You might want to check out Quarto [1], which i recently discovered on here

lmc··on Who owns the copyright to my medical images? (2018)

lmc··on Reddit is being funded by a fake company?
Nice story, but BS.

"Reddit’s latest Series F of $410 million dollars was funded by two lead investors. Fidelity Management and Research and Khaira Capital."

The only source I could find that company is involved is crunchbase, which anyone can edit.

lmc··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
This may be in the middle of an A/B test - I still get pestered every time when in incognito mode.
lmc··on Pryrite: Interactively execute shell code blocks in a Markdown file
TIL of Quarto... nice!

I think Pryrite also has value - the terminal integration could be super useful for some tasks (especially for those of us that don't know emacs or its org mode)

lmc··on Pryrite: Interactively execute shell code blocks in a Markdown file
Oh, this will be great for interactive environment setup. Getting started with some of our current projects is like summoning Cthulhu and I could see us using this to set up a guided process for it.

I can see the resemblance to Notebooks/RMarkdown, but integrating it into a terminal session is a neat idea. I've not had chance to try it (I'm on Windows) but it seems really cool.

lmc··on What happens if Twitter gets encrypted DMs?
I've flagged this - it's some combination of ad and FUD.
lmc··on Ask HN: WFH – will I be outsourced?
Outsourcing is a gamble - the effects of cultural and language differences have often been underestimated. For every company that wants to try it, there will be some some that have tried it and been stung, and want to hire local again. Think of it like any other business risk e.g. company being acquired, financial issues etc. - try and make sure your skillset is applicable to other potential future orgs
lmc··on No Fixed Address Bank Account
Thanks for sharing. Seriously.
lmc··on No Fixed Address Bank Account
Out of interest, where did you go, and what were your reasons for stopping?

I think I can relate to a lot of what you say. I'm not saying I'm doing things the right way, but I've met people that you're describing that are basically on a very long holiday.

It's a proper cliche, but travel has definitely broadened my horizons. I hope you don't discourage it too much - emphasize travelling with purpose, and when to stop.

lmc··on No Fixed Address Bank Account
I think this is a really interesting discussion. I'm a bit of a nomad myself and cautious of the things you bring up - if everyone behaved like this, there'd be no community development and things would decay. But, you already see this in more common situations, like the movement of young people to cities, e.g.:

lmc··on How Crossrail was affected by the curvature of the Earth (2018)
I was thinking about mentioning that... yes! Construction on this project began 13 years ago so it needs to be taken into consideration. A similar project in Australia would've seen a drift of up to several metres in this time [0]. Europe has another angular CRS for this reason [1].

> the extra computation to do everything in WGS-84 space is insignificant

There is still significant overhead involved in conversion - arbitrary trig functions, even optimised, are still really expensive compared to planar geometry. Remember these folks will be working at super high resolutions too.

lmc··on How Crossrail was affected by the curvature of the Earth (2018)
WGS-84 has angular coordinates, you can't measure distances like they need for construction without projecting to Cartesian coords, hence the local CRS they developed.

> I remember I recently saw a lecture by an industry professional who took a Python algorithm and improved it 100 000x, in parts. That is, in stages he explained how to utilize the hardware on that particular machine, to improve the algorithm so much that it was hard to believe. Anyone have a link?

I suspect it's this one:

lmc··on OpenAlex: The Promising Alternative to Microsoft Academic Graph
Anyone know of any nice front-ends or visualizations for this?

I guess a Python or R Notebook and network analysis libraries would be a good place to start?

lmc··on Using TODO For Everything
My system has become:

TODO (never make it into `main`)

SHOULDDO (may have been TODOs in a previous life)

COULDDO (effectively pre-emptive strikes for code review)

I don't know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing.

lmc··on Ask HN: Moving consulting work and SaaS income from sole trader to UK Ltd?
Perhaps. Best to talk to an accountant. fwiw mine are about 70 quid a month, they're generally good but have f'd up in the past so i can't really recommend them. Hence my advice to try and keep things as simple as possible for them.
lmc··on Ask HN: Moving consulting work and SaaS income from sole trader to UK Ltd?
If your SaaS is not directly related to your consultancy work, you prob want to keep it separate. That way if any shit hits the fan you've got 1 income stream less at risk.

Plus it makes accounting simpler

lmc··on Actual is going open-source
Employer social security contributions is a big one. In the USA it's around 5-10% of a worker's salary. In Spain it's around 40%.

The gross salary a worker sees is after these, so not representative of what it actually costs to hire them.

lmc··on GitHub: Private Profiles beta
S'alright. More granular controls would be nice.
lmc··on Are you the asshole? – AI powered answer bot
I get a lot of what you are saying, and have similar feelings sometimes. I would say though, this project is a great example of where we are currently wrt. COTS-ish ML.

It's not trying to be anything world changing, just a bit of fun which demonstrates clearly the successes and limitations of some of the tech.

Also worth considering that whilst you are studying this, there are many practitioners on here that have will have gone through similar journeys.

lmc··on Are you the asshole? – AI powered answer bot
Me: "I was locked out of my house for a week. I had a pet $animal inside, and it died. I could've broken a window to get in, but didn't. Am I an asshole?"

----------

$animal = "hamster"...

u/ExcusesRUs_BOT: "NTA. Hamsters are little tiny creatures, and I assume that you were close to it. Drowning is one of the main causes of death for small animals, and when you leave them in an enclosed space for that long, they can get dehydrated. I'm sorry about your pet."

u/SanAndreasYourFault_BOT: "YTA for not looking for a solution before you started the drama. Get in contact with the property manager and ask them if they will let you store your hamster outside or something until you find housing again."

u/SplitTheBaby_BOTToss-up: "NTA but you're gonna wanna post this on r/adviceanimals too because if you were a good person you would've posted this on r/poirot"

----------

$animal = "goldfish"...

u/ExcusesRUS_BOT: "NTA - you have a right to mourn the loss of your pet. Some people would've broken a window to get inside."

u/SanAndreasYourFault_BOT: "YTA Since you didn't break a window to get in, are you still considerate of the dead fish?"

u/Split TheBaby_BOT: "NTA you had the fish for like a day and a half. It's not like it was a long-term thing, you had it for like a week. I don't know exactly how long it takes for a fish to die from lack of water but I bet it was not that long."

----------

$animal = "dog"...

u/ExcusesRUs _BOT: "NTA. If you wanted to be in your house you had every right to. Also, I have dogs, I would've broken the window if I was you."

u/SanAndreasYourFault_BOT: "YTA. Do you not have a dog anymore?"

u/SplitTheBaby_BOT: "NTA. You should've broken a window, that's a dick move. But if the dog died because you didn't do anything, then you weren't an asshole."

----------

No animals were harmed in the making of this post :-)

lmc··on The absurd complexity of server-side rendering
How well does it work for complex projects/component libraries? React is a pain in the ass but there's at least some established patterns for large projects.
lmc··on The absurd complexity of server-side rendering
I was never really a fan of the original 'Colors' article but I think the analogy works really well for this client-side vs server-side stuff.

Red = client

Blue = server

Purple = either

I think I will use this if I ever have to teach it.
