loboman··on What professional philosophers believe – Survey results
I get you are joking but... That's just as bad as thinking that the most popular answer is the right one. The best you can do is to decide which one is best by analyzing the contents, not the % values.
loboman··on GNOME 3.8 Released
When I was using it I used to notice a slight delay on some actions (maximizing a window, doing alt-tab, opening the task bar, etc.), that I never had on Gnome Classic.

It must be said, however, Cinnamon is really nice.

loboman··on GNOME 3.8 Released
I tried Cinnamon for a while and I was very happy with it... except for its performance; it is quite slow; I recently went back to Gnome Classic, and although it is not as nice as Cinnamon, it is much faster.
loboman··on What Thomas Edison expected job candidates to know
http://www.pangeaprogress.com/1/post/2010/09/einstein-edison... 'While in Boston, Einstein was subjected to a pop quiz known as the Edison test. (...) A reporter asked him a question from the test. "What is the speed of sound?" If anyone understood the propogation of sound waves, it was Einstein. But he admitted that he did not "carry such information in my mind since it is readily available in books." Then he made a larger point designed to disparage Edison's view of education. "The value of a college education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think," he said.'
loboman··on Why Distributed Teams are Less Effective (2010)
Yes, I understand. I don't mean that all such remote workers are bad. What I mean is, that kind of thing is a filter that removes good people who wouldn't do that kind of thing. Developers do much better work when there isn't anybody spying on their shoulder. It is the customers who get worse results when they don't understand that (except for programmers who won't work unless somebody is looking at their shoulder... but then you really don't want to hire those).
loboman··on Why Distributed Teams are Less Effective (2010)
> Remote workers are more OK with having odesk take screenshots of their desktop so I know they are working for the time I paid them.

Probably not very good remote workers if you have to do that, and if they accept you to do that. (I otherwise agree with most of your points)

loboman··on Paul Allen: The Singularity Isn't Near (2011)
Just curious, in what context did you ask Bill Gates that?
loboman··on I love you, dad
I'm sorry. Best wishes for your wife and you.
loboman··on Catfish hunt pigeons in France
Because it is interesting. Actually it is more interesting and novel than much of the other news items that you can see in the front page.
loboman··on Nomic
I would have preferred the story.
loboman··on NASA Probe Finds Ice and Organics on Mercury
Is this the announcement Nasa was talking about, or is this unrelated?
loboman··on A Google Surprise — Worldwide Alternative Reality Game Ingress Revealed
Doesn't work to me... it just shows the booting screen, then it does nothing.
loboman··on How I went from $100-an-hour programming to $X0,000-a-week consulting
If you do it right, you are never getting paid the value you provide. The model is always: generate value, get a slice of that, repeat. Think of a very rich person; if this person is so rich, it is because s/he provided much more value to others than the value it captured for him or herself. (Except for conmen)
loboman··on Skype vulnerability allowing hijacking of an account if you know just the email

loboman··on Why we have never hired an MBA
"In the same way being an hobbyist programmer will never give you the same skill set than a CS degree." Never? Despite the countless examples, including Torvalds and Carmack? I really disagree on that.
loboman··on The front page of HN almost exactly 5 years ago
I asked if he could either remove my account or comments. He said that the comments are part of other people's conversations, so he didn't want to remove all of them (later he asked if I had some specific comments I wanted to remove, and what were my reasons to want to remove all of them). By then I realized he was right.
loboman··on The front page of HN almost exactly 5 years ago
Interesting that you mention that.

hhm was my previous username, but I lost its password now. Probably after switching accounts some years ago, after becoming a little paranoid about internet identity (I even sent a mail asking pg to remove that account... he was smarter than me and said he wouldn't do that; thanks pg). I now realize I shouldn't care so much about that really.

By that time, I realized that it might be easy to get into the leaderboard just by posting quality links of stuff I was interested into. I put some effort into that by some time and I reached (I think) the 10th place. I stored a screenshot about that, named something like "and-what-was-that-for.jpg" that I can't find right now. But I remember noticing a couple things about that experience:

- how empty it was after I achieved that random objective... it was just some score, and it didn't serve any useful purpose, so once I achieved it I couldn't feel too happy about it

and the most interesting bit:

- it was very easy to get into, say, the 20th or 15th spot. But then raising into the 10th spot was much harder. I understood that people between 15 - 200 weren't trying to reach that kind of score, or they weren't trying too hard. People don't compete too much. Then when approximating the 10th spot, I found that it was getting increasingly harder. I'm sure somebody trying to get into the 1st or 2nd spot would have to spend an amazing amount of work into that.

It was just a game I played for some short span of time, then I quit. Now I miss that account a little bit :)

loboman··on Getting People to Use Your App
What about using acquisition costs vs. profit per customer, and ads to get people to use an app?

Over 10,000?

loboman··on Valve: Linux More Open Than Windows 8 for Gaming
Valve in cooperation with Canonical. Now we know why Ubuntu needs to have some secret projects.
loboman··on Meeting A Troll
If he knows the friend ip, he knows that they both match (friend = troll).
loboman··on Meeting A Troll
Also he might know the friend's ip if the friend sent him an email.
loboman··on Rethinking Sleep
Thanks! very insightful
loboman··on Rethinking Sleep
If you don't mind the question: what kind of activity do you need to have in a site to generate that kind of revenue from it? ($ 1500 - $ 2000). Is it something in the order of, say, 10k ad views per month, 100k, or something bigger like 1 million, or is any other interesting factor that needs to be considered?
loboman··on Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
Ok, moving to Linux Mint next. Any other suggestions?
loboman··on The only two ways to build a $100m business
Wow, this doesn't cover models that have worked for companies like Microsoft or Apple. Were they viral, or did they depend on big LTV? Not completely. LTV helps (people buying iPhone again and again), but they are not subscription-based companies. I think this model falls short to describe business.
loboman··on PayPal Set to Suspend Domestic Transactions in Argentina
I live in Argentina and I agree. It is becoming a bad place to live in, sadly.

Edit: let me add, Argentina is great, there are great people creating companies or doing amazing stuff; but the general climate for doing anything good is becoming terrible. If you want to do anything as an Argentinian, you have to fight against lots of obstacles, or you have to emigrate. It is really sad. Argentinian entrepreneurs are survivors of some of the craziest stuff you can imagine.

loboman··on Will Go be the new go-to programming language?
Exactly, this is not a bug and this won't be fixed. Go adds a ";" at the end of lines like "func main()", which in this case means "func main(){" has a different meaning than "func main()".
loboman··on Neil Armstrong, Neal Stephenson, Neil Gaiman
Ok, question. How do you develop the skill of keeping calm under that kind of pressure? I get stressed for the silliest things, I'm sure there is a way to fix that.
loboman··on What killed the Linux desktop
I am using it too, because I like it. I didn't like Unity nor Gnome Shell 3 though; and as Gnome Classic lost support it became uglier. But now I found Cinnamon to be a better alternative to anything else. I am very happy with Linux on the desktop right now; I don't think I'd be happier with a Mac or with Windows, not at all.
