lo_fye··on The 501 Developer Manifesto
Well said :)
lo_fye··on Tupac image performs at Coachella [video]
With the exception of Gorillaz, I probably wouldn't pay to see A holographic artist perform, but I would pay to see a bunch of them perform together. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Tupac, Ricky Valenz, Kurt Cobain, etc. Get DJ BC to create the mashup, and away we go.
lo_fye··on Who Should Control the Internet? A Vanity Fair Feature
"No".
lo_fye··on The Grumpy Programmer's Guide To Building Testable PHP Applications
I've been doing php for 12 years, and I still learned a lot. This book pointed out a number of areas in which I can improve my own code & processes. Well worth reading.

Disclosure: I know the author, but I didn't know he was this smart ;)

lo_fye··on Reuters totally clueless about the meaning of "hacking"
Love how neither of their "Also Read" are hyperlinks.
lo_fye··on What Canadians can do to fight SOPA/PIPA
If we ask politely, I'm sure we can resolve this over a nice breakfast of back bacon, pancakes, & maple syrup. If they disagree, we'll tell their mums.
lo_fye··on Esther Dyson vs Bill Campbell: 2002 − 2012
Damnit, I thought I'd read Esther Dyson vs Bruce Campbell :(
lo_fye··on Jeff Bezos commissioning a giant clock to last 10,000 years.
Totally. I think using the word "commissioned" in the headline is very misleading. It implies that Bezos paid to have it designed & created, when in fact he's just giving Hillis the money he needs to finally make it a reality.
lo_fye··on Poll: Have you had a SSD fail?
No: I've had my OWC Mercury Extreme Pro for 8 months now and haven't had a single issue.
lo_fye··on Building a Thinking Room
I find it disappointing that there wasn't a single mention of a leather wing-backed chair, or "sitting cushions", or incense.

Also, interesting that the author thinks architecture has always been about aesthetics, not psychology. Do you think the Greek & Roman temples were only about aesthetics? I think their largesse was definitely designed to take your mind somewhere else; to make you think of the heavens; to expand your mind. Same for the great cathedrals of europe.

lo_fye··on Stop Making Social Networks, Facebook Won
That's dangerous thinking right there. I'm hoping Diaspora takes off. People need to own & control their own info.

iPhone kills other phones now, but in 10 years an open alternative will do better. Facebook kills other social networks now, but in 10 years an open alternative will do better.

lo_fye··on Goodbye Tokyo Cabinet, hello PostgreSQL
Why is this on the front page? I could understand it IF he switched to PostgreSQL because it outperformed Tokyo Cabinet, but he switched back simply because he finally learned SQL. This isn't about technology, it's about his understanding. This story is lame.
lo_fye··on Ask HN: I have a startup idea, the project is 90% done. But..
Release it, market it, and let the people judge. If you get sales, you'll know you were wrong. Trust the data, not your fear.
lo_fye··on OneSocialWeb: We’re Ahead Of Diaspora In The Creation Of An ‘Open Facebook’
OneSocialWeb is ahead, but their solution is geek-oriented, complex, and ugly. Any solution that's not mom-oriented, simple, and pretty just won't catch on.
lo_fye··on Apple has revolutionized how we think about ads, you just don't know it yet.
Here's why I think they are a game changer:

lo_fye··on Ask HN: I made $24k over the last month. Now what?
The $ should be paid to your business, not you. Then pay yourself very little as a wage. Roll the rest back into the business (i.e. pay yourself to create apps/software that you think would be cool to build and sell). Repeat.
lo_fye··on Thoughts on "e-readers"
When it comes right down to it, Publishers are at the mercy of their authors. For Apple to really hit the industry hard, all they have to to is make it super-attractive to authors 7 content creators.

Publishers don't have to "get it" as long as Authors get it.

iTunes currently gives App creators a 30% cut. It they were to give authors 30% to publish with them instead of their traditional print publishers, I'm sure most authors would jump at the chance. 30% is SO MUCH higher than most authors ever get from print publishers.

lo_fye··on Why Michael Arrington Is The Real Winner In The CrunchPad Ordeal
"Who's the big winner here tonight? Mikey! Mikey's the big winnerrr!" -- I tried to find the clip from Swingers, but Youtube has eradicated it :(
lo_fye··on IPhone Developers: We use our iPhones in bed, allow us to disable landscape
It shouldn't be app-specific. It should be core functionality. Perhaps a gesture, like, if you put 2 fingers on the screen (one at the top, one at the bottom) and rotate them to correctly orient the content, then the Phone should take that as an order to change the orientation from portrait to landscape, or vice-versa... Possibly also add a "lock orientation" icon just to the right of the clock at the top centre of the display so you can lay down, gesture to change orientation, and then lock it.
lo_fye··on Ask HN: Is version control worth learning early on?
Absolutely learn it now. I suggest reading "Pragmatic Version Control Using Git" (Subversion & CVS editions also available), from The Pragmatic Programmers. Excellent book. Short & straightforward.
lo_fye··on Call for a Better Web
Good God, man, have you gone looney? You say the internet is broken because authentication is a pain? You say there should be just one social network? Try telling that to the people making boatloads of cash today.

The internet IS democracy. You can't tell it what it should and shouldn't do, or how it should or shouldn't be. It gets to decide that on its own.

The solution is kinda simple. Don't try to control the internet. It has never worked, and it will never work.

Instead, focus on making OpenID & OAuth easier to implement. Most sites don't want to manage authentication & account creation. They would love to farm it out, but right now, it requires a lot of work to do so.

Instead, take a cue from Plaxo: focus on making a better Identity & Privacy control service. Fill it with simple APIs, and let other sites use it. Make it come complete with lifestream feeds & webhooks. Find a way to use Facebook mail without logging into Facebook.

>>You could have multiple profiles on multiple gateways so that you could have multiple identities if you needed them

Doesn't that defeat your entire stated purpose? Now we're back to 2009: multiple logins on multiple sites.

>>either support the construction of this model or to force the startups you found to embrace this model

Are you TRYING to break the internet? You can't force anything! The internet IS evolution. The internet IS democracy. The internet IS freedom. The internet IS bottom-up, not top-down.

This ain't gonna work.

Build something. If it really is better, people will flock to it. If not, they won't.

There is no force, only do.

lo_fye··on Ask HN: What web framework(s) do you guys use?
Zend Framework + Propel, yo.
