lmedinas··on Vinyl LPs Sell More Than CDs for the First Time in 3 Decades
I think this is really interesting information. As Vinyl has less quality than CDs, uses more space and its way more expensive. But I guess some people like to get the immersion of buying a piece of music and enjoying it in a more vintage way, of course there is nothing wrong with it.

On the other hand i find also interesting the discussion between streaming vs physical and what motivates people to go physical when there are less and less motivation to keep people buying physical. I speak even for myself where i hate the idea of paying 10 Euros a month to have all "borrowed" music i want as long as i keep paying it. On the other hand buying 1-2 CDs per month exceeds the 10 Euros budget but at least i own the media, after one year would be more expensive than Apple Music 1y subscription. Difficult to decide which one is more reasonable.

lmedinas··on I built an app to fix my depression
That sounds not good, you should look for help. Maybe writing an App would help you drive the negative mood way ?
lmedinas··on Debian project has plenty of money but not enough developers
I think you are comparing Apples with Oranges. Linux organizations are mostly done by volunteers and most of the infrastructure used is either donated or allocated in organizations which support their development. So any costs they have is for maintaining anything they really have to pay such as: legal, taxes etc...

On the other hand Mozilla has to pay for infrastructure (and here they have to support multiplatforms and multi OS developments), development, legal, taxes, marketing etc... etc.. It's not even comparable in any order of magnitude the costs involved.

If Mozilla would be to survive with volunteers would be even more miles ahead of other browsers. You can see Thunderbird as an example that Mozilla stopped maintaining since years the development pace slowed considerably.

On a side note: I really wish for the sake of the internet that Mozilla gets their s* together and start to improve their products to be really competitors to Chrome and Safari.

lmedinas··on Former NSA chief Keith Alexander has joined Amazon’s board of directors
Imagine with so much data, US still has so many problems and don't have "Minority report" yet... go figure...

sarcasm.

lmedinas··on Former NSA chief Keith Alexander has joined Amazon’s board of directors
People can also use the Assistant on their phones like Siri or Google Assistant which does basically the same.
lmedinas··on Sid Meier: “I don’t think I could make Civilisation today”
I have a similar opinion. I have seen this news in other websites and I think the article sentence should be approached in other way.

- First Sid is not in his 20s anymore and he probably today has other games or genres he likes more other than complex strategy games. I speak for myself i used to love Starcraft, AoE and RPGs on my teenager years, nowadays i can only get myself to play action games. People change over time, plus some games need more time to get them to work than others.

- Considering the whole video game market. Games like Civilization are still played by many people, but not a huge hit like Fortnite, COD or League of Legends. There is no question there are still people looking for complex games: See Dota2, Escape from Tarkov or even BR games but games like Civilization are still hugely profitable ? I doubt, and video game publishers of course are interested in high profitability. Lets not forget about the mobile market where a huge number of people like to play mostly casual games, for natural reasons.

- As he said, back in the day it was the perfect game to be done in that time. PC gaming got better and people were looking for an immersive and complex game. Nowadays there are several titles which offer the same.

lmedinas··on Habitica – A gamified habit-building and productivity app
Have you used Habitica ? How does it compare to Streaks ? I was interest in trying Streaks also for the reason that it has a clean UI and an Apple Watch app but the high price is turning me down.
lmedinas··on Ask HN: Why don't podcasts have comments?
To answer directly to your question, it depends on the platforms, some podcasts choose certain platforms to allow comments i.e. Joe Rogan is on Youtube so viewers/listeners can submit their comments.
lmedinas··on Facebook prohibits music or music listening experience on Live
I wonder how long it will take for such measures to reach Twitch and Youtube. I remember some weeks ago some streamers started to get threats from DCMA over playing music on stream, i think some of them even got their clips and videos removed due to copyright claim.

I think this is purely music companies decisions, even the artists are not aware of this.

lmedinas··on iPhone unit sales have been declining steadily for 5 years
I don't think this is the only reason for that statement. I think Android phones, specially the cheaper brands, are selling way more than iPhones in new and less income markets in Asia and Africa. Apple has very few chances in thoese markets and the rich markets have already many iPhones still working.

Therefore Apple strategy is to sell other hardware complementary to the iPhone and Internet services.

lmedinas··on iPhone unit sales have been declining steadily for 5 years
i stopped reading ZDNet since years specially due to their useless articles about Linux and Opensource. I think this is another "useless" article.

As you said, its pretty obvious the Smartphone market is full, Apple since years looked for other ways to monetize. Thats why now Apple services have more earnings than iPhones. Apple strategy now is to keep the customer at home buying watches, headphones, tablets, Music etc... etc...

Regarding the sale of iPhones itself it would make sense to compare it per regions and against other competitors like Samsung and Xiaomi. I suspect they sale way more phones smaller and less income markets.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: What feeds do you follow every day?
Well blogs still exist and many of them have higher quality than few years ago because they resisted all this time, the same can be said about RSS. Although I completely understand what you wrote. I also feel the recent boom of podcasts is also somehow replacing blogs.
lmedinas··on Super Tux Kart – Linux racing game
This brings me good memory from early 2000 where this game was one of the first who had good 3D support back then and it was kinda of a benchmark to test if 3D acceleration was working under Linux. Good old times.

Congrats to the developer and thank you for those great moments of fun.

lmedinas··on Super Tux Kart – Linux racing game
It can run some games but it still has issues with multiplayer games mainly due to anti-cheating.

Sadly Vulkan has not really took off as being a major multi platform graphics API which would be the right approach to bring more games to Linux.

lmedinas··on What can 6,000 electric vehicles tell us about EV battery health?
I think they are starting now and when the big boom of EV starts with the traditional manufacturers I guess we will not have issues with spare parts. Although I think the automotive market is going through a huge transformation and it might be that a car will become something like a mobile plan or smartphone contract where every 2-4 years you exchange cars.

Btw... Have you seen the new VW ID3 ? I guess it’s the closest thing to a mass market small car you can get nowadays.

lmedinas··on Netflix is now doing per-shot encoding for UHD content
Agreed, i have Sony Android TV and with Amazon Prime 4K HDR the content has really good quality the problem is that after some time it starts to buffer/jitter and i think its due to Android and bad processors Sony used in the TVs.

My Apple TV 4k obviously runs much snappier but i find the HDR quality really dark and lower than native Android TV.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla worth $420B?
I doubt at this point China wants to buy anything american. Plus Tesla does not have a good history of production neither quality.
lmedinas··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla worth $420B?
i think the main reason, as a follow up of your opinion is that Tesla is a technology company first and automaker second. This gives a huge potential to sell services that are unique/very specific that are tremendously expensive. Im talking about Cells/Battery technology, AI, Autonomous driving, Infotainment devices, Internet of things, Chargers etc... etc...

I think at this point the only Automaker that can follow up Tesla could be Toyota or VW.

lmedinas··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
yeah that would be a good a idea i think the logical reason i can find for them to not do it was that Pocket was an independent business where probably Mozilla does not even own completely. Also by keeping them independent makes it easier to sell in the future.
lmedinas··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
i also have no issues with it, if it was Google on the other hand i would probably disable it.
lmedinas··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
very sorry to these people who were laid off today, specially in this difficult situation where our world is.

I hope they could find another job soon.

lmedinas··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
Well i think Mozilla made very clear in the past that they did all they can to avoid Pocket to be evasive, and they made it to respect your privacy, in case you choose to use it. Of course you can always turn it off on your Firefox and never come across it again.
lmedinas··on 1Password for Linux development preview
Same issue for me, having online vaults was the killer for me. Also the subscription made me really think if the service was worth it after all, specially after buying the apps they are asking me more money. I moved to Keepass (and opensource apps) and im fairly happy with it.

I dont think i will go back to 1Password.

lmedinas··on Show HN: A WebGL Tribute to Tron, the movie that made me fall in love with CGI
Pretty cool! You got some other impressive projects in your website. Congrats!

It's impressive the type of 3D graphics that can be done in a modern browser, i'm surprised why we don't see more websites using these technologies.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: I have 25k users. Now what?
Nice one! congrats! How did you developed your app ? since when its in the AppStore ?
lmedinas··on Ask HN: What to do with a old MacBook Pro?
I have an old mid 2012 27" iMac in a similar situation except that it's extremely slow and almost unusable. I'm thinking about keeping it until its supported by end of this year and then move to Linux.

Too bad such an expensive computer at the time its barely unusable specially on XCode.

lmedinas··on Bosch develops rapid test for Covid-19
"(...)the rapid test can detect a SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection in patients in under two and a half hours" (...)With the tests currently in use, patients must usually wait one to two days for a result."

Well i see here a big improvement...

lmedinas··on Vitamin D supplementation to prevent acute respiratory tract infections (2017)
I suffer from similar issues with allergic asthma, which type of allergy and in which time of the year do you suffer more ?
lmedinas··on Google is finally killing off Chrome apps, which nobody really used
besides Chrome Remote Desktop i cannot think about any other useful Chrome app.
lmedinas··on macOS Catalina
I'm also sad they removed such as nostalgic feature but since years Apple is trying to remove it or at least make it less prominent. I guess its just a sign of times and how usability and trends change over the years. :(
