need is as well.
lobsterthief··on Swiss Re study: Waymo is safer than even the most advanced human-driven vehicles
Maybe that’s true where you live but not where I do. A big part of traffic around here is caused by the pure number of vehicles being routed through intersections via traffic signals. Human behavior has little impact there.
lobsterthief··on Amazon workers to strike at multiple US warehouses during busy holiday season
Making me drive 20 mins to Whole Foods to deliver some items, and wait in a line where there’s one kiosk, has completely turned me off of Amazon.

This is probably by design, but I don’t return a whole lot.

lobsterthief··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
Lawsuits are one of the few enforcement mechanisms the FTC has.
lobsterthief··on BlenderGPT
Maybe just call it “ChopperGPT” or some other synonym for “blender”
lobsterthief··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
Great idea, I’ll just drop everything in my life and do that
lobsterthief··on Moon
I think it’s because it just requires more architecture and coordination to implement at scale with any real sanity.
lobsterthief··on To Log into WordPress, You Now Have to Agree Pineapple on Pizza Is Good
The label is not even vertically aligned correctly…
lobsterthief··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
I’ve found it’s best to squeeze them in the morning, before you’re tired from daily work ;) But I understand not everybody can function well that early
lobsterthief··on My second year without a job
Same. The exception for me is tools, because I really enjoy building things and I own a house. I feel they’re inherently useful and I do research to ensure I get those that will last [nearly] a lifetime. I never buy a new tool because it’s new, only because the old one has become worn or broken.
